ARCHIVED Building A Gluten Tolerance
phakephur replied to Lawrence's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm wondering how we know this. What studies prove it? I've posted this question several times before and never gotten the answer. Please note that I am not disputing that celiac is a lifelong disease, just wondering about research that steered the medical community away from the belief that gluten tolerance could be regained. -
ARCHIVED Dating And Celiac
phakephur replied to hermitgirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The estimated rate is 1 in 133, but only a fraction of them are diagnosed. -
ARCHIVED Does One Ever "get Over" The Disease?
phakephur replied to bob79's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here is an article about a woman who apparently went into remission after 10 years on gluten-free diet. I haven't seen any followup to this. Given that it used to be thought that children outgrew celiac disease, I'd like to know what research was done to show that it is a lifelong disease and when was it done. 1970s? 80s? Sarah -
ARCHIVED Potential Cure Getting Closer?
phakephur replied to Ryan T's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Researchers seem to think that a celiac's fondest wish is to be able to eat gluten again. That's true for some of us, but I think a lot of us would just like to eat gluten free more easily, conveniently, cheaply. Right now the variety and availability of gluten free foods is increasing in grocery stores and restaurants. I wonder if that trend will reverse... -
ARCHIVED Still Drinking Regular Beer - No Problems
phakephur replied to Mountaineer Josh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Josh, Bottom line is, on this forum, if you admit to biting off the corner of a saltine cracker you'll get the cancer lecture. If you accidentally get glutened at a restaurant, you'll get lots and lots of {{{{{HUGS}}}}} -
ARCHIVED Chemical Sensitivities?
phakephur replied to holiday16's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yeah, the fragrance addicts who can't pry themselves away from the curtains or the couch or whatever has been sprayed. I call them "the huffers." -
ARCHIVED Chemical Sensitivities?
phakephur replied to holiday16's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I call this "the stench of the well-groomed" I call this "the vapor trail" One thing I really hate is how Sunday night is laundry night in my neighborhood, and all the dryers are venting dryer sheet stench simultaneously. The entire neighborhood is under a miasma of "mountain breeze" and I can't go walking without getting a headache and sore... -
ARCHIVED Alvine Pharmaceuticals Obtains Patents For Celiac Disease Therapies
phakephur replied to patriceo15's topic in Publications & Publicity
What will be the effect of this pill on the burgeoning gluten free food market? I am concerned that the development of a pharmaceutical therapy for celiac disease will result in the availability of fewer rather than more gluten free options. -
ARCHIVED Family Sues Mcdonald's Over Undisclosed Ingredient
phakephur replied to Respira's topic in Publications & Publicity
I love how these parents are so concerned about their children's diet/health and then they take them to McDonald's. -
ARCHIVED Restaurant Frustration
phakephur replied to horsegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't understand the sense of entitlement about eating in restaurants. It's a place of business, not a public park. If you think it's unfair to be barred from bringing your own food in, is the "No shirt, no shoes, no service" policy out of line? I also don't understand why anyone would threaten restaurant personnel with legal action or projectile vomiting... -
Has anyone seen a followup to this article on celiac.com in Feb 2006 about the woman who went back to normal diet after 10 years gluten free? The abstract has results for 15-month followup, but I wonder what the longer term health results have been. Sarah

Article on cnn.com entitled Open Original Shared Link specifically mentions gluten sensitivity as culprit in digestive symptoms.

ARCHIVED You're Telling Me This Because.....
phakephur replied to phakephur's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For the most part I do. I was one of those people who had a lot of anger about the disease and I've made a lot of progress with my rage issues. I'm to the point now where I don't even really listen when people start telling about all their restaurant experiences or the dessert they had. I just roll my inner eye and think "all eating out, all the time.... -
So my best friend calls me this morning and the first thing she says is "I've never cared for oatmeal. But I picked up a loaf of oatmeal bread and I don't think I've ever had anything as good." Well, I'm happy for you. But why don't you share that with someone who can delight with you in the joys of soft, delicious, store-bought bread? You can gorge...

ARCHIVED G;uten In Swimming Pools , Playgrounds, The Ocean?
phakephur replied to abigail's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you worry about the ocean, then you can worry about municipal water supply as well. I think either is too paranoid. Don't make yourself crazy. -
ARCHIVED Zelnorm (ibs Drug) Pulled Off The Market For Deaths
phakephur replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Publications & Publicity
I thought this part was interesting. I'm sure these patients don't try gluten-free diet before their doctors pronounce their condition unresponsive to any other treatment. -
There is an Open Original Shared Link about gluten free diet. No new information. The link may not work if you don't have an account.

ARCHIVED Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act
phakephur posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Brief Open Original Shared Link in New Scientist about Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act -
ARCHIVED Classical Music Fans
phakephur replied to aikiducky's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That's really great. Are they friends of yours? I have tickets to see Alfred Brendel play with the NC Symphony in 3 weeks and I'm pretty stoked about it. Sarah -
angelbender, you seem pretty new, so you might not have seen Open Original Shared Link I've had a lot of anxiety about the dating scene, too. I just started a new relationship about 6 weeks ago and the gluten thing hasn't been much of a problem. This guy is a homebody like me so there's not a lot of pressure to go out. He doesn't cook and I do so that...

You had this rash before celiac diagnosis, right? Does this iodine allergy persist after starting the gluten free diet? I thought DH was the dermatological manifestation of celiac, sometimes exacerbated by iodine, but you don't get the rash if you are gluten free.

ARCHIVED Triangle Support?
phakephur replied to SouthernCeliacGirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There is, but I don't think it's very active. Here's a link Open Original Shared Link If you don't get a reply when you contact them, try this e-mail instead warli001@duke.edu Sarah -
ARCHIVED My Sister Foud Someone Who Claims. . .
phakephur replied to ptkds's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Those abstracts are interesting, but they are from recent studies. Was it only as recently as 2005 that doctors began advising us that celiac cannot be "outgrown" as some food allergies can? In any event it doesn't matter because it's just a trivia question. -
ARCHIVED My Sister Foud Someone Who Claims. . .
phakephur replied to ptkds's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
All - To be clear, I don't dispute the veracity of the statement "celiac can't be cured", I'd just like to know where that information came from, particularly since it used to be thought that the opposite was the case, and also because it is stated so frequently on this board. That said, I do believe that "gluten free for life" is the best and safest... -
ARCHIVED My Sister Foud Someone Who Claims. . .
phakephur replied to ptkds's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It used to be thought that celiac was a childhood disease that would resolve spontaneously with age. Now the gospel is that once you have it, you have it for life. We see that over and over again on this board. I've been wondering for a while at what point this shift took place. Can someone point me to the research which shows that a person can never...
