ARCHIVED Allergy Shots For Gluten Intolerance?Black Sheep replied to Black Sheep's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Ohmygosh. At 5 years old, I had a "mysterious" kidney infection that almost killed me. Then a few more throughout the next several years, though none as severe as the first. It left my kidneys scarred, and they never were able to figure out the cause of the infections. I'm also hypothyroid. I'm sorry but--what's DH?

ARCHIVED Completely DisappointedBlack Sheep replied to newgfcali's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Oh, I'd forgotten about them. I had them replaced with the porcelain or whatever it is, about 3 1/2 years ago. But I didn't realize at the time (which was dumb) that when you do this, you're supposed to do a heavy-metal detox, at least for mercury, because removing them releases a lot of mercury. Then last year, when my doc had me do the detox, I was researching...

ARCHIVED Shocking Places You've Found Gluten!Black Sheep replied to GFLindsey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I found that my Nature's Organics (well, I think that was the name) lotions had wheat amino acids. I gave them to my daughter but now I want them back so I can throw them away, as she and I are both now 100% sure she has a major gluten problem. But she doesn't want to get rid of them. Should have stolen them when I was at her apt. the other day....I could...

ARCHIVED Anyone Know Anything About Avocado Allergies?Black Sheep replied to Black Sheep's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut Good to know I'm not the only one! On Wed. I ate a very healthy, g.f. meal at a restaurant, and the side dish was a lovely mix of fresh organic fruit. Oh boy. Got the same reaction as with the avocado, only this time I got diarrhea as well. I don't think it was the grapes or pineapple, as I've eaten both since going g.f. (and all my life), so I'm thinking...

ARCHIVED Completely DisappointedBlack Sheep replied to newgfcali's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Ummm....you know, I'm sure it was all that pineapple upside-down cake I'd been consuming! In answer to your question--and I hope I don't get in trouble here--I'm not sure. I drink filtered water, don't use pewter plates or anything...I did however, grow up sort of between 3 military bases, and found on the EPA's site reports of the horrific poisoning...

ARCHIVED Allergy Shots For Gluten Intolerance?Black Sheep replied to Black Sheep's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms So....where do the antibodies attack first, in someone who's gluten intolerant? Or where do they attack first in someone who has full-blown celiac? This is fascinating, and I'm grateful for everyone's help here, thank you!

ARCHIVED Hey New To The ForumsBlack Sheep replied to Glutenfreenoobie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms Your fatigue may be a symptom of withdrawl. A detox thing. I've been fatigued for years, to the point of one doc thinking I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. But shortly after going off gluten, ohmygosh! It was awful. I could barely keep my eyes open, and felt so weak and run-down, it was all I could do to get up out of my recliner (which I practically lived...

ARCHIVED Hey New To The ForumsBlack Sheep replied to Glutenfreenoobie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I hate getting blood tests, too! They always hurt so much due to my low pain threshold (which may be due to gluten causing neurotransmitter problems, according to my doc); also because my veins are hard to find, and collapse. Ugh. If I were going to get tested, which I'm not, I think I'd do the Enterolab stool test. I don't have insurance, for one, and...

ARCHIVED Allergy Shots For Gluten Intolerance?Black Sheep replied to Black Sheep's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms That's I'm thinking this woman must be more inclined toward a wheat or other grain allergy, as opposed to celiac. It seems that if she were truly celiac, she wouldn't even have gluten in her kitchen. And although she's not the chef, she is the one who makes the seafood chowder, and she said I couldn't have that because she thickens it with flour. O.k....

ARCHIVED Completely DisappointedBlack Sheep replied to newgfcali's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Oh, I'm glad for those links! For years, my balance has been "off". Sometimes I'll be walking along and suddenly reel like a drunk for a moment. In my house, I'll be walking to or from a room and hit the doorway! Not run into like from walking directly into it, but like, suddenly lose my balance a little and bump into it. My daughter was here a couple of...

ARCHIVED Eating OutBlack Sheep replied to masterjen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease I can't imagine not eating out on occasion! When we're doing a lot of running around on business in other towns, especially. And my hubby would be one bummed-out guy if we never ate out, as well. So I just try to be really careful, explain my situation, and ask lots of questions, in a non-demanding, gracious way. Yes, it's a real pain, having to explain...

ARCHIVED Completely DisappointedBlack Sheep replied to newgfcali's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Maybe someday my neurons will grow back. I'm such a dork--Sarah, I replied to your "Bob's" post right from page 2, never realizing there was a page 3! So I get to page 3 and find an entirely different direction.....like you health, with your kids, and hubby in school....good grief, you have a lot on your plate! Sorry about the screw-up....and I...

ARCHIVED Completely DisappointedBlack Sheep replied to newgfcali's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips "Okay everyone! Do not keep bashing Bob's Red Mill! They really do make some really great gluten free stuff, and the best thing about it is they have a dedicated facility for all their stuff that says gluten free on it. There are not too many companies that do that." This is too funny! Sarah, I wouldn't worry about it! Not that I can speak for...

ARCHIVED Allergy Shots For Gluten Intolerance?Black Sheep posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I went to a restaurant today I'd never been to. Although they're not a g.f. place, it's a small gourmet place where, when I told them I can't eat gluten, they assured me that everything is fresh, organic, and made from scratch, and they are willing to fix things however you want. Which is true, and it was great! Well, except for something left me with the...

ARCHIVED Hey New To The ForumsBlack Sheep replied to Glutenfreenoobie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I have a friend who says that MSG is also a neurotoxin. Does anyone know anything about this? Or any good sites I could go to, to read up on it? G.F.noobie, re. your stomach upset, I was wondering: are you talking about something that feels like indigestion, and/or acid reflux? Because if you are, I have some experience with that, unfortunately. What...

ARCHIVED Completely DisappointedBlack Sheep replied to newgfcali's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Oh, nooo.... My sweet, thoughtful son and d.i.l. just bought me a bag of that mix, along with some other g.f. stuff when they went to the store. Just 'cuz they love me! No really, they do love me! They just don't know anything about g.f. stuff! I don't remember if I've ever tried the baking mix. A couple of years ago, hubby and I went on a detox...

ARCHIVED Could These Symptoms Be From Gluten, Or Food Allergies?Black Sheep posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My kids are grown, so I hope you don't mind if I ask a question here on behalf of a young couple I know with a sick 2 year old. She's been sick a lot lately, and a couple of nights ago they had to rush her to the ER because she was having rapid, labored breathing, and "tummy troubles," as the mom put it (not sure then, exactly what kind of "tummy troubles...

That sounds pretty cool! I think I'll have to hold off on it though, until I can have more tests done and get all that paid for. I'm having a problem with the calorie thing, because how do you know how many calories are in a slice of made-from-scratch g.f. bread, or pizza? Hmmm....I think if I ever happen to be in a city where there's a store that sells...

ARCHIVED Looking For A Flour SubstitutionBlack Sheep replied to jrh1017's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips That's been my experience so far, as well. My doc never said not to eat oats, just to make sure they were cert. g.f., and they don't bother me at all. I don't know, maybe it's because I ate oatmeal, and cooked a lot with oats before? And also, I'd been experimenting with different g.f. flours for a long time before, just to see what they were like--including...

ARCHIVED Reverse-Engineering Udi's BreadBlack Sheep replied to RiceGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips I'm such a dork! I just now noticed Rice Guy's post, don't know how I missed it! Sorry Rice Guy, you basically said the same thing, I think. Didn't mean to parrot you.

ARCHIVED Reverse-Engineering Udi's BreadBlack Sheep replied to RiceGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Well, since this looks like a fairly old thread, maybe by now you've perfected it. If so, then disregard! But if not....o.k., I'm not sure this will help, since it appears you're not using yeast in this bread. But baking powder is a leavening agent, so maybe the theory would work...just have to try it and see, I guess, unless we have any chemistry wiz's out...
