ARCHIVED Is Washing A Non-Gluten Bowl Ok?
psawyer replied to zebaldwin's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A good washing will remove gluten from a bowl with an intact solid surface. Anything that has noticeable scratches or that is porous (wood) would be a potential issue. Plastic is fine if it is in good condition (not scratched). -
ARCHIVED In Desperate Need Of Some Positivity :/
psawyer replied to zebaldwin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Dextrin is usually not a source of gluten, but occasionally is. From the Canadian Celiac Association's pocket guide: DEXTRIN .. ? CHECK A slightly sweet polysaccharide obtained b y heating a starch in the presence of small amounts of moisture and an acid. Dextrin is not commonly used in foods. It is almost always derived from ant one of the following... -

I don't know if Tums are gluten-free, but if there is gluten it isn't the maltodextrin. Maltodextrin is gluten-free. -
Nightshades are a plant family that includes potato, tomato, eggplant, tobacco, sweet pepper, and other plants.

ARCHIVED Boston Pizza's New Gluten Free Menu Items
psawyer replied to Kemmanuel's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I have eaten at BP quite a few times, and have not had a problem. The menu clearly marks which toppings are gluten-free--most are, including several meats. From my local BP web site: Gluten Free Toppings Anchovies, Banana Peppers, Black Olives, Cheddar, Chicken, Feta, Genoa Salami, Green Onions, Green Peppers, Ham, Italian Sausage, Jalapeno Peppers... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Eating In Ontario?
psawyer replied to hockeymomofceliacchild's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Pizza Nova also have a gluten-free crust available. I have not tried it. The Pizza Pizza one is okay, but I much prefer the Boston Pizza one. Swiss Chalet is everywhere, and the rotisserie chicken is gluten-free, as is the dipping sauce (but NOT the gravy). The fries are not on the gluten-free list because a few small locations share fryers, but in full... -

If I recall correctly, Heinz regular ketchup is gluten-free. I don't use ketchup myself, though. Try these links for useful information: Unsafe ingredients. Safe ingredients. Open Original Shared Link If you don't see "wheat, rye, barley, barley malt, oats" on the labels, its not there, or hidden in "flavors, starches, etc." I am not a...

ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
This sent me waaaay back. I have a memory of this song playing in December of 1966 while I was visiting my uncle and his family in in California. I just get this image of a yellow VW beetle, uncle Pete (after whom I am named), and this song playing. Now I can't get it out of my mind. -
ARCHIVED Cookware - Do I Need To Dispose Of Some Things?
psawyer replied to LeslieN's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wooden spoons, and anything else made of wood, may retain gluten since they are porous. It is almost impossible to completely clean a toaster of crumbs. They are not expensive. Buy a new one, and use it exclusively for gluten-free stuff. Non-stick cookware was once a concern. The original Teflon pans of 40 years ago would scratch if you looked at them... -
ARCHIVED What's The Deal With M&Ms (In Canada)?
psawyer replied to anna34's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They contain no gluten, but Mars will not claim that they are gluten-free because there are products made in the same facility which do contain gluten. Like most mainstream companies, they do not test their ingredients or products for gluten. I eat them occasionally and have never had a problem. -
ARCHIVED Cover Girl Lashblast Synthetic Vit E?
psawyer replied to dbhickma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"...the CSR said that it would say on the label if it were derived from wheat, barley, oats, etc and that this lashblast mascara was synthetic made. I looked on the label and it doesn't really say." So, they told you that the label would mention the gluten grain if it was present. You didn't see the grain named on the label. They told you the source of... -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Frozen Foods Concerns..
psawyer replied to zebaldwin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You must make a personal decision on this. In the USA, the term "gluten-free" is not defined by a government rule. It means whatever the company wants it to mean, or whatever the plaintiff's lawyer can convince a jury it should mean. In those places where there is a definition, including Canada, it deals only with intentional ingredients. Disclosure... -
ARCHIVED Tricked Into The Blood Test And I Need Resources!
psawyer replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you have been on the gluten-free diet for a year, any medical tests will come back negative. They measure the reaction to gluten. No gluten--no reaction. Your doctor, and your husband, don't seem to grasp this. Perhaps you should find a new doctor... -

ARCHIVED How Many People Are Actually Self-diagnosed?
psawyer replied to no-more-muffins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It would seem appropriate to remind everyone of board rule #1: Do not be abusive or otherwise out of line towards other board members. Show respect for each board member, no matter what you think of their views. This is not a place to quarrel. -
ARCHIVED Soy Sauce
psawyer replied to xabbar's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think you are missing anything--wheat would be listed if it were an ingredient. There are some soy sauces that do not include wheat. Many products which are, in fact, gluten-free are not so labeled to avoid legal liability issues. -
ARCHIVED Real Potato Chips
psawyer replied to mmmSmores's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most plain chips consist of potatoes, salt, and some form of oil. There is no MSG in them. Flavored chips (especially BBQ) may contain MSG or some form of gluten. Some people, including some people with celiac disease, react to MSG, but there is no correlation between the two sensitivities. -
What do you think you are reacting to in the broth? Wheat must be disclosed by law. Barley can hide, but must be listed as something, possibly "natural flavor." Neither oats nor rye are going to find their way into a broth. You might have an issue with MSG. MSG is gluten-free, but some individuals, including some celiacs, have a problem with it.

ARCHIVED Why Mcdonalds Sucks
psawyer replied to ErraticBinxie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
This is by far the most discussed topic in the history of this board. A wheat-derived ingredient is contained the in the artificial "beef" flavor that is added to the oil in which the potato pieces are partially fried prior to being frozen. At the store they are fried in vegetable oil in dedicated fryers used only for potato products (fries and hash browns... -

ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi, guys! After a couple of balmy days when I did not need a coat, winter has returned. It's 22oF with winds gusting to 25 mph. Brrrr. Monday is a holiday here in Ontario, and we're taking a four-day break from work. We will stop by the store briefly on Monday to feed the cats. -
Before I was diagnosed, I had night sweats, and cold sweats during the day. I would wake up with the bedding wet sometimes. During the day I would sometimes become nauseous and and break into a cold sweat. All of this went away post-diagnosis once I went gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Yeast Extract
psawyer replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Although barley can be used in the process to create yeast extract, the amount of barley prolamin (avenin) is less than one part per million in the result. When the percentage of the product that is represented by the yeast extract is considered, the final product contains at most a few parts per billion of avenin--far, far below detectable levels. Yeast...
