I have a whole slew of appointments in the next few months to figure out what is wrong with me. I'm really worried about seeing the neurologist for the MRI in case this is something neurological. (I've been having muscle twitches and headaches). Aside from that I have an appt. with a psychiatrist for anxiety and a rheumatologist for the joint/muscle pain (also worried about RA or Lupus).
Anyone else see many different specialists before being diagnosed? Was anyone also screened for MS or another neurological problems because of their symptoms?
I have been seen by a neurologist due to migraines since I was 11..now 49,also seen a phsycologist foe depression, and had an MRI ...and was tested for RA...I have severe muscle and joint pain. I sometimes get the twitching at night while lying in bad,but its not constant.I don't know if its all related to gluten or not. I guess they just have to rule out everything...good luck to you.

Are Fruity Pebbles gluten-free?

I agree. Two days is nothing. Most doctors will recommend eating gluten for 2-3 months prior to celiac testing.
If you are doing a food sensitivities test from a naturopath (based on IgG testing) then you probably only need a few days of exposure. Those tests will not tell you if you have celiac disease though, and they are not widely recognized as medically valid tests... That being said, I know of a few people who had great luck with those tests (but about as many who did not).
Best wishes.
That's what I thought. My Family dr is doing a celiac panel...shes the one who said two days. I am seeing my gastro in May....Im hoping he will give me the correct information if he is doing any tests. I was doing so well for two months...and now I am eating gluten again and feeling horrible.

I'm confused right now, after doing research on the internet and Dr telling me I have a gluten allergy. last night I had someone on here tell me there is no such thing has a gluten allergy. I'm waiting when test results for celiacs disease. but if I don't have celiacs disease and there is no such thing as a gluten allergy. what in the world is wrong with me? it has to be something with gluten because when I don't eat gluten I feel better. can someone please explain this to me, because I am so confused right now. Thank u.... I'm sorry I feel dumb asking. But I have dealt with this all my life and I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope....
I believe a gluten allergy is Celiac, where a gluten sensitivity is not. This is what I belive is wrong with me,and will be tested again next month.

Hi......I am once again being tested through bloodwork and was told to eat gluten for 48 hours prior...is this correct?
-
So you pretty much diagnosed yourself as far as a gluten sensitivity goes.I did the same...after seeing doctor after doctor, with no answers..I finally realized that when I cut back on gluten I felt so much better..no bloating, gas, fatigue, ect.I told my doctor this and he then tested me for Celiac..it came back negative. He also tested me for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth...and said that's what was wrong. He prescribed meds...and they didn't work,so he once again tested me for celiac, and it came back negative.I did a lot of reading back then(2009)and found that bacterial overgrowth can actually cause the gluten sensitivity.I decided to go gluten free...and did wonderful for almost a year, but then I started introducing gluten into my diet again,a little at a time...and I am ok as long as I don't overdo it.Im not a doctor, but as far as I know,Celiac is a lot worse...I believe that you cant have any gluten in your diet at all.

You may want to check out this thread. I have had definate DH but after looking at some of the pictures of HD I realized that may have been what I had on my back and the back of my neck. You can find images of it by doing a image search on the net. As with you my lesions were not itchy in those spots but were very painful and left the same purplish scars that my DH lesions did on my arms and legs. It has resolved for me on the diet.
Thankyou...I will check it out!

No there needs to be active lesions. That said some derms will allow you to call them when the rash is active if they know from your first appointment that is what you are looking for. The DH rash also leaves distinctive purplish scars that take a long time to fade. Seeing those from past rashes will encourage them to allow you to call when the rash is active and get you in fast.
Well, then the rash that I was referring to probably wasnt DH because it didnt leave purple scars, just very itchy..but I do get what looks like a pimple here and there(usually my face and neck area)but it stays there a long time and does leave a purple scar that takes forever to fade.I never concidered it a rash because it looks more like a single pimple..but it also is painful..not itchy though.DH is itchy, right??

If there was gravy there likely was gluten. Usually gravy has wheat unless it is a gluten free gravy. Then the package will say so. If you suspect DH if you go to a derm and ask them to check for it they can biopsy the area next to the lesions to look for the antibodies. The biopsy has to be from clear skin not the lesions themselves.
So...can I have the biopsy done even when I dont have the rash??That would be good being that it can take forever to get an appiontment with the dermatologist and by that time it may be gone.

Im wondering the same thing.I went gluten free in March(well...not 100 percent because I was just learning about all the hidden glutens in things).Anyway,in April I broke out with this horrible red itchy rash all around my mouth and chin..it was soooooo itchy and ugly..had very tiny blisters that would secrete a yellow crust when it dried.I went to the doctors and he said it was a viral rash and gave me meds.About 5 days later it was way worse..went to the E.R. and they said Impetego..gave me more meds and ointment.10 days later, after going away in that time,it appeared again..back to the doctors..he said it was MRSA..gave me more meds and ointment..went away..a week later it appears again...back to the E.R...they do a culture..find no bacteria,so they say contact dermatitis...GGGGRRRR!Anyway,its been 2 and a half months..I woke up today and feel like its coming back..the burning and itchy feeling is there,as well as the reddness starting. The only thing that i did different is I ate some salsbury steaks with gravy, and it probably had gluten in it,so now Im wondering..being that I went gluten free in March, maybe I am seeing DH all this time when I accidently gluten myself????I have heard that your body reacts quicker to being glutened once you are off of it.Any comments would be appreciated.

This sounds nothing like my DH. Never had purple scars for one. My DH was like the blisters you get from a burn or poison ivy, not red spots. And VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY itchy. I also never had DH on my face.
Did I mention that it itched like crazy?
richard
I can't say that mine are ever itchy...they just hurt and leave a purple scar...that takes forever to go away.

From what I am reading here (I am a newbie, too)everyone reacts differently. Some have an almost immediate reaction to gluten, while others can have symptoms a day or two later. My experience with gluten is almost immediately..If I were to eat what you did,I would be in misery right away..I would have the extreme bloating, constant gas,and a feeling of fullness like I just ate a huge Thanksgiving meal.Hope you feel better soon!

The tell-tale is the long-lasting purple scar, and the pain. This definitely sounds like DH, and DH is celiac diseae. There are many false negatives on the blood testing. And your positive response to the gluten free diet reinforces this self-diagnosis, especially if you have had no more red bumps lately.
So,then you cant have DH with gluten intolerance...only celiac disease?Hhhhmm..makes me wonder just how much these doctors really know about celiac disease.Thankyou for your quick reply.

About 5 years ago when I started having stomach issues(going through a divorce)I also started getting these little red bumps here and there, usually around my hairline and neck, shoulders and a few on my face. They sort of resembled an acne pimple, but when I tried to squeeze it(sorry..thats gross,I know)it wouldnt burst, but it would eventually open and sting and hurt also.Every one of these would take forever to heal(weeks to a month or more)and then I would end up with a purple scar that takes months to go away.I know what an acne pimple feels like..and this is not it...but I dont know for sure what HD feels or looks like.I self diagnosed myself with gluten intolerance a few months ago,and have read that with celiac disease you can have HD,but what about gluten intolerance?I had two blood tests for celiac and they both came back negative, but I feel so much better since going gluten free.

The original poster stated they were still getting small amounts of gluten in their diet and that the gas was linked to that. That was what I was responding to. There are some of us who are gas free without gluten, like myself, there are others of course who have the issue related to other foods.
This has been an ongoing problem for me the past 5 years..and never knew that it was being caused by gluten until I went gluten free in March.I felt so much better almost immediately.I've been doing well until about a week ago...I started to cheat here and there, and now Im paying for it..Im bloated and gassy and feel like crap!Tommorow is a new day..and Im starting fresh. No more cheating for me..I want to feel good..not full of gas.
-
Oh yes...this was one of the biggest emmbarrasments about the whole stomach issue.I could never sit in a quiet room with others because it was so loud..they would think I was passing gas!It was horrible!!!I went gluten free and things are much much better..but now Im on antibiotics and I think thats stirring things up again.I also use to shake my car keys or something to hide the noises.

The pins and needles feeling is one of the many possible symptoms of Celiac. I had it in my lower legs, arm, and face. It subsided gradually with the gluten-free diet--a helpful supplement to use would be vitamin B12 (sublingual). I used it for several months--it took about 18 months for the neuropathy to go away completely.
Wow!I never associated that with celiac.I sometimes get that same feeling but its on my scalp. It feels like thiers a bunch of bugs crawling around and when I scratch..nothing happens..it just keeps feeling that way.I had a negative blood test for celiac..but I know Im atleast gluten intolerant..will this kind of thing happen to people with only a gluten intolerance?

I apologize, I tried posting this earlier this evening but don't see it anywhere? First post, so totally probable that I did something wrong.
It has not even been a full week since my doc asked me to go gluten free. I've been having stomach issues that are progressively getting worse (not alarmingly fast, but a noted change recently). I'd given up dairy hoping that it would resolve the issues (pain, bloating, not hungry for several days at a time) and it has helped, but not made it go away.
Anyway, I went through a total food/spice/dressings/etc cleanse in my kitchen and stocked "safe" foods with the help of a gluten free friend. However, these past few days I am feeling WORSE than before? I feel even more full all of the time, semi-bloated and just lethargic.
Are these normal detoxing signs as the levels slowly go down in my system?
I went gluten free last month and noticed a huge difference almost immediately.Im not sure if your symptoms can be from the gluten-free diet, but Im guessing that they arent.Could it be something else, and not a gluten sensitivity?
