  1. Hi elaonwy, I know what you mean. I have been diagnosed for a year and a half now and I still can't shut up about it. I was so sick for so long that when I went gluten-free it was such an amazing miracle that something so simple as grain had made me so violently ill my whole life. I felt incredibly excited about it, I reasearched like crazy so I had...
  2. Rachel, Unfortunatley citric acid can be a gluten source if produced outside the U.S. It shocked me when I read it. I couldn't believe that something I thought came from citris could actually be made from wheat. Contact the manufacturer. Also since you are sensitive to chemicals, did it have aspertame in it? It bothers me, so I never drink diet. ...
  3. Hi Jim, This may not be the answer you are looking for but a speck of gluten is too much. Celiacs is an autoimmune disease. Our immune systems get screwed up and think that the gluten protein is the same as our bodies own cells. So the immune system sends out anitbodies to "kill" the gluten and in turn "kill" our healthy cells, causing great damage....

    ARCHIVED To Life

My daughter and I went to the beach (Maryland, Delaware beaches) last week. We discovered a new little restaraunt called To life! It's a gluten free restaraunt with online sevices. It's on Rt. 1 N. Ocean city Maryland area right after you enter the town of Fenwick island Delaware. If you are on route 1 and your heading north out of Ocean city, it is on...
  5. Debmidge, Gosh...I really am so sorry he feels so sick. This is all so difficult! I do know a little about how he feels. I had been sick all my life. spent my childhood having every cold and flu that came my way. Strep throat and tonsilitis, missed alot of school. Starting having terrible bone and muscle pain in Jr. high, and stomache problems in...
  6. Oh also... I was so sick that not eating gluten was the obvious "cure" to every one around me. Anyone who knew me knew it was a miracle, so they had no difficulty understanding. But some people don't actually show any symptoms. So the people around them don't get it when they say they have to drastically change thier diet because they are sick....
  7. The problem is that most people just have never heard of such a thing. Maybe it sounds to them like we made a choice, like being a vegetarian or vegan. I always start with something most people know about. Multiple sclerosis. Everyone has heard of MS but they don't really know what that is either. Any autoimmune disease is basically the same in...

    ARCHIVED Itch

Hi njferrero, Have you check the source of all those lotions and meds you are puting on the skin? Could they possibly contain gluten? One thing we do for itch is take milk baths, (Unless there is a sensitivity to dairy) We buy powdered milk and put 5 or 6 cups into a warm bath (it's cheaper that way!) You can also try witch hazel, you apply it...
  9. Hi debmidge, AHHHHH!! I'm so sorry! Another thought I had when you said he eats corn bread...most corn bread recipies have flour in them along with corn meal...what recipie is he eating. Maybe that's the problem...maybe he's getting glutenend!! And what is the source of the creamed corn? Is it canned? who's the maunfacturer? It's so...
  10. Hi sasquatch, Cute name! Many of your symptoms sound so much like mine. The tingling and numbness is peripheral neuropothy. (nerve damage) I would have it in my hands and feet and my elbows, with shooting pains going up and down my arms and legs. My elbow felt chronically broken and the skin around it felt like it was rug burned. These problems were...
  11. Hi Jenvan Good tip! I have wanted to let people know the same thing. Good information! Wendy

    ARCHIVED How Do I Start?

Hello to both of you, It depends on your insurance. I had to see my primary doctor first and get a refferal. Then I went to see an endocrinologist and an allergist. The endo. did the blood work and the biopsy, the allergist tested me to see if I aslo had any food allergies. Turns out corn and pecans get me. Make sure you don't give up eating...
  13. HI carriecraig, I was wondering if it's possibe the you may still be getting gluten somewhere. It seems strange to have a negative gluten withdrawal reation. Usually people who are celiacs have a wonderful positive response when they give it up. Have you checked your medications or vitamins? Maybe recheck all your products, toothpaste, lotion...
  14. Hi cdford, Thanks! My husband had brought a box home and since I am an ice cream aholic...I really wonted one! I was pleased to find out in my search that costco's ice cream bars (I guess the ones that you get at the snack bar) are also gluten-free. YEAH!!!!! Thanks again, Wendy
  15. HI debmidge, Good news for you. I also freaked out when my allergist told me I was allergic to corn! I said "what in the world can I eat? Everything has corn in it!! He explained to me that it's the corn protien that we are allergic to, that corn oil and corn syrup have no protien. It's things like corn flour, corn meal, or actuall corn that I have...
  16. Does anyone know if Dove chocolate ice dream bars are gluten-free? I have searched all over the internet, inculding their site. I have also checked this site and can't find anything about them. If anyone knows I'll thank you ahead of time. Thanks Wendy
  17. Hi Janelson, I'm so sorry that you are having such a hard time. For me, I was so desperately ill for soooo many years, (progressively getting worse as the years went on) that when I finally discovered that I had celiacs, I balled my eyes out. Not because I was sad that I had the disease, but because of overwhelming relief that I finally discovered what...
  18. Hi Michelle, I too had ridges in my fingernails although not as severe as yours. I also had small white dashes on my fingernails all my life. I was told they were little bruises. Since I am extremely active and always using my hands, I figured that must be right. However, since going gluten-free they have completely dissapeared. For the first time...
  19. Hi debmidge, I have peripheral nueropothy, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome, chronic fatigue and sleeplessness. however all of those problems started to clear up drastically after going gluten-free. I then saw an allergist and found out I am allergic to corn. Taking corn out of my diet made things even better. My PN was tingling and numbness...
  20. Hi Jonesy, Thank you for taking the time to educate fibrohugs on celiac disease. I must say I am not shocked to find out that they seem to not know about the connection. I have suffered FM ect. for about 30 years (since Jr. high school). When I was diagnose a celiac I did my own research and found the connection. Since going gluten-free about one and...
  21. Hi VydorScope, Thyroid problems are common among celiacs. Has your doctor checked your levels? Hypothyroidism is too slow of a thyroid causing weight gain among many other symptoms. Hyperthyroid is too fast. There is also thyroiditis, and Hashimoto's thyroid disease. You can google them to check it out to see if you need to be tested. Wendy

    ARCHIVED Brain Fog

Ianm is right. foods like Potatoes, bananas, peas, carrotts, and white rice are high in starches. The body uses starches as sugar. Maybe you are sensitive to sugar, or to your blood levels spiking up and then crashing. This also can cause brain fog, headaches, ect. Like Ianm said, make sure you eat plenty of green veggies and protein. Take multi vitamins...

    ARCHIVED Rebelling

I was accidentally glutened about 3 weeks ago. I still don't feel completely better. The really sad thing is that just before this happened, I was feeling the best I have felt in 20 years. Almost zero joint and muscle pain, sleeping better, ect. Then I was gluttened and now I'm still paying for it. I've always said since I learned I was a celiac...
  24. Hi everyone, Just wanted to say how refeshing this thread is. I love how all of you have such great attitudes. Life may be a difficult at times but it's as good as we make it.....Life is great!!!! Wendy
  25. Hi shortstuff2309, It's so cool when it all falls into place like that isn't it? I know what you mean. When I figured out that I had celiacs I balled my eyes out. Not because I was sad that I had the disease, but because I was so relieved to finally know what was wrong with me and that I could "cure" it (manage it, and make myself well) simply...
