  1. Yeah, I know we've been around this topic more than once. I'm just feeling irritated so thought I'd put my mini-rant here. I'm in a training program to get certification in my field (chaplain). I attend class one day a week, and do clinical hours the other days. We've been in this class since September. Six of us and the supervisor. The same six. Every...
  2. Are you 100% sure that you've been gluten free? For me the headache is the first sign that I've been glutened. I would suggest taking another look at everything -- your kitchen prep stuff (cutting boards, knives, etc.), toaster, toaster oven, foods you might not have thought of such as regular Rice Crispies which clearly have no wheat in them but are sweetened...
  3. Interesting. Thanks for all the info. And, since I first posted my question I've been back to that grocery store and bought two more boxes of matzoh. My husband said "hey, when are you going to buy some regular for me, since you won't let me touch yours?" (and yes, they are not allowed even to LOOK at my special gluten-free stuff, not if it involves...
  4. I recently stopped by a new-to-me grocery store in my area, an ordinary Giant except that it's HUGE! (a giant Giant, hehe) -- Anyway, I went browsing up and down the aisles and discovered all sorts of wonderful things, including gluten-free matzoh! It's Yehuda brand, imported from Israel. It says on the box "matzo-style cracker" and "Not a replacement for...
  5. About that beer.... you might give Redbridge a try. It's pretty good, especially when it's ice cold and the weather is hot. Before celiac I liked dark beers so it took a few tries for me to like Redbridge. But I really think that we do forget exactly how something tasted after awhile. I'm satisfied with Redbridge now. -- Other alcoholic choices might be a...
  6. One thing that helped me was to make a list of everything that is naturally gluten free. After you start writing you'll realize that most things are gluten free. In fact, everything is naturally gluten free except wheat, barley, and rye (and some of the "cousins" such as spelt). And a few things like oats, which are naturally gluten free but are usually contaminated...
  7. Sigh. I took my dd and a couple of friends to visit a college this weekend. We went into town and they got Subway for dinner, then went to an ice cream place. We went back to the hotel and I ate what I had brought with me -- banana and pb (pb in one of those individual-serving containers, unopened), an apple, cheese stick cut up on crackers (Crunchmaster...

    ARCHIVED Beer?

Yes, I'd say that beer is on any diet you want it to be. Kind of like how chocolate is its own food group. I had pizza and beer for dinner the other night and it was very yummy. We had a movie night here at home. Ordered from Dominos for the others and I made mine from the square Kinnickinnick (spelling? lol) crusts. Sauce, cheese, mushrooms, spinach...
  9. Ah okay, sorry, I misunderstood your first post. I thought you were saying "I've never felt better" as in "I feel great!" lol...That's why I couldn't understand why you'd go back to eating gluten if you felt so good.
  10. But if you "never felt better" after being off gluten then why would you go back on it? Why does it matter if you "officially" have celiac? If you feel better off gluten then clearly you are gluten intolerant. So why go back?
  11. Several months ago my mother mentioned to me that she'd had bad intestinal "issues" for a week or so. Really bad. She's already stick-thin so couldn't afford to lose any more weight, but she couldn't eat anything she said. So I insisted that she try the gluten free diet. She called me a week later to say that she hadn't had problems since she gave up gluten...
  12. Yikes! Sounds horrible. I hope you're feeling better now. Yeah, Rudi's is tricky like that. Udi's at least makes only gluten free stuff (I'm assuming that's the case since I've never seen any gluteny stuff from Udi's.) I was tricked once in the beginning by Newman's "oreo" cookies. In big letters it says "WHEAT FREE". So I picked up a bag of them...
  13. Interesting about the gluten-free wraps. I've googled Subway and on the ingredients list for the wraps it says "bleached enriched white flour". It also says "less than 2% of vital wheat gluten"... So I wonder if your particular Subway made a mistake when they said their wraps were gluten free, thinking that "less than 2%" of gluten means that it is essentially...
  14. Re: the "glucose" and "gluten" confusion... Me calling a local pizza place where we always used to get pizza: Me: Hi, could you tell me if you have a gluten-free pizza? Guy Answering the Phone: Ummm what? Me: Do you offer a gluten-free pizza? Guy: umm... glucose? Me: Thank you. Bye.
  15. I have an update in Dog vs. Pretzel. I mixed up her dinner in her bowl (dry kibble with a couple of tablespoons of wet food), then stuck the pretzel in it like a flag. I put it down in front of her, told her she could eat, then watched out of the corner of my eye. She picked out that pretzel and dropped it on the floor, then continued on with her dinner!...
  16. So yesterday I was eating Glutino's pretzels. Dipping them in Nutella, in fact. My dog was watching me as always, since you know she's totally starved and never gets a thing to eat. So I gave her a pretzel. (these are the thin stick-like ones, not sure if there are other kinds). She took it in her mouth and took it away to her bed to eat. Later...
  17. This may be a silly question....but, have you tried the gluten free bread toasted? And actually, the first question should be "are you eating Udi's bread?" If you're eating anything else stop immediately and go buy Udi's. lol.. But if it is Udi's and you haven't tried it toasted, see if that works. As good as it is I can't eat it just plain, I have to...
  18. For me personally I would never do it. And I haven't. I know that when I eat gluten I feel awful. If I don't eat it I'm fine. My doctor agrees, and based on "somewhat conclusive" blood work (weird, I know) she says "most likely celiac". I don't care if it is, or if it isn't. If it isn't then it's definitely gluten intolerance. Which amounts to the same...
  19. I buy Quaker grits. The ingredients are: "white hominy grits made from corn, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid." That's it. And apparently those ingredients after corn are all B vitamins, except for the iron obviously. Very yummy. With butter. With cheese. With eggs and sausage. yummmmmmmmmmm (and I'm a northern gal...
  20. I went to Israel last year and had NO problems. I did take some of those dining cards printed in Hebrew, although most people speak good English. But they did come in handy one time. But please don't pass on the buffet! They are SO fabulous. omg... I would recommend that right away when you get to the hotel or place you're staying ask to talk to the...
  21. The address says 2307A Mt. Vernon Avenue. I haven't been there yet, and I don't know Alexandria so I don't know about the metro. But I'm sure someone at the bakery could tell you if you called. Well worth the trip, since as far as I know there isn't an entirely gluten free bakery around here. Not within easy reach of me anyway.
  22. All Northern Virginia folks run, do not walk, to this new bakery! It's in the Del Ray area of Alexandria. -- While I was at church this morning my dh drove there and came home with the most fabulous things! bread! and cupcakes! and other chocolaty things. omg. That's all I have to say. :)
  23. My mother has gone gluten free with excellent results. (darn doctors, ) -- Anyway, last night she and my dad had one of those roasted chickens from Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh). She had a return of symptoms overnight, which have totally disappeared since she went gluten free. Unfortunately she didn't think of the chicken until I mentioned it, and my...
  24. Oh well... since I have 2-3 cups of brewed coffee a day and never, ever have gluten symptoms from it I'm going with the thought that there's no gluten in my coffee.
  25. Well, I'm not a doctor, but I would say that probably you're getting the pains from the coffee itself -- i.e., the caffeine, or the acid, or whatever else is in coffee. Not from gluten, which is not in coffee. Lots of people who have "stomach trouble" (as the doctors like to call any number of things) cannot drink coffee. My entirely unmedical opinion...
