For me, I am very thankful that products/manufacturers who label their items "gluten-free" will tell me that the item was produced in a place that also processes gluten-containing items. Then, it is my choice if I feel it is appropriate for ME to consume. If they didn't have to say their products were produced in a shared facility, then I would always be...

Has anyone used a product called lactulose for relieving constipation? My GI specialist favors it over products like Metamucil because it works better with those who have damaged intestines in conditions like celiac (and Crohn's too, apparently). It doesn't cause dependence like true laxatives, either. Just wondering how you found it worked for you.

ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Items That "got You"
masterjen replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ensure, which is labeled gluten-free, got me: "three for three" ie. drank 3 of them, one every 2nd or third day, and got migraines 30 - 90 min. after drinking a bottle. -
ARCHIVED Ensure Gluten Free?
masterjen replied to fakename's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In the first couple of weeks after I was diagnosed, I tried a small bottle of Ensure every 3rd day or so to put on on some much-needed weight. I bought a 6-pack of them, and though the package said gluten-free, I drank a total of 3 bottles, and ended up with severe migraines 3 times (the onset of the migraines ranged from 30 min to 1.5 hours post-ingestion... -
I posted this in another section, but no responses, so I thought I would try this one! Has anyone heard of or tried the Alpha line of supplements? There is one called Alpha ENH, another called Alpha PMX, and a couple of others. They provide all-round nutrition, rather than just protein. The PMX adds extra protein for those of us who feel our work-outs...

ARCHIVED Rib Cage Pain?
masterjen replied to book-worm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have had rib-cage pain also! I have areas of sharp pain when I press on the lower edge of the ribs on the left side, and higher up on both sides I have a sense of pressure/heaviness that can become worse for no rhyme or reason that can spread into my back and cause breathlessness - not short of breath, more like feeling winded. I am being sent for a bone... -
Thanks, Darissa!

ARCHIVED Having A Hard Time W/ My Son And His Diagnosis
masterjen replied to macocha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
First, a brief background about me: I have a degree in psychology. I'm an adult now, but have had disabilities/impairments my whole life, and I remember all too well what it was like to recognize I was "different" and couldn't do some things other kids could. So, I hope you are willing to hear my take on the situation. What goes through my mind when... -
ARCHIVED Eating Out
masterjen posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm 2-months post celiac diagnosis, and at this point I refuse to eat out at a restaurant. In my view, it is one thing to tell the server/cook that you need to have a gluten-free meal, but then the cook may give orders to a less well-intentioned "kitchen-helper", who may stir pots or spread sauces or whatever with contaminated utensils. Another example... -
I really appreciate the supportive and encouraging input! Thank you!!! It helps to hear this from those who also love to work-out and exercise, rather than to hear comments from my non-exerciser friends and family who say 'you were probably working out too much before anyway" - lol.

ARCHIVED How Long Does It Take To Feel Better?
masterjen replied to Wapondi's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I, too, am very thankful I discovered this website. I think it should be recommended to any newly-diagnosed celiac. Anyways, I was dagnosed (and went gluten free) 2 months ago, and like you still have symptoms (rib/intestinal discomfort, bouts of muscle weakness, low-grade headaches, twitching muscles, low energy, and difficulty concentrating). I, too... -

I am about 2-months post-diagnosis, and I am only eating pure/whole foods: meat, fish, poultry, fresh fruit, and veggies with no sauces and only pepper - and a bit of salt - for spices. (I am also night-shade free, lactose-free, and soy free; was entirely lectin-free but am now slowly adding lectins back in one at a time). Basicaly, I avoid anything that...

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination
masterjen replied to MamaMeagan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What do your reference books say about pans coated with teflon? Mine have some very superficial scratches (would be hard to believe food particles would be caught in them) and have been through the dishwasher. As you say, I want to be as careful as I need to be, but not paranoid . . . -
ARCHIVED Muscle Weakjness / Twitching / Neurological Symptoms?
masterjen replied to GoPhils's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had migraines lasting 2-5 hours, as well as less severe, 6+ hour-long headaches every 2nd or 3rd day. In addition, I've had bouts of muscle weakness (unrelated to being hungry), muscle tremors even with minor physical exertion, decreased visual acuity, difficulty focusing/concentrating, memory difficulties, balance difficulties, problems with fine motor... -
I am considering purchasing some Alpha PMX (I think this is the one that has the extra protein, which is the one I'm interested in). The reason I'm interested is I still have days where eating is sometimes difficult, and I like the balanced nutritional profile of the Alpha products. Also, I typically work out a lot (although haven't been able to start up...

I eat far more fruits and veggies than I did before I went gluten-free, but I still struggle with constipation. I have been taking metamucil twice per day (which I will increase to 3 times per day). I also find a 1/2 cup serving of junior baby-food prune puree every 2 days helps.

Working out is a passion of mine; what might be called a hobby. However, the worst of all the celiac symptoms kicked in when I was diagnosed (in Feb. 2010). When I've tried to work out, even for 10 minutes and doing perhaps a tenth of the intensity I normally would train at, I would end up with muscle tremors, extreme weakness, and then headache. I have...

ARCHIVED Strange Gut Reactions To Not Being Upright After Eating?
masterjen replied to playin-d-fiddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had bloating that became severe (along with other symptoms) around Christmas (2009), and was diagnosed with celiac about 6 weeks later. When I started going gluten-free, the bloating gradually subsided, and now, if I do get any, it tends to be minor. Like you, the bloating would start shortly after eating, and after a few hours the gas would finally start... -
ARCHIVED Lost Almost 4 Lbs In 8 Hours Of . . .
masterjen posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been on a gluten-free diet for 7 weeks, but wasn't feeling any better (I know it takes time but I'm impatient - what can I say?!) so I also went soy and lectin-free 2 weeks ago. My plan has been to slowly add in lectins then soy, and have now added milk and eggs (one at a time, with about 5 days in between). Today I decided to add rice, starting with... -
I wonder if I could pretend to eat it and then hide it in a napkin.......(quote) LOL! I've done this . . .

I have no advice, only empathy (sorry!). I'm now 6-weeks post celiac diagnosis, and have been gluten-free and lactose-free for this time. In the past 4-5 days I've also been following a very strict diet involving grain-free, bean/lentil-free, and night-shade free (and if I don't improve I'm planning on going totally lectin-free, which will add in milk and...

ARCHIVED What Vitamins/supplements Should I Get?
masterjen replied to Joe0123's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would suggest you get blood tests done to determine if you are low in any vitamins or minerals (I'm not sure if they can test for all of the main ones or not, but they can test several). I know that some vitamins can cause harm if taken in excess, so you don't want to take what you don't need. If you suffer from weakness, like I have, ask that your potassium... -

Less than 36 was considered normal at the clinic I went to. My reading was listed as ">200".
