  1. ok, I'll chime in as the oddball here.... we started gluten-free life with tinkyada pastas, thought they were great yadda yadda, but eventually I came to avoid them and all pasta with added rice BRAN. It seems harder to digest that way. So I've been getting Rizopia brand rice pasta which is just rice. I like it better too. Merika
  2. Hi Melanie, I've heard similar statistics - 1 in 10 immediate family, 1 in 133 north american population. Breastfeeding has been shown to lessen odds of celiac. :) The important thing, you know, is to have fun trying ;-) LOL Merika
  3. Claire, Is the lab a home-test kit, or one your doctor must send in? Merika
  4. Who's going to look up a letter in a file if a patient ends up on the emergency table??? i think the medic-alert bracelet/necklace is what you want. If your list is too long to fit, you can list the most important and then add a special call-in number for a medicalert center that will list all your stuff. Personally, I wouldn't worry about intolerances...
  5. Rachel, The whole dates at WF should be ok. Not necessarily true with other non-California typed eww-gross dates. (sorry, don't know how else to describe them!) Tiffany, I've also found oat flour on dried fig pieces. Again, haven't run across it in whole figs, but do on the pieces. And I had to call and talk to a guy in a factory about that one...
  6. You know, a year ago I had an allergy panel run by them and instead of the promised 2 weeks for results it took 3 MONTHS and more than a few phone calls from me, and then absolutely ZERO phone support afterwards, which they promise a year of result-interpretation help afterwards. I also tried to run a celiac test (the older version) for my son, TWICE, and...
  7. Hi, I don't get the skin stuff. I do get stomach problems, nausea, anxiety and fatigue. And the symtpoms follow a predictable pattern day by day after the event, like you said. Sorry you've been glutened/soyed. That sucks. I've been gluten-free for 2 years, and done really really mess-up free for the last 1 1/2 yrs, until we had a little get-together...
  8. The one I have says "Organic Trail Mix". The number below is 126641. The ingredients listed are: raisins, sunflower seeds, date pieces, roasted peanuts, dried apricots, raw pumpkin seeds, raw almonds, dried apples, walnuts. I have left off the word "organic" which precedes nearly every ingredient. The date pieces are dusted in flour. This is actually somewhat...
  9. Hi cleveland bob, I don't see a doc for celiac stuff. I was diagnosed 2 years ago. I do see a doc if I need to about other stuff. I've heard that a one-year blood test check for antibodies can be useful, to see if you've really eliminated all the gluten you think you have. Also, it lets the doc know if you're complying with the diet. I know I'm complying...
  10. Hi, My local Whole Foods has started carrying these delicious looking dried fruits and nuts by the produce aisle - packed in deli-type clear boxes with deli-type labels. It's packed by Whole Foods in Austin, Tx. Since they are so nearly impossible to contact, I thought I'd post my findings here. It took me NINE days to get this info, and I still have not...
  11. I like it but it makes me feel sort of bad, so I don't eat it anymore. When I did allergy tests one year post-gluten-free, I tested positive to every grain out there (except for wheat, rye, barley, oats, LOL - because I'd avoided them I suspect). I think if your insides are really messed up, any grain is hard to digest. In time, you may be ok eating them...
  12. Hi Berneses, I'm sorry if I offended you by my post. It was not my intent. I wasn't sure what your question was in the initial post and was just tossing things off my head that *I* would want to ask somebody. I am very skeptical of doctors, I'll say that right here upfront. It's not to say they don't have their place, but my own experience has been...
  13. Kaseysmom, thanks for the heads up on the weleda tooth gel - I'd just been thinking it was about time for ds to start using toothpaste, and since I use the adult weleda, this is perfect - don't know why I hadn't thought to look there. Jenvan, the WHOLE LINE of Ca baby is gluten-free?? Are the oils and other products with vit E gluten-free too? I've...
  14. There is a roaring debate among celiac researchers over whether oats are safe or not for celiacs. Generally, it is divided by continent - if you're in North America, the advice is don't eat oats. If you're in Europe, it's that oats are ok. McCann's Irish Oatmeal is the only oatmeal in the US that claims to be close to "gluten free" by "acceptable levels"...
  15. Promethius Labs in San Diego (they do mail order) is one of the best celiac labs in the country. Last year, the cost was about $290 for the full panel celiac blood test. Any doc can run it. Merika
  16. Why do you need a gi guy to follow up with? If your primary care guy performed a test that showed you were positive celiac (and IMO there's no such thing as a "weak" positive, you're either above the cutoff number or below), what more is there? I mean, if you want to do a follow up blood test to make sure the antibodies have gone down and verify that you...
  17. Thank you Smunkee for that post! Love the letter. Merika
  18. There is also a gluten-free playdough you can order online from www.discountschoolsupply.com . Merika PS. Throw out all the old playdough toys or clean them ridiculously, insanely clean or you are risking contamination.
  19. I'm guessing your friend was diagnosed as a small child and has never known (or remembered) being really sick with long-term damage. If glutened, he or anyone will feel like cr&p for a few weeks and then feel better. This has nothing to do with actual intestinal damage. He is simply uninformed. Merika
  20. Thanks Tiffany! He seems a bit better today. Now I am paranoid after reading more on this board that at the end of his gluten-free month, he'll go back on gluten, get really really sick, and then blame me (knock wood) Let's hope it goes some other way.... Merika
  21. Hi again Periodic testing of your 6 yr old may be a good idea. Some people like to run the gene test, and then if she doesn't carry the known gene, you could theoretically not test her anymore. Your dh may want to try the diet anyway. 12% of the US population is gluten intolerant, but only 1% has celiac. Given that the diet is helping your 2 yr...
  22. Hi Elfkin and welcome, From other posts I've read here, the speech delays could definitely be caused by celiac. Have you had his hearing checked as well? There are other parents here with kids with various developmental delays. Post a specific question for it, or search for it, to get the best responses. I don't personally have experience in that area...
  23. Ok, nevermind, lol, I finally had time to read the rest of this section, and I guess you are all addressing this same question from a few days ago. Sorry!
  24. Hi, So my dh has been sick since about 3 mos after I was diagnosed celiac and went gluten-free. That was almost 2 yrs ago. Since then he has got belly bloat, D, and other digestive trouble. He was checked out by a gi guy who ran a bunch of tests and proclaimed IBS. Then he saw an acupuncturist/herbalist, who's normally very good, but he didn't improve...
  25. I take it all back, what I said before!!! Upon closer inspection, my order was only half complete. One item was listed as included, but was in fact missing. The other items were just absent. This is my first order from them and what can I say, i was not impressed. I called today, to find 2 items were backordered but she could send them this week...
