ARCHIVED Tell Me What Glutened Me From This List:
psawyer replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No grain product can be listed as "spices" in an ingredient list in Canada or the United States. In both countries, wheat is a top allergen which can not be hidden. -

If it was wheat, it would have to say so. It is usually tapioca or corn. -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cats?
psawyer replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Our cats don't get supplements and are not fed raw meat. None of them are blind, so they must be getting sufficient taaurine from their food, none of which is raw. One of them eats only canned food, and everything in the can is cooked to at least some degree. -
I don't know of one that isn't gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cats?
psawyer replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Wet food can be left out in the dish for much more than 15 minutes. Several hours will see it drying out, but it is still safe to consume. If you want to use 15 minutes as a domination technique it may work. But there is not a problem with leaving canned food in a dish for a few hours. Leftovers in a can with an air-tight cover will keep for at least ... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cats?
psawyer replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have a few comments. Cats are indeed obligate carnivores. In this, they are different from dogs and humans. Dogs and humans (and many other creatures) are omnivores. They eat animals when available, but can survive on vegetable matter alone. Herbivores eat no meat at all, dining exclusively on vegetable matter. Obligate carnivore means the cat must... -
Your son was diagnosed 15 years ago, before the blood tests used today existed. Those tests measure antibody levels in the bloodstream. A person with celiac disease who is following a strict gluten-free diet will test as negative for celiac disease. A positive test indicates that there is still gluten in the diet. A high positive suggests that the source...

Finding gluten-free, corn-free bread that is good is hard. For some, this might offer an alternative to rice bread, which some have likened to cardboard. -
ARCHIVED Is MSG Safe?
psawyer replied to blissfully-unaware's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
MSG is gluten-free. Whether it is "safe" is a subject of much controversy, which I won't get into here. But it is definitely gluten-free. Be careful with Chinese food. Most soy sauce contains wheat and thus has gluten. -
ARCHIVED What Are "grits"?
psawyer replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Essentially, yes. The Southerners call it grits. I have had it while travelling in the South (without brown sugar or maple syrup ). It is gluten-free kind and of like what I remember Quaker Cream of Wheat to be. -
ARCHIVED List Of Companies That Always Disclose Ingredients
psawyer replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Actually, they do make sense. Read on. All of the single ingredient products contain only the single ingredient named. Who knew? The extracts are also stated to be gluten-free. So, when wheat is present, it will be disclosed. This is not news--it is required in Canada and the United States. They don't have a gluten-free list--good for them... -

ARCHIVED Can Someone Explain The Difference Between Sugars To Me?
psawyer replied to Noche22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sugars are simple carbohydrates that occur naturally and can be obtained from a variety of sources. The names end in ose. Common table sugar is sucrose. Other common sugars include glucose, dextrose, lactose, maltose, fructose. All are gluten-free. Some people, including some people with celiac disease, are intolerant to lactose and/or fructose. Lactose... -
ARCHIVED Coffee And Celiac
psawyer replied to Noche22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Plain coffee, instant or beans, including decaf, is inherently gluten-free. Flavor added to coffee might possibly introduce gluten. Coffee is hard on the stomach, and may cause trouble in the early stages of healing in celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED Tvp - Is It Safe?
psawyer replied to amy2011's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You doctor has out-of-date information. TVP is a place where it was once possible to hide gluten. It is now required, at least in Canada and the United States, that wheat be clearly disclosed as "wheat." So, it is no longer a concern. Textured soy protein is gluten-free, but is not safe for those avoiding soy. Soy, like wheat, must be clearly disclosed... -
ARCHIVED Progresso Soup
psawyer replied to celiacmom2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sadly, it is not unheard of for the wrong label to be on a can of food. It is rare, but mistakes can happen. I sell canned pet food, and there have been a couple of times where I have opened a case of cans and and found the labels to differ from the label on the outer case. Is the can mislabeled or the case? Unless you open one, you don't know. Minimum wage... -

ARCHIVED Shepard's Pie Seasonings
psawyer replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Some are and some are not. The Lea & Perrins brand sold in the United States (cream colored label with maroon lettering) is gluten-free, and says so on the label. The version of Lea & Perrins sold in Canada (orange label with brown lettering) has malt vinegar from barley as the first ingredient--not gluten-free. If you are close to the border you... -
We have had good results with the Gluten Free Pantry French Bread and Pizza mix. We do it up in our bread machine. I suppose it depends on just how light you are looking for. Wonder Bread it isn't. But it is a heck of a lot lighter than some of the bricks being passed off as gluten-free bread.
