  1. this is unrelated, but when I was in the library last night looking for a book on tape, I saw a title that made me laugh: A Fatal Glass of Beer
  2. Can someone point me to a link for the literature that shows the increased cancer risk of 40-100 times for celiacs who do not follow the diet? I'm wondering how that number can be assumed to be accurate given that the majority of celiacs go undiagnosed (and therefore do not follow the diet). Thanks in advance. Sarah
  3. Hi debmidge, This is something I've thought a lot about. PM me if you'd like to chat some about it. Sarah

    ARCHIVED Grrrr....

Generally when somebody tries to rub my nose in the diet by telling me they could never give up a certain food, I'll say something like "You never know what you can do until you have to. But if what you say is true, I feel bad for you because if you ever have a health challenge that requires some self discipline on your part, you're screwed."

    ARCHIVED Fried Foods

Yet there is a tendency among celiacs to cite absence of symptoms as evidence that a food is gluten free. So if Tracykobegf had not inquired about the frier, he/she might have reported an eating out success story in a format with which we are all familiar, "I eat the fries at such-and-such and have never had any problem."
  6. Thanks, Kaiti! I was too lazy to call them since I generally don't eat stuff like that.
  7. Zatarain's is on a list that surfaces on this forum periodically of companies that don't hide allergens in their ingredient list. So out of curiosity today when I was in the grocery store I picked up a box of Zatarain's rice (I don't remember which flavor) and saw that the ingredient list contained "soy sauce" without listing the constituent ingredients...
  8. maybe it's the potable equivalent of "not inhaling"
  9. Thanks Nisla. I forgot they had done that in the Raleigh store when I was looking for bread in Chapel Hill. I guess it's a company wide thing. Now I'll have to nuke my brownies in that filthy microwave when I stop in there for coffe, not to mention that it was a lot easier to scope out single celiac men when the g.f. rack was out in the open
  10. I would rather have a shirt that says "the ubiquity of wheat sucks!"
  11. My mother got the blood tests (at my insistence) during her last physical but never got the results; the doc's office didn't call her and she never followed up. She's always regarded celiac as "my thing", something that will never affect her. Here we are a few months later and she's starting to have persistent diarrhea and a rash on both elbows. Although...
  12. Maybe that's "Why French Women Don't Get Fat"
  13. Stef, Your insensitive friends have inadvertently put their finger on the rub. Wheat and its derivatives generally don't belong in salad dressings or potato salad or ice cream or a myriad other things, but there it is. It's not giving up Bunny Bread that makes the diet so tough, it's having to dodge all the bastardized foodstuffs. I can't wait until next...
  14. blueshift, What are the claims about bone marrow gel? You might be able to get the extract using a slow cooker so you aren't tethered to the house while your bones boil. Sarah
  15. I would assume the absence of a warning label would indicate lack of awareness of the gluten free lifestyle, not necessarily the lack of cross contamination.
  16. That's good to know. Thanks a lot, Richard. Sarah
  17. This may not be the right thread to add this, but Keith Olbermann mentioned celiac on his show last night. The stick puppets from Michael Jackson Puppet Theater are being auctioned on e-bay and 100% of the proceeds go to the celiac sprue association. I kind of wish Keith hadn't said he has a "mild case of it". I'm sure he was being sarcastic but people...
  18. Richard, Is that something that applies specifically to the plumping solutions used for meat? I thought "flavoring" or "natural flavors" were suspect until the allergen labeling law goes into effect. Sarah
  19. Health Valley rice bran crackers taste similar to graham crackers. They are available in the US at Kroger in the natural food section. The label does say "gluten free ingredients" rather than claiming to be totally gluten free. Some people aren't comfortable buying products labeled as such. I've never had symptoms after eating them. Sarah
  20. dperk - Maybe it is something in the barn. I don't live on a farm, but I have 2 horses that I board near my house. Sometimes after I've been to visit them I have itchy blisters on my face in the same place where I used to have full blown DH before going gluten free. It doesn't happen every time. Usually I get an outbreak when I've spent more time in the...
  21. I'm bumping this question back to the top because I'm really curious about this. Mel, your post about the catering hall reminded me that nobody had replied yet. Sarah
  22. Hi Mel, I totally gave up eating out 2 and a half years ago. I ate out a couple times after diagnosed and didn't get sick, but after reading about all the possible sources of contamination, it just seemed too likely to me that I would get dosed in a restaurant. I regard my good experiences eating out as the product of luck rather than skill in ordering...
  23. How do you know what things on the buffet are safe? Boiled eggs in the shell or unsliced fruit would be obvious to me, but what other things can you safely get without asking the same questions you would when you order an entree? Sarah
  24. Check out Tamarind Tree prepackaged Indian meals. They don't require refrigeration. I have found these in 2 chain grocery stores. (I'm in southeast US). These meals include precooked rice which you need to rehydrate and a nice dish to put on top, so if you have access to a microwave it would be easy to heat. I recently took one of these on a day long...
  25. Hi Wendy, Don't those George Foreman grills have teflon or other non-stick coating? If that's the case and it was used previously to cook gluten containing foods, there could be contamination in the non-stick surface. Just a thought since it looks like you are being diligent with ingredients. You're on the road to wellness. Hang in there. Sarah
