  1. Too bad they're taking it down. I could kill a lot of time in waiting rooms or between classes calling that menu.
  2. Someone was making fun of my Bumblebar snack the other day, told everyone I like eating bird seed. I put up with it without a comeback until I saw the sodas and candy bars everyone else was eating for a mid-afternoon snack... "Yes, I eat bird seed. You're eating poison. Care to rethink your position?" I've never seen so many people reading nutritional...
  3. Yes, I have been keeping a food diary. When my symptoms started getting worse last week I looked back in my diary and couldn't find any obvious causes. Then I realized that I had at least one meal day after day for the last week that I made at the Stir Fry Bar in the cafeteria. I had used clean pans and utensils and didn't use any of the soy sauce or teriyaki...
  4. Thank you for your response. I've gotten to the point where I don't notice it as much; it's become my new normal. It's just such an odd symptom. It changes with my diet- a glutening makes it larger and more painful, a few days of simple whole foods make it smaller and less of a nuisance. It seems to be a good way to keep track of how I'm feeling even when...
  5. I'm 3 or 4 weeks into the gluten-free diet and have been keeping a food journal. I had an obvious glutening on Easter; I hadn't told my family yet and wasn't sure how sensitive I am. It took me about a week to recover from that. However, last week I started getting the lower abdominal pain that's not noticable unless my belt is a little too tight or immediately...
  6. There's been a lot of mention of the brick-like mass bulging out from the abdomen. Mine isn't visible (I'm a bit overweight) but I can feel it when I press down. I'm about three weeks in to a diligent gluten-free diet. I first noticed that mass months ago but didn't think much of it until it kept growing. Within the first week of the diet it had started...
  7. I started a women's one-a-day multi-vitamin last week. It has a little of everything in it. I was planning to stick with this until I go back to my doctor (appointment in 4 weeks), but I really don't feel good when I take them (I always take the tablet before bed with a rice cake or two and lots of water; wake up almost nauseous and I can't even think about...
  8. I'm with you in that boat... I'm two weeks in (three or four if you count the not-so-dilegent, experimental weeks) and am debating how to tell my mom that she can't cook me a batch of rice in the same 20+ year old scarred pot that she uses for spaghetti. I'm away at school so she doesn't see how a glutening affects me; only the friends I eat with frequently...
  9. I noticed though that one of the ingredients in the fries is natural beef flavor which they say may contain wheat.

    ARCHIVED Bread

When I went to the gluten-free store for the first time I was led straight to the Udi's. I miss real bread, but Udi's is as close as it gets. I was surprised at how well it toasted. A bit of peanut butter and I almost (almost) forgot that it was gluten free.
  11. I've been drinking lots of water today and eating the basics (fresh fruits, veggies, some lean meat, peanut butter, a potato and some gluten free banana bread). I've noticed some definite improvement though the pain is worst within an hour of eating; the general abdominal pain is now more localized. It's bothering me, but at least I'm not curled up in a ball...
  12. I'm in a similar situation. I had stomach pain for months. Aside from low iron my blood tests and ultrasounds came up clean so my doc ordered the Celiac-sprue test (I noticed that I was feeling worse after a week of my usual not-feeling-well diet of cereals and bread). Negative. He prescribed iron and Vitamin C and told me to check back when I get home for...
  13. I'm not a parent so I haven't checked this board before, but now I'm glad I did. I was told to watch out for the preservatives and fillers in lunch meats, especially salami, bologna, corned beef and hot dogs. I'm new to the gluten-free diet so I've been playing it pretty safe and am especially careful of bologna since my mom refuses to talk about what she...
  14. I felt minor symptoms immediately after that pie incident on Sunday, but I didn't start to get severe abdominal pain until late last night and this morning and it's steadily getting worse. It doesn't help that I crash-tested a few questionable things, such as a single Quaker Quake. I've learned my lesson, but I've just gotten so tired of reading labels and...
  15. I think it's driving my mom crazy because my sister is about 2 weeks into a vegetarian diet and was limiting meat and processed foods for some time before. She does most of the grocery shopping so my mom loved to have me home from school so we could buy a package of cookies or hit the McDonald's dollar menu without feeling too guilty since we were 2 against...
  16. Thank you both for your responses. I tried just a single one late last night and my chest immediately tightened up, I was short of breath and got some abdominal discomfort and pain. Those will definitely be going in the pile of food I'm handing out to my broke, hungry college buddies.
  17. Most of my family, and quite a few friends, are sure that "just a little bit" won't hurt me. "Be polite and take just one bite of the cookie. It won't kill you." Well, no, not immediately. But I will feel as if my intestines are being ripped apart inch by inch killing me slowly. So, no, I will not be 'polite' and take "just one bite". I can always feel...
  18. I've noticed that most flavors of Quaker's large rice cakes are labeled gluten-free and found a press release from a few months ago stating that they had been testing those ones to ensure they were gluten-free. The Quakes are not labeled gluten-free, but have the same basic ingredients. I just bought a bag of the new Vanilla Creme Brulee flavor for something...
  19. Same for me. My aunt put out many options for Easter brunch which were safe for me, but my grandma bought a pie with a bit of a meringue layer and a thin, crispy crust. I have not yet told her about my new gluten-free diet and decided that a large family get-together already just a little tense was not the time to announce the change and the pie was the safest...
  20. I've been having similar sinus problems for the last few weeks. I start to feel all clogged up, but have to avoid blowing my nose because that typically causes a nosebleed. Anti-congestion meds haven't seemed to help so I gave up. I've had the on-off runny nose and congestion issues for months, but tend to attribute it to seasonal allergies and asthma. Every...
  21. Okay, thanks. I haven't had any problems with McCann's Irish Oats, but I'm guessing those are pretty pure. Not sure that I want to test my system with Quaker or anything and I will definitely avoid the Nature Valley... My friends who've run out of dorm food are really happy about my cabinet-purging
  22. This forum has been incredibly helpful to me this week... time for more questions I've only been gluten-free for about a week and just found a pile of Nature Valley peanut butter crunchy granola bars. I keep these around my dorm for between-class power snacks and decided to check the label to see if I should get rid of them or hang on to them. I do not see...
  23. I've been getting that from friends lately. When I sit down with a plate full of fruit and veggies and some rice or mashed potatoes, someone will say, "Oh you eat so healthy! Why are you eating that?" When I say that I don't have much of a choice, they start an inventory of all the food on the table; "Can't you eat this wrap? That ice cream? Cereal? Stew...
  24. Okay, good to know. I didn't know that's how it's processed.
  25. I've had mild lactose intolerance off and on since some time in grade school, but it usually came in waves (one day I could eat a bowl of ice cream with a glass of milk and have no problems and a few days later just a half a glass of milk would land me in the bathroom for a day or two). Out of habit (and never knowing when it will hit me) I typically avoid...
