ARCHIVED Exempt From Labeling
phakephur replied to phakephur's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes. This is a local dairy that bottles their products in those old style glass bottles that you take back to the store for deposit refund. So because the glass bottles are actually reused (not recycled as I mistyped earlier), there is some sort of exemption in play. But they have small platic bottles with chocolate milk, etc. in them which are recyclable... -
ARCHIVED Exempt From Labeling
phakephur posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm annoyed that a local dairy is exempt from labeling requirements because they put their products in glass bottles (calico_jo, you are probably familiar with Maple View Dairy). The ingredients are not listed on the web site. Nutritional brochures are supposed to be available at the store, but when I asked for one at Whole Foods it wasn't readily available... -
ARCHIVED Coping With Co-workers Attitude While Dining Out
phakephur replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
If they cite the lack of severe immediate effect to encourage you to eat something you shouldn't, you can compare eating gluten to smoking. Sarah -
I've never worked as a buyer for a restaurant, so I don't know if this is an issue, but given what's available in the meat departments of grocery stores I think it's a legitimate question for those of you who feel comfortable ordering "plain meat". Do you verify that the meat in question is actually plain meat and not a bastardized slab enhanced with up...

Hi ladies, thanks for the replies. I live alone so I don't have the issues with contamination at home since I put the pets on a gluten-free diet. After 11 years of GI hell, I guard my health jealously. But it's not like I don't ever go anywhere or do anything, I just don't go to restaurants. I'm not willing to do the things required to eat in a restaurant...

I basically stopped eating out when I cut the gluten out of my diet. I haven't been in a restaurant in about 2 and a half years. Frankly, having celiac embarrasses me. A lot. I don't want to hold up the ordering process by talking to multiple people, I don't want to disclose personal medical information to strangers, and I am not lugging my own butter...

I think it's likely that if this pill becomes available, most doctors (at least in the United States) will summarily prescribe the drug for their newly diagnosed celiac patients without discussing the gluten free diet as a viable option. After all, isn't it the birthright of every American to shove anything indiscriminately down his piehole and take a pill...

Well said, celiac3270. That's exactly what I was getting at. Sarah

I'm ambivalent about the prospect of such a pill hitting the market. At present, celiacs who take their condition seriously accept the zero tolerance policy regarding gluten in their diet and thus present a united front to food manufacturers. I believe that the introduction of a drug to mitigate or eliminate symptoms of the disease will spit the celiac...

Did any of you hear the This American Life broadcast mentioned in the article? Toward the end Sarah Vowell describes the upbeat endings to some of the articles in Living Without. Like the story about a "gluten allergic" boy whose family goes out for pizza once a week until the child is diagnosed. "They thought pizza night was history until the mother...

This kind of thing ticks me off. It misrepresents the practical reality of eating gluten free and makes those who adhere to the zero tolerance rule seem like picky paranoid crackpots. If it was as simple as peeling the skin off fried chicken or flicking the croutons off the salad, then half the sections in this forum would be unnecessary. Sarah

As maryseas points out, it could be an infection or some systemic problem unrelated to celiac disease. At the last office job I had I could barely keep my eyes open. I had to slump down in my high backed chair with my hand on the mouse to catch a nap and hope nobody noticed. I thought it was the adjustment to the new job which was more demanding than my...

I've had bad dreams on a regular basis all my life. Generally it's things like being shot at, natural disasters, my pets being horribly injured. Since going gluten free, I have dreamed repeatedly about being far away from home and there's nothing to eat. Often I am in a crowded place and there are large buffets of food, but it's ALL bread, breaded/fried...

ARCHIVED Cold Season
phakephur replied to darlindeb25's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Deb, I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Next time your coworkers start bringing their crud to the office, you might try Airborne. It's a formulation of herbs and vitamins, etc. that's reputed to stave off colds and flu. I have found it at CVS in the cold/flu rememdy section on the bottom shelf. I didn't see anything on the ingredient list that looked... -
ARCHIVED Make-up
phakephur replied to KayJay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I recently started using bare essentials mineral makeup. The commercials are totally cheesy, I know, but I got some as a gift for my birthday and I love it. They claim it has natural sunscreen in it, but I generally avoid the sun so I haven't put that to the test. I had DH on my face before going gluten-free and I've never had a reaction to this makeup... -
ARCHIVED The Silver Lining To Celiac Disease
phakephur replied to Tricia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Agreed. It grosses me out now to hear somebody talk about eating and say "I'll just grab something". It used to bother me when I would go to the grocery store and see people throwing things indiscriminately in their carts because I couldn't do that any more. But when I really began to look at those people, I realized most of them look terrible. They look... -
I've read many posts on this forum that indicate you can successfully eat in a restaurant without getting sick, although I personally have not eaten out since I went gluten free over 2 years ago. I don't trust it. These restaurant cards basically say no wheat, rye, barley, oats. But we all know there's more to mindful of when preparieng a gluten free meal...

ARCHIVED New Endoscopy
phakephur replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi folks, Nita's post is troubling to me. A lot of celiac related literature recommends annual blood test to check for compliance to the gluten free diet. If you can have a negative blood test and still have intestinal damage, what is the point of the annual screening? Is Nita's situation so unusual that I shouldn't worry about that? Nita - I'm glad... -
ARCHIVED Vodka
phakephur replied to eternity's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you are going to stay away from vodkas made from grains (according to some sources are ok for celiacs), I recommend Luksasowa which is made from potatoes. It's smooth and makes a great martini. Chopin and Zodiac are also potato vodkas. cheers Sarah -
ARCHIVED Oats In Gf Diet
phakephur replied to lbsteenwyk's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Laurie, Try kasha (buckwheat). It's generally available in the kosher section of the grocery store. You can cook it to the same consistency as oatmeal. I make my own soap which I also use for shampoo. I've noticed since using homemade soap, I don't need lotion for my skin or conditioner for my hair. Natural soaps consisting of saponified oils... -
ARCHIVED Support Group In Nc?
phakephur replied to Ashley462's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Melissa - I'm in Durham also. As far as I know, the Triangle group is fairly inactive and has only met once or twice in the past year. I can give you the email address I used to get on the mailing list, although you probably already have that. Sarah
