Rain, rain and more rain here today. It stopped for a short while mid-afternoon. Rain is expected to end by Thursday. -
ARCHIVED For Those Of Us In The Early Stages Of Healing
psawyer replied to sickchick's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
While the villi are healing, it is best to start with simple foods and avoid lactose. This will be easier to digest. I have never seen anything to say that "dense" food will injure the villi due to being dense. Can you share your source for this? Obviously gluten will cause damage, but we're talking about gluten-free foods here. -
ARCHIVED New Here...hopefully Someone Can Help
psawyer replied to closure's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! Not direct to the symptoms, but on this board all approved topics are pinned once a moderator has reviewed them (as I have just done to this one), and decided that they are appropriate to the board and are in the right section. -
ARCHIVED Trouble Uploading Personal Photo
psawyer replied to Laurad-'s topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
The most likely cause is that the file is too large. The board will automatically scale the image size for both personal photos and avatars to the maximum of 150 pixels in the larger dimension, but there is a limit on the size in bytes you can upload. For an avatar it is 50Kb and for a personal photo 100Kb. If you have an image larger than the limit, you... -
ARCHIVED Do I *really* Have To Get A New Toaster?
psawyer replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Check your plastic utensils, Tupperware, and and non-stick cookware. If they are in good condition, without any scratches, then a good, thorough washing should be fine. Your mixer should be fine if you scrub the working parts. Colanders and wooden utensils are porous and, like scratched items, can have deeply embedded gluten that cannot be washed off... -
For us, it certainly is not a choice. But there are some people who have chosen it without being forced to, and for those people, it is a lifestyle choice. It is most unfortunate for those of us who have no choice when the issue becomes blurred. But, as we have said here many times and to many people, you don't need a diagnosis of celiac to decide to...

ARCHIVED Cecelia's Gluten Free Shopping Guide Is Garbage!
psawyer replied to souzahanson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
MSG is a source of concern to many people, and many people react to it. But is is NOT a source of gluten. Other than having the first four letters in common, there is no relationship between gluten and glutamate. Glutamic acid (the salts of which are called glutamate) is an amino acid found embedded in most proteins. Hydrolyzed proteins have been partially... -
High temperature alone will not do anything to remove gluten. Thorough washing is required. If you have a gas grill, then washing the grids should be enough. If you use charcoal, be aware that most briquettes are bound together with wheat flour, and gluten is released in the smoke. You must use pure charcoal, which is in the form of irregularly shaped...

Oh my gawd. I've already abashed myself due to my choice of colloquialisms to describe altering a digital photo. Among mainframe techies, to "massage" data means to manually manipulate it (as opposed to an existing automated process) to get it into the desired form. OMG, "manually manipulate" isn't any better when the topic is a picture of the... -

In all likelihood, yes. The forum software can automatically resize any photo to the max avatar size (150 pixels by 133 for landscape), but the maximum file size you can upload is 50Kb. The higher the resolution of the photo, the more bytes it takes. If it is a high resolution one, you would have to shrink it to no more than 50Kb before uploading. You... -

ARCHIVED Are The Following Gluten-free?
psawyer replied to 006's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
006, to answer your first question it was one year ago and showed no indications whatsoever of autoimmune celiac. I do react to small amounts, so that, coupled with no reactions, says that I am successfully staying gluten free. There are a number of companies/brands that have a policy that they will always disclose any gluten in any ingredient in a product... -

Indeed, sillies seem scarce today. While I'm keeping abreast of the discussion, I don't think I will be able to add any, um, support to a decision regarding a bra. -
I eat quinoa without any problems. It can be rather flat tasting if you don't add anything to it. If you are preparing the grain, I suggest using something other than just water for the liquid. Broth, wine, gluten-free soy sauce, vegetable juice or some other tasty fluid can replace some of the water with great results. It is possible that you have a problem...

ARCHIVED Are The Following Gluten-free?
psawyer replied to 006's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The thing is, in the US at least, "gluten free" has no legally defined definition. The FDA is required by FALCPA to develop one, but it isn't there yet. That definition, when it comes, will have a compliance test level which will not be zero, no matter how much we wish it could be. "Guarantee" does have an understood legal meaning. It means that you are... -

I'm not sure what you are seeing. When you go to one of the topic areas, the topics are normally displayed with the most recent post first. The time the topic was started does not matter; just the time of the most recent post. New topics will be at the bottom until a moderator views them and approves them by pinning them. We don't close topics here. Any topic...

Everybody will see their own warning level next to their name. If you have never been warned for violating the board rules, it will show 0% and there will be no saved notes. For any member who has been warned, the level will show as 33% for one warning, and 67% for two. The notes will indicate who issued the warning, when, and the reason. Moderators issue...
