  1. I've always attributed the rash on my shoulders and upper arms to damage from a bad sunburn a few years back. It's a bunch of tiny bumps, kind of that chicken-skin, but rarely itches. I've tried various lotions, but it's come and gone for at least 2 years. I also have bumps and scabs on my scalp. I'm just starting a gluten-free diet (about a week in, but...
  2. The genetic issue is a good point. I'm sure one of them will notice what's not on my plate so there's likely to be some general discussion. I plan to avoid any breads and those obvious gluten sources, but I won't be reading the labels on everything she serves so my biggest risk is the small amounts that might be in anything and everything. My mom heard the...
  3. Ok, I'll toss that box and do some shopping this week. The gluten-free cereals I've tried so far are pretty good.
  4. To go with GFLindsey's Rice Chex comment, I have a cereal question: Are Corn Flake's and Rice Krispies safe with Malt Flavoring toward the top of the ingredient list? I almost got Corn Flake's last week and decided not to because I wasn't too sure. Wheat isn't listed under the allergens for either. Instead I got Corn Pops which has wheat starch towards...
  5. Sandsurfgirl- I wasn't planning on doing that 8 week challenge. I don't think it's worth it either. I haven't seen a GI yet, just going through my primary doctor and he's not too concerned (all he said was "If you eat something that hurts, don't eat it again. Call me if you have any problems."). So I'm going to try gluten-free for a while and then see what...
  6. What five foods did you start with? I've cut out a lot of things but I'm still eating rice, rice cakes, rice noodles, potatoes and sweet potatoes (also Irish so replacing bread with potatoes was a natural step), peanut butter, fruits and veggies and all sorts of rice snacks marketed as gluten-free. I'm feeling somewhat better after only a few days, but wonder...
  7. I have just started a gluten-free diet and am struggling with the cafeteria. I have only been eating the fruit (bananas, oranges, etc all uncut with peels still in place so no cross contamination) and some raw veggies. I'm sure there's a good chance of cc with the veggies, but the caf is my only source for them as I don't have a fridge (my next work-study...
  8. I have been suspecting a wheat/gluten sensitivity, but none of my tests have been very telling so I'd like to go gluten-free for a while and then see what happens if I go back on. I've only been gluten-free for a few days (albeit with a few gluten additives and other questionable sources); how long do I keep it up before glutening?
  9. I'm only 20, but have had 6 knee surgeries (1 ACL repair, 3 for patella maltracking, and 1 each for hardware removal and neuroma excision) in as many years. My intestinal problems started while I was taking massive amounts of Ibuprofen. After about 4 weeks, I connected the two and switched to glucosamine (January) hoping to manage my knee pain. I noticed...
  10. Thank you for your response. This forum has been really helpful in considering all of my symptoms and some things I never gave much thought to, but may have been signs all along. I am now only a few days into being completely gluten-free, but I am feeling better much better. Even the year-old eczema-like rash on my upper arms has all but disappeared.
  11. While I tested negative for Celiac-sprue (likely a false result since I had been gluten free for almost a week) my hemoglobin was a low 10.8. I'm usually a steady 13.6 so we assumed a lab error at first and wasn't concerned. When I saw him about 2 weeks after the original labs he decided to check it again. No change; 10.8 exactly. He sent me to the hospital...
  12. I'm new to this and have been having the same problem. For months before I thought of the possibility of a wheat or gluten allergy/intolerance, I would be very bloated, cramped and constipated for a few days followed by a day or two of diarrhea and then finally a normal day or two before the cycle started all over again. Once I tried cutting out wheat, this...
  13. Mamaw, Thank you for your reply. I had been planning to talk to the food service director but have been putting it off... Denial, perhaps? However, I just sent him an email with some general questions and asking if we can meet. Until then, I will continue eating only the good fresh food and returning to my room for rice, rice noodles, rice cakes and the...
  14. I started getting abdominal pain while taking 2000+ mg/day of Ibuprofen for over a month for knee pain. I finally connected the two and stopped; replaced it with Glucosamine. I was ok for a while but the pain came back. Stopping the glucosamine didn't have any affect on that pain. I did notice that it was worst after eating, especially bread products so I...
