I've come across the SCD a few times when researching. It is tempting. I'm hoping to see a nutritionist over my winter break and plan to ask about it. Right now I'm just sticking with a bland diet based around rice, potatoes, chicken, turkey and eggs with some fruit, some veggies and occasionally Udi's bread when I can get my hands on it. I have 'episodes...

ARCHIVED Anxious About Thanksgiving
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love this! I used a similar "did you sprinkle any shut-your-mouth over the top?" line on a friend this summer. It actually turned into a fun conversation but only because she can be just as sarcastically cynical as me at times. The delivery would have to be pretty slick to go over with the fam though. How about "I bet if you stopped talking you would be... -
ARCHIVED Anxious About Thanksgiving

Or "Well, what DO you eat???" Well, for starters, there is gluten-free bread. And then there's the novel idea of real food with flavoring agents you can actually pronounce. I get this mostly from classmates who find it hard to believe that someone can live off of anything other than ramen noodles and pizza, but it occasionally comes from frustrated... -

ARCHIVED Anxious About Thanksgiving
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That was my plan And when that's not possible I will be watching those spoons like a hawk. Luckily, in my case, "the whole family" means less than 10, but I haven't eaten at a table of more than 3 or 4 family members since this started. However, I'll have 2-3 people keeping an eye out for me and my plate, who will station me in a chair closest to my staple... -
ARCHIVED Great Experience In Northern Minnesota
bridgetm posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
My family has been going to the North Shore for as long as I can remember. A fall trip (usually MEA weekend) is mandatory. Some of our best memories are of the great waterfront restaurants so I was pretty anxious about this year's trip after only 6 months of gluten-free living. We've been staying in a cabin for the last few years so cooking all my own meals... -
ARCHIVED Anxious About Thanksgiving

Bringing my own is probably a good idea; I was planning to stock up on turkey when it goes on sale for the holidays anyway. Some of my friends thought I was completely OCD for worrying about the stuffing. Thank you for your reply! -
I had been contemplating which of my favorite pre-gluten-intolerance foods could stay on the menu when I found out that plans had already been made to go to a relatives' for dinner. They know about my food problems and have taken steps in the past to ensure that there is something safe for me to eat. However, I have become more sensitive since we last ate...

ARCHIVED Sometimes It's Like Being A Detective....
bridgetm replied to kristianne75's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have taken to calling unknown symptom-causing gluten sources the "unsub" as in Unidentified Suspect... Maybe a sign of too much time in front of the TV. A full-blown gluten reaction is usually easy to trace for me, but when minor symptoms pop up from cross-contamination or maybe foods my stomach just isn't ready for yet, I agree that there is a lot of... -
ARCHIVED Can't Pinpoint What Is Causing My Joint Pain

Yes to the aches. Everything is a little sore today, like every muscle I've pulled in the last 6 months is coming back to haunt me. -
ARCHIVED Can't Pinpoint What Is Causing My Joint Pain
bridgetm replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have joint pain and some arthritis too. I know that I can attribute most of my left knee pain to 6 surgeries and the right is beat up from years of compensating. But some of the things that pop up don't seem related to that history like excessive nerve pain/discomfort. Sure, those surgeries did some damage, but not this much and not to the right knee. I... -
Good to hear there's a reasonably safe backup. Bob's will never beat McCann's though.
-
Wow! Thank you for sharing. I will take those off the shelf and stick with the buckwheat. What's the general consensus on Bob's oats? I have an unopened package of those as well.
-
I am gluten-intolerant but so far no evidence of Celiac. I continued to eat oatmeal frequently when I first started gluten-free in the spring. I kept to McCann's Irish oats because they tasted great, were filling and the company does everything it can to keep them safe (it helps that they are based in Ireland, a country with a large population of Celiacs...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Bread And Fructose Malabsorption
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You make a good point. Maybe my system just wasn't ready for the starch yet. Or maybe it was something else I ate that day. I just went back to my food diary: I ate some applesauce and had some 7Up that same afternoon. That was the day that clinched the fructose malabsorption possibility. I don't want to cut out anything that's not absolutely necessary, but... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Bread And Fructose Malabsorption

Does anyone know of any pre-made breads that are gluten-, soy- AND sugar-free? I'm trying to stick the low-FODMAP diet and have been feeling much better, but my Udi's sets off the stomach pain again. I know there are sugar-free breads out there for diabetics, but is there anything that's also gluten-free and SF? I wouldn't mind mixing it up myself, but I... -
After I missed a week of classes for doctor appointments and testing (finally had an endoscopy; negative biopsy, but "severe reflux") my lit prof told me I should take a cue from Thoreau and live off of air. Pain-free and enlightenment... If only it were possible.
-
Well, now I know where to go when I'm craving a little packet of salsa... Between gluten, milk and soy that's all I can get there. Good to know for road trips
-
Same problem here. I used a lot of eye drops through high school. For a while I was pulling out the bottle between every class, at least 5 times a day; I finally realized they weren't doing much good so I quit and saved a little money. It often feels like I have something in my eye when there is nothing there. I'll run to a mirror to remove what feels...

I always forget that carrots are high in sugar! They are the easiest, most accessible vegetable for me. I don't usually have a problem with them so I guess I'll just have to test that out tonight. Next time I'm at the store I have to pick up some eggs. I can tell I need the protein and fat and they'll liven up my rice and veggies. I've been holding out...

I like my bananas a little on the green side. I have noticed in the past that if I eat a more than one of those a day or just one big one I feel a little bloated later on. I have been eating them regardless this week, just because I need the nutrients. I went to the cafeteria this morning to grab some more fruit and found a couple that were just starting...

Fructose malabsorption is looking like a definite possibility. I had one small box of raisins today (that's just a palm full!) and my stomach has hurt all afternoon. All the fructose lists I've seen label bananas as safe, but I'm having trouble with those too. I think I'll be living off of rice this week. And maybe a rice cake here and there to liven things...

Thank you for your reply Maverick. I'm cutting it out 100% this week and replacing it with whole food since that's really what I need to recover from the last month anyway. I may allow some minor slips; just not 5 in one day like yesterday. I do have a four day midterm break coming up next week and I'm going up to the cabin. Restaurants on the North Shore...

ARCHIVED Rice Bloody Krispies
bridgetm replied to realmaverick's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What really gets me is that these same cereals 20-50 years ago contained exactly what you'd expect (corn, crispy rice) and nothing more. Twinkies for example contain high fructose corn syrup now just because it's available (let the obesity epidemic begin; ever wonder why your mom ate junk food in college and stayed perfectly healthy while we would gain a... -
ARCHIVED Rice Bloody Krispies

I had the same problem with Corn Pops. When I started the diet in the spring, that ingredient list looked safe to me. I had improved enough from dumping the other gluten that I didn't notice much at first but after a week or two my symptoms started coming back. Dropped the Corn Pops and I improved again. The first month or two was an adventure.
