ARCHIVED Can Ab Workouts Aggravate Intestinal Inflammation?
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Sports and Fitness
I always stretch; I guess it's time to start stretching more. This hasn't been the greatest central-MN kayak season so maybe I'm just more out of shape than I thought. -
ARCHIVED Breaking Out Since Going Gluten Free
bridgetm replied to kimann79's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been breaking out too. I always had clear skin and made it to age 20 with only a monthly zit, but within 2 months of going gluten-free I started breaking out. My face only, not itchy and completely different from the DH on my arms. It's weird and frustrating but it is managable so I guess I can't complain. -
Thanks for the tip I always forget to look at Kowalski's (I always come out of there with more than I need so I try not to explore too much), but with your tip in mind I wandered a bit more last time and found it! The co-op in downtown Stillwater also carries it and sometimes they have their muffins (Amazing!). The lunch counter there also offers gluten...

ARCHIVED Can Ab Workouts Aggravate Intestinal Inflammation?
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Sports and Fitness
It's nice to hear it's not just me. Before I had to go gluten-free I was doing a lot of crunches, sit-ups and kayak workouts and had no problems; just that nice burn after a good workout. Every time I have tried doing more than a few crunches it felt like I had been glutened. Didn't think a hard paddle would do the same. Thanks for the replies -
ARCHIVED Self Diagnosed- And Fell Off The Wagon
bridgetm replied to BcG3987's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A potato note: Alexia makes great fries of all varieties. Sweet potato, chipotle sweet potato, salt and pepper yukon, plain yukon, etc. And if you ever have trouble with soybean oil, these are still safe. -
It's not exactly fast food, but I've had good luck with Perkin's. Of course, some of the waitstaff are less inclined to listen and help you out than others, but once I start explaining my situation they'll usually work with me. I always order eggs and either bacon or ham. If you don't have a problem with soybean oil, the hash browns should be safe too. It...

ARCHIVED Can Ab Workouts Aggravate Intestinal Inflammation?
bridgetm posted a topic in Sports and Fitness
I went out in my kayak yesterday for the first time in over a week. It got pretty windy on the lake so it turned into a total body workout. My abs, upper and lower, were burning after paddling a half mile with the wind and a half mile against it through a 2-3 foot swell with some ski-boat wake thrown up along the way. I noticed last night and this morning... -
Luckily I wandered into a store full of Udi lovers who recommended it right away when I said I was new. I have since found it in the freezer cases of a few local grocers (though they don't restock often, apparently not in high demand in my neighborhood) so I don't always have to go 20 miles to the gluten-free store (Tailor Made Nutrition in Woodbury, MN;...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pulling A Bait And Switch
bridgetm replied to kimann79's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Same story here. I felt great for about two weeks, then stalled out. I cut dairy and felt great for another 2 weeks. Stalled again. Then I cut soy. That was about 2 months ago. For the past few weeks, the inflammation has been slowly increasing again so I'm in the process of cutting some forms of fructose and artificial sugars. My BMs are slowly balancing... -

I can't remember the brand name, but I saw some gluten-free breaded chicken at the store a few weeks ago. I haven't had a chance to try it but it looked pretty good. Yesterday marks month four of gluten-free for me. I too am a burger and pasta lover. My mom makes great burgers on the grill, but they do nothing to end the urge for a bacon cheese burger... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Like Symptoms After Consuming Sugar
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thank you for the info. This is another thing to add to my list of life-long problems that no one could identify and didn't seem serious enough to fully investigate. I am in the process of limiting fructose in my diet. Unfortunately I have all this food I should probably begin to avoid, but no one else will eat it and I don't want to throw it out. For now... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Like Symptoms After Consuming Sugar
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Skylark: Is that a temporary thing due to gluten-induced damage or a life-long diet change? I've have to cut out lactose and soy, but I think (and hope) that it will only be necessary until I heal. Raven: I didn't mean diet sugar replacements, although I have experienced symptoms from that stuff too. Before I cut out soda altogether (except for occasional... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Like Symptoms After Consuming Sugar
bridgetm posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Does anyone else experience glutened-like intestinal symptoms after eating a lot of sugar on an otherwise simple diet? Last night I had a small bowl (maybe 1/2 cup) of sorbet, some dark chocolate and some ginger ale. I didn't eat them all at the same time, but somewhere between 4 and 9 pm. Around 10:30 I had sudden diahrrea as if I had eaten a gluteny dinner... -
ARCHIVED Have You Ever Felt Like This?
bridgetm replied to conniebky's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I first started reacting to gluten, I would get full-body tremors and chills and often vertigo and tunnel-vision. Once I was trying to get to the bathroom to throw some cold water on my face and I was so out of it that I walked into the men's room by mistake. I had to take a minute to regroup in the hallway before I could get to the ladies one door down... -
UPDATE: It's only been a few days since I cut out soy and I feel SO MUCH BETTER! I felt pretty good after going gluten-free, but this is beyond that. I had four final exams yesterday and I was able to focus well on each one and wasn't very stressed or tired. I have the day off today and I'm actually looking forward to taking the time to study for tomorrow...

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance And College Meal Plan -- Your Two Cents And Experience Needed
bridgetm replied to Mtb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel your pain! I am trying to opt out of my required 15-meal/week plan (I'll be happy with 5 if they won't let me drop it altogether) for next semester, but administration won't allow it since the cafeteria "can accomodate me". "Accomodate" here means that they do provide a few gluten-free dishes and a fruit and salad bar. Fortunately, the food service... -
Char- I think I'll stick with the basic diet at least through tomorrow. Stomach pain/rumbling is never pleasant, but with a packed test schedule from 8 through 5 on Monday that could get even more ugly . After that, I will probably end up eating some of the things in my 'unsafe' cabinet... Might as well get my money's worth (I spent $5 on a box of Glutino...

Thank you everyone! It does sound difficult, but I'm kind of excited. Here's a problem though: everything I have in my pantry right now that doesn't list soy as an ingredient is processed in a factory alongside soy products... Should I worry about that right now? When I get home I can stay away from packaged foods and have plenty to eat but until I get home...

I'm about 6 weeks in to the gluten-free diet and I finally recovered from last weekend's Target-brand acetaminophen mishap, but now I feel like I'm having a separate attack. Last night I started getting that cramping abdominal pain and a rib/back ache again and it's always worst right after I eat. Looking back at my food diary, I realize my intake of soy...

Back And Rib Pain After Being Glutened
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am already taking Prilosec daily. But I see my doctor for a follow-up hemoglobin check in a week so I'll ask if he'll order a few other tests as long as I'm there. -
Back And Rib Pain After Being Glutened
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you all for your help. Just knowing that it's normal makes me feel better. I am feeling much better today. In just one more week I will be home with farmer's markets nearby and Udi's bread within the same area code. -
Back And Rib Pain After Being Glutened
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's crazy how painful it can actually be and there are so many possible causes. Heart attack came immediately to mind, but I'm 99% sure that's not it My mom reminded me tonight that I was on Prednisone last week to head off an asthma flare-up and these symptoms are similar to those side-effects. I had pushed that to the back of my mind. This must... -
I've noticed that quite a few people have mentioned muscle and rib pain as symptoms and I'm wondering if my symptoms are similar or if I need to keep looking for the cause: I took some Target brand Acetaminophen over the weekend and had the usual abdominal symptoms of a glutening, especially on Sunday and Monday. Since then that pain and discomfort has...

ARCHIVED Generic Acetaminophen?
bridgetm posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been gluten-free for about 6 weeks now. All of my prescription medications and supplements are safe, but I'm concerned about my Target brand acetaminophen. I had been taking the Walgreen's version for a few months and this weekend I combined an old Walgreen's bottle with a new bottle from Target. I've been taking it off and on for knee pain and didn... -
ARCHIVED Fruits And Vegetables!
bridgetm replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll have to pick up some of those wrappers. Sounds perfect for snacks in my kayak or to bring to work. I love fruit, but sometimes it just needs a little something extra.
