ARCHIVED Living With Three Roommates Who "understand"
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's a great idea!! It hadn't even crossed my mind. I got a cutting board I can use as a clean surface, but I would really like more safe work space. I will definitely look into it. -
I have trouble with corn as well. I just have trouble digesting it so it can be too much roughage on my gut. I also have to live corn chips and other processed corn foods. I ate more than half of a large bag of Mission tortilla strips on Saturday (in less than 15 minutes... I was with a friend I hadn't seen in a while and we tend to let ourselves go in the...

ARCHIVED Living With Three Roommates Who "understand"
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My mom's kitchen is fairly gluten free... I didn't crack down too hard since it takes more than a couple of crumbs to really get me. But I suppose it would be a smarter idea to buy something new and 100% CC free instead of just taking a step or two up from what I'm using now. It may have been you, Raven, but I am not sure... Anyway, someone mentioned that... -
ARCHIVED Living With Three Roommates Who "understand"

I do have a lot of red (a strainer, spatulas, sponge). My pots and pans aren't red and I ran out of red tape and ribbon, but they look different enough from theirs (and are in their own cabinet labeled with a pink post-it and red sharpie) that they haven't been too much of a concern. I also started keeping separate butter, peanut butter and such. I agree... -

I'm living in a campus apartment this year-- full kitchen, big fridge and freezer -- with three other girls. They all cook fairly often and we all snack a lot so there are always crumbs around. One of them comes from a family of Celiacs though she doesn't have it herself so she understands the CC issue, but apparently we are all too busy to pick up after... -
I always keep Minute brand in my cabinet. It's cheap, quick and easy. When I want to mix it up a bit, I get Uncle Ben's; the boil-in-bag is great when cooking for more than myself. I just bought a large box on Wal-Mart's version, but haven't tried it yet; Great Value is usually dependable though.

Writers like him piss me off. As a writer myself, I morally object to presenting some tongue-in-cheek rant as a serious review of an event. Sports columnists often make snide comments, but they acknowledge that it's so and surround the statement with something more legitimate. Considering that he's a blogger and not posting to, say, the NY Times, I would...

Sometimes certain sugars can be a problem. You may react to sucrose but not dextrose; agave but not honey. I try to limit my sugar intake to prevent those crashes.

ARCHIVED The Best Ways To Deal With Fructose Malabsorption?
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thank you for the link! I'll definitely check that out. Bananas are the only fruit I can eat consistently. Some berries on occasion and the rare tomato, but bananas are a staple for me. The big problem for me at school is that beans are one of my main sources of protein (cheap, fast and easy) when I'm here but I really have to limit them and plan all my other... -
ARCHIVED The Best Ways To Deal With Fructose Malabsorption?
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Okay, I think I pretty much answered my own question there... How about this one: What foods do you keep at the base of your low-fructose/fructose free diet? When I'm having a lot of trouble, I go back to the simple recovery diet (i.e. white rice, gluten-free bread, bananas, etc.), but unless I'm getting over a glutening I go crazy sticking with that. -
ARCHIVED The Best Ways To Deal With Fructose Malabsorption?
bridgetm posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Last winter I started noticing a problem with fructose, especially in digesting vegetables (tomatoes, corn, sweet potatoes), apples and sugary foods/drinks and also trouble with large amounts of fat (I couldn't digest nuts or seeds and had to watch out for butter and grease). I cut back on these things and noticed improvement. After a few months I began to... -
ARCHIVED Please Share Your Bisquick Recipes

I don't have anything original yet, though I plan to experiment with it this summer. But have you tried the shortcake recipe on the box yet? It's really good, brings me right back to the pre-gluten-free days. We've made them a few times for dessert after dinners with my sister and her BF. Everyone loves them. They are a little dry but not as bad as some other... -
I revisited a family favorite fish and chips pub tonight for the first time since going gluten-free a year ago. The battered fish always topped my list of favorites off their menu, but there are plenty of other options. I was about to order off of the regular menu after having called the manager and told there were plenty of safe options. When I prefaced...

Magnum Ice Cream
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That was my thinking too. I didn't have any problems with the original bars, but I'll probably make these only an occasional indulgence until they get their labeling figured out. They're a bit pricey anyway so I was going to find something cheaper and more reliable to stock in my freezer. -
Magnum Ice Cream

Just avoid the caramel. I ate the original ones with no problems (just ice cream covered in Belgian chocolate) though I should note that I'm not super sensitive. Depending on your daughter's sensitivity and reactions, maybe you should stick with something you know. I have a coupon too; I might check out the double chocolate next time I'm out. -
Magnum Ice Cream

I wish their hotline offered a direct line to customer service. Two things bother me about this label: 1) As you noticed, the label has changed in just the last month and they haven't updated all of their listed (box and website) up to date. 2) I don't understand how carageenan could be listed as a wheat ingredient in the first place. Carageenan comes from... -

I heard that from my mom a few times while we were shopping. The Target I went to only had the Almond Crunch flavor labeled gluten free. I picked it up and said "I heard there's at least one more gluten-free flavor; this looks good but I was hoping for more options." Her response: "Just be happy that they have this one box and that you're finally shopping... -

I finally found a box of the Almond Crunch at Target the other day. They are kind of dry and really hard, but this is my new favorite snack. Since they crumble so easily anyway I might start breaking the bars apart and adding them to trail mix. They'd be great with some chocolate chips and craisins -
Magnum Ice Cream
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I found a box of the original flavor ice cream bars yesterday (just vanilla ice cream with the Belgian chocolate coating) and the label looked safe. No reaction As long as Magnum doesn't change the ingredients of this one like they presumably did with the double caramel, it's going to be a good, ice cream filled summer -
Magnum Ice Cream
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, it is clear and reading that would normally make me put them right back on the shelf and move on, but I had to question it since everything else I had read said they were safe. -

Jwhale: I bought these at Walgreen's; they had a good deal on them this weekend. They only had the double caramel variety. I compared the label on the box to the online listing: Website- INGREDIENTS: ICE CREAM: MILK, CREAM, SUGAR, WHEY, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, LOCUST BEAN GUM, VANILLA BEAN SPECKS, CARRAGEENAN, NATURAL FLAVOR, ANNATTO EXTRACT (COLOR), CARAMEL... -
Magnum Ice Cream
bridgetm replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
These sound like the same ones you bought: box of 3 with Belgian chocolate. I'll avoid them tonight and give Magnum a call in the morning. It didn't list any allergens so if I hadn't read the word wheat I would have gone ahead and eaten one. I haven't been able to find anything on their website aside from an ingredient list and nutritional info identical... -
We found some Magnum ice cream on sale today so we picked up a couple boxes, but I'm having trouble finding info on whether or not they are really gluten-free here in the U.S. The ingredients of the ice cream itself look fine, but the chocolate coating lists carageenan with wheat in parentheses after it. The other components of the ice cream bar also list...

ARCHIVED Mike's Hard Lemonade
bridgetm replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When I go out, I stick with rum and Coke or, depending on the bar, a whiskey 7. None of the bars around here serve gluten-free beer and Woodchuck is too sweet for me. Hard liquor is easy because if you have one or two favorite brands you're guaranteed to find at least one at every bar/restaurant. -

Thanks! Now I'm excited to go grocery shopping. Come to think of it, I'm a bit overdue for a trip to the dentist as well...
