ARCHIVED Nature Valley
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I figure they'll be a nice change from the bars I've been eating: dried fruit and puffed rice will only carry you so far. -
ARCHIVED Nature Valley
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's the one I looked at. I'll try a different store today; CVS probably isn't the most reliable source. -
I initially lost about 30 pounds from the diet-change which was great; nothing else had worked. But now most of my calories are coming from carbs and I've gained about 20 back in the last two or three months. I have trouble digesting veggies and my go-to safe fruit is bananas with apples and grapes for safe variety. Bananas just add to the carbo-loading I...

ARCHIVED Nature Valley
bridgetm posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've read in a few posts lately that Nature Valley has some bars labelled gluten-free, but I've looked at the almond crunch and sweet and salty packages and they have wheat in them. Was I looking at an old shipment? Are the gluten-free ones new? I hope I can find the good ones: those would be a life saver. -
Shauna-- Thank you for your reply. I started reading up on Post after I started this topic. They have definitely raised a few red flags. I'm going to trash what's left of this box and stick to GM's tried and true Chex. The luxury of Fruity Pebbles was beginning to wear off anyway.

I eat my cereal dry. Just the pebbles and a spoon.

I remember we were all excited in the last few weeks about the new 'official' gluten-free label on Fruity/Cocoa Pebbles... Is anyone having trouble with them? I have noticed an all-over DH breakout; most patches are minor, but it's making my scalp raw and shoulders/back really itchy and my face is pink. For the last week I've also had some lower abdominal...

For the first two months or so I had at least one protein bar or shake each day. They really helped during those mid-day slumps when I didn't have enough time between classes to cook. I had to drop most of them because I started to have trouble with soy, but they got me through the worst of that first phase. Boost does contain milk, but they are able to remove...

ARCHIVED Ok Here's A Girlie Question, But I Gotta Know!
bridgetm replied to glutenfreeinminnesota's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been gluten-free for about 11 months and my cycles are all over the place. The last 4 or 5 times I got really sick during my period, with severe intestinal inflammation and all the usual gluten symptoms minus the gluten. Last week I started noticing more inflammation, increasing every day, started my period, but haven't been sick. Last month I really... -
I found them at Target yesterday I was so excited. I needed a change from Chex. Actually, I'll admit that was supper last night

I use canola oil for everything and haven't had any problem (that I know of). I'm soy free so I just stick with canola and olive, but canola is more versatile.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Preschool Teacher
bridgetm replied to iamsarar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
P.S. I could never do your job; I can only imagine how much more difficult it would be to throw in a gluten problem. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Preschool Teacher
bridgetm replied to iamsarar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Is there any possibility of getting an aide or a student teacher who can help out with those activities or at least the prep? I understand it may be difficult to make happen, but it would help you in so many ways; having someone to mix your playdough was a good first step to that. The only other thing that comes to my mind is wash your hands frequently... -
B12 is a nice boost too. I take it every day, but I increase the dose for a few days after I CC'd.

I have been gluten-free for about 10 months (plus 2 if you count the period where I was trying to be gluten-free but ignorant of its presence in everything). I also had to drop dairy, quickly followed by soy. I can no longer tolerate caffeine, but in the early months I hit the coffee hard when I had brain fog. I also slammed water. Now I stick to the...

ARCHIVED How Can I Handle Watching People Eat All The Things I Want To Eat
bridgetm replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm nearly a year in and rarely had food jealousy after the third or fourth month. On the rare occasion that I really want what I see someone else eating, I just think of the physiological reaction that must be happening in that person's body whether they can tolerate that food group or not. Carbs? The build-up of fat cells. Greasy or fatty food? The plaque... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance Is It The Same As Celaic?
bridgetm replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was told that when gluten intolerance causes extensive damage, it is then termed Celiac; if you are gluten intolerant it acts more like a regular food allergy than an autoimmune response. I consider myself simply gluten intolerant because blood work and endoscopy were negative for Celiac. It is still a possibility since I had already been off gluten for... -
ARCHIVED What Helps With Brain Fog?
bridgetm replied to superfob's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Water, water, water. I'm not sure how well it will work since you're still eating gluten, but when I get CC I basically flush it out. A study tip for when/if you are gluten free in the future: When I have midterms or finals coming up I start watching my food really careful a week or more ahead of time. I drop the processed food and don't eat anywhere where... -
ARCHIVED Working Near Wheat Straw
bridgetm replied to Fire Fairy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been wondering the same thing. I go to school in Mankato on a campus surrounded by crop fields. Most of them are corn or soybeans but I know there are quite a few wheat fields as well. When the wind picks up and we start to smell manure I have to wonder what else is being carried in the air. -
ARCHIVED People Who Think They Might Have Celiac
bridgetm replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't give much information either. When people come into the lounge and see me cooking some variation on a rice dish every day I always get questions, but unless it's someone who I can tell genuinely cares I limit my answer to "oh it's quick and easy" or "Rice for me is like your Ramen or Easy Mac". If I'm offered food I can't have I turn down the offer... -
ARCHIVED People Who Think They Might Have Celiac
bridgetm replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Then again we have this forum where we don't have to deal with the "Oh you're so dramatic... Just one bite" comments. You just can't get true understanding from anyone who does not have to deal gluten intolerance or Celiac themselves. -
ARCHIVED People Who Think They Might Have Celiac
bridgetm replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We should start a little utopic-type community where 'food' means real food, from the earth rather than lab-concocted. No crops either of course. -
ARCHIVED Feeling Guilty About Missing School? Teachers Please!
bridgetm replied to hashslingingslasher's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As a college student, I can sympathize. I have these "episodes" of inflammation, severe D, nausea/vomiting, etc., and have missed at least 1 day-- sometimes as many as 5-- days of class each month. Last semester I missed a full week right before midterms. All of my profs knew what was going on and were very helpful. I would have meetings with them after class... -
Every once in a while it helps to stop in at a co-op or organic food store that also caters to food sensitivities. Every one there is just as tired of having to read labels as you. When you go to a regular store where 99% of the shoppers are just tossing things into their carts without even stopping, having to stop and read and compare labels can be painful...

So does mine. Especially the honey variety. Whenever I sit down with a bowl she puts her head in my lap and waits for one to fall.
