ARCHIVED Marriage Trouble And Celiac
Merika replied to Merika's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you everyone for your thoughtful replies!! As for being gluten-free, I'm pretty sure I'm 100% gluten-free. The last time I got glutened maybe 6 mos ago at a house under construction where they were installing drywall and mixing/sanding joint compound. It wasn't too bad a reaction, but I learned about ingredients in construction material. I... -
Hi Marty, Welcome I've been vegetarian for about 14 yrs (with egg & dairy). My diagnosis came 18 mos ago. This past winter I did the allergy test. Tested positive for just about everything I eat except tomatoes. Positive for soy, beans, eggs, dairy.... Tested negative to every meat on the planet. The past few months, I've been trying to add...

ARCHIVED Vegan (soy Free) Mac & Cheese
Merika replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi, No ideas exactly. My ds also loves pesto pasta, which you could make at home without the cheese. Nutritious, tasty, and a similar texture. Merika -
ARCHIVED I've So Had It With Doctors!
Merika replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can also order direct the complete blood panel from promethius labs in san diego and have any doctor run it. Your insurance may or may not cover it, and for that matter you may or may not want it on your insurance if it comes back positive. Dh did this for himself - cost $250 or 299 and my midwife did the blood draw (you need lab equipment and the... -
ARCHIVED Marriage Trouble And Celiac
Merika posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right spot to put this question, as I am the one with celiac, not dh, but since it involves him and family, I thought maybe to post it here. Dh is angry a lot. Angry that I'm sick (still, 18 mos after diagnosis). Angry that I don't go places with him (cause I'm sick). Angry that he doesn't go places (because he won't... -
As posted, stick with major brands that you can verify as gluten-free. I stay away from all Indian spices, and other spices not from the US. Sad, because i really like them and they're much cheaper, but also more likely to cut their spices with wheat - it both prevents "caking" and adds bulk. Watch out also for packaged medicinal chinese herbs in powder...

ARCHIVED Adventures In Gluten/dairy/egg-free Cooking
Merika replied to Emme999's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi, Oops sorry Bean, didn't see that you were supposed to double it. That is a lot! Kasey's mom - here are my soy-free chocolate sources: whole foods brand dark chocolate bar (red/white wrapper) and scharfenberger unsweetened cocoa (makes really good hot chocolate with almond milk). There are online sources of soy-free chocolate chips - I haven't tried... -
ARCHIVED Accidental Gluten In Diet
Merika replied to mandigirl1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey Mandigirl, Sorry about your troubles with the corn pops. If it's encouraging at all, I think you might find childbirth less troublesome and possibly shorter Merika -
ARCHIVED Adventures In Gluten/dairy/egg-free Cooking
Merika replied to Emme999's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A warning about flax if you do not currently consume it - it is also used as a laxative, so start eating it in small amounts, and slowly build your way up. Kasey's mom - Pamela's Brownie Mix has soy in it Sorry. I've made this same mistake too and darnit, they are delicious Merika -
Food rotation is an excellent idea My mom does this on a 7 day rotation and says it really helps. There is a book that has a good menu plan in the back (the bulk of the book is somewhat useless testimonials, etc), but it's on a 4 day rotation. I think 5-7 days is more effective. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the book! ! It's for kids with allergies...

ARCHIVED Hair Dye
Merika replied to anniej55's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Ann, I stay away from gluten in all products I use at home - shampoo, etc. When I got it colored i didn't worry too much, as they washed it all out. I think I might check their shampoo/conditioner - but probably wouldn't stop them from using it if it had gluten (cause it all gets washed out presumably). I WOULD insist on checking products used that... -
ARCHIVED Canning
Merika replied to inmyhead's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mmmmmm... fresh peaches Good to know about Certo. What sort of store sells it? Immyhead, I have gotten that same response from other companies. It's really just a legal liability weasel on their part. Just use your own judgement about whether you want to eat the product or not based on the ingredients and preparation of them. I find I get this answer... -
ARCHIVED Adventures In Gluten/dairy/egg-free Cooking
Merika replied to Emme999's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi Bean, You may want to bring a calculator into the kitchen with you. Substitutions are tricky sometimes. If the recipe called for 3 eggs, you should have added 4 1/2 teaspoons powder egg replacer, and 6 tablespoons water. My water math is different than yours because my box of ener-g egg replacer calls for a ratio of 1 1/2 tsp to 2 tbls... -

ARCHIVED To Test Or Not To Test?
Merika replied to Gosiasamosia708's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh, ryebaby0, that is awful! I'm glad things are better for you now. I guess for other parents to remember is that many of us were diagnosed as adults and didn't seem to have any problems as kids (well, some problems with hindsight, as you mention....). BUT We all would have been better off diagnosed as nearly asymptomatic and put on a gluten-free diet... -
Maybe if you touched everything in there and then ate your own food with glutened fingers? Or maybe if they were mixing flour at the time? Wait...was this an actual bakery? Not like a coffee shop? I suppose then every surface could be coated with a fine mist of flour....hahaha, do it again next week and see what happens! Merika (perverse sense...

ARCHIVED To Test Or Not To Test?
Merika replied to Gosiasamosia708's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
First, if she tests negative, no harm done. Second, if she tests postive and has celiac disease, then she WILL be as strong and healthy as you, provided you follow the gluten-free diet As for no one believing you, well, you're preaching to the choir hear, I think, lol. When I got super sick with celiac, I was 19. Docs listened to me, ran a bunch of... -
KaitaUSA, I love your posts But I have to say yours should come with a disclaimer at the bottom that you are 17? 18?, lol. 8 months to feel better!!! I wish that were my case. For anyone over the age of 25, I think it will take the body a lot longer to heal, just like it does from any other injury. Of course, factor in how long you've been what I call...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Psychological Effects
Merika replied to mandigirl1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, I go to www.savingdinner.com - an inexpensive subscription site - recommended by www.flylady.net . Saving Dinner sends weekly menus and grocery lists, and you have a choice of menu (reg, veggie, low-carb, frugal, etc.). They are easily convertible to gluten-free, and most are tasty. The nice thing about it is you don't have to think or plan much... -
ARCHIVED The Dreaded "travel With Catered Food"
Merika replied to tarnalberry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, well, I've just ordered a dehydrater Wheeeeee! If you move up near Hollywood, give me a holler Merika -
Hi Meg, It may be that after being gluten-free for a while, you'll start to notice reactions to things you're allergic to, that while your body was in the throws of gluten-reaction, you just couldn't sense. Does that make sense? I also tested positive for all the allergens you mention I still eat dairy and rice, though, because I tested less positive...

ARCHIVED Danimals Dinkable Yogurt Gluten Testing
Merika replied to lisabp's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oops, sorry, you are right Stephanie! I am not eating ANY vinegars right now, and I guess I've forgotten what's in which one now (doh!). Brown cow yogurt has a good paragraph on their faqs page about this issue too. The link escapes me right now, it can be googled. Merika -
Hi, I've been vegetarian for 13 years, and am now trying to eat meat I don't recommend going 100% veggie. A little meat once a month or whenever you feel like it is a good idea. After being veggie for so long, my body no longer makes the enzyme necessary to break down meat, so it is very difficult (and unpleasant) trying to add meat back into my diet...

Hi Kimmie, Yeah, this is really annoying and you should talk with them. But nicely, yk? The other (remote) possibility is that the chicken they get has been pumped with a "plumper" at the factory and the plumper contained wheat. I hear this is an increasing problem at grocery stores. Merika

Hi Bean, that sucks! In my oceans of experience with celiac (ha, not!) in the last 18 mos, I have come to the conclusion that I will not eat anything I cannot read the label(s) on. And I generally won't eat anything at anyone else's house they've prepared, even if the labels say gluten-free because of the cross-contamination issue, unless my mom made...
