  1. Bev, thanks for your post. It was cathartic for me to read it, ad the last paragraph about likening it to a miscarriage brought mega tears to my eyes. Having lived through that as well, I can see the link. I miss the joy in my daughter's eyes, I never knew this would be SO disruptive to her, emotionally, but where she is especially sensitive and introspective...
  2. I'm thinking there aren't too many kids out there, save for the siblings who were tested once their brother/sister was diagnosed, who were diagnosed with celiac disease but were "silent celiacs." I wondered if there were any other moms/dads on the board here whose kids did not have stomach/bowel issues, headaches, etc. as my 6 yr old did not. She is still...
  3. Hi Mizzo, It could have been my misunderstanding; it was a week post-diagnosis when I took the class and my head was spinning from all of the info. She may have said to read Soy sauce labels carefully and I heard otherwise. I do think the class was extremely helpful. Didn't realize you are in the Boston area too.
  4. Mizzo and everyone who wrote me: THANK YOU! Can you let me know which "guide" you are referring to? Need to pick up one for home as well.
  5. Thank you all for clearing it up...so it has nothing to do with the "soy" per se, just the wheat flour that was added to Soy sauce....GOT IT! Thanks
  6. At an intro to "celiac disease: 101' class that my husband I took at Children's Hospital in Boston a couple of mos. ago, one of the nutritionists explained that celiacs have to avoid soy sauce as it contains gluten. I'm often unnerved when reading ingredients and find soybeans or soybean oil or some other term that incorporates soy into it. I understand...
  7. Hi everyone My 6 yr old, Grace, with the help of a nutritionist, has been expanding her diet since being diagnosed in early June. For most of her little life, she ate pasta and chicken tenders...something nearly impossible to come by, gluten free, outside of the home. I'd like to get to the point where she can eat out, because she's willing to try grilled...
  8. Hi there, Jello pudding is gluten free, I believe the Kraft is also; when I was looking at pudding cups for my daughter whose camp was serving it as a snack, I was surprised that most all of them, even the store's generic brand, did not have any gluten in them. I've also yet to find a popsicle with any wheat flour or malt or any other gluten containing...
  9. Hi JessAnn, My recommendation would be to pick up a copy of the gluten free national restaurant guides (not sure what title is, but I've seen them online, so you can google it.) If you have an iphone or droid or itouch, etc. those all have gluten free applications that you can download and will give you a list of restaurants that offer gluten free menus...
  10. Hi there, I'm a parent of a celiac child, and I haven't experienced pregnancy w/celiac myself, but I did want to say that I've read a lot of posts from other women who experienced sometimes multiple miscarriages and infertility when their celiac disease was undiagnosed and untreated. They then went on to have healthy babies after going gluten free. I...
  11. I was wondering if any members from New England know if the Patriots Movie Cinemas popcorn is gluten-free? I've googled and tried to find out, but it isn't listed online as many of the major movie theater chain's popcorns are. Employees at the cinema did not know, so I guess I'll have to contact management to find out, unless anyone from around here has...
  12. Hi there I know there is a lot of talk about finding a "good" GI doctor, but my experience has been wonderful with our Children's Hospital (in Boston). You must live somewhere in driving distance to a Children's hospital in your region; my recommendation would be to start there where the GIs are very familiar with diagnosing and treating celiac. Our...
  13. Hi Pink Lady I learned that my 6 yr old has celiac just 2 mos. ago. I wish I knew the statistics back then, after her bloodwork returned positive. (She had no symptoms, long story, the blood test was accidentally ordered). I found out AFTER the biopsy that with positive antibody blood tests, only 3% of the endoscopy biopsies are negative for celiac. ...
  14. They sound delicious; I'm going to add them in too! Yes, the brownies are definitely great. Fudgy and not at all tasting like they're missing anything. Thanks for the tip.
  15. PS -- I forgot: I added another tsp of vanilla and about 1 TBSP of vegetable oil to the cookie mix as I'd be using it for cookie bars. They came out absolutely perfect that way. - Emily
  16. The other night I had family coming for dinner and was running behind. I needed a dessert that my gluten-free daughter could eat, so I made the Betty Crocker choc. chip mix, added in some peanut butter chips, greased an 8x8 pan and poured the mix in as an experiment to make cookie bars. I baked it at 350 for a half hour and then let them cool. Cut them into...
  17. Until you have some time under your belt with gluten free baking (requires some trial and error becz of the flours involved) I would recommend the Betty Crocker gluten free cake mixes, comes in both yellow and chocolate. The only thing I wish I knew before I bought it at the store was that it only makes an 8x8 pan size, so you'll need two if you're making...
  18. Hi Paula, If the biopsy is positive for celiac, you'll have a lot of great support and resources here. Everyone has been so incredibly helpful to me in the past 2 mos after my daughter's diagnosis. Wishing you all the best. Emily
  19. Stephanie, I think they're talking about when ordering in a restaurant or explaining to a stranger in a similar circumstance. Its simpler to say allergy than explain the ins and outs of celiac disease, particularly when servers don't know what you're talking about and don't have the time to be educated. I find myself shortcutting as well when we're out to...
  20. Hi karen! I'd love that gluten free cobbler recipe with the Betty Crocker mix, if you dont mind sending it! Thanks, Emily
  21. And you were right! They told me at the market tonight that the slicers are cleaned every night. If I call my order in at night, they'll prepare ours first thing in the morning before any other orders are done. Thank you so much for giving me that great tip, my little girl will be so happy to continue eating her newfound fave food!
  22. We live in Massachusetts...just wondering where the bakery was? One just opened in Randolph, MA called "AllCanEat" that also offers a gluten free snack bar - they have pizza, sandwiches, breakfast, etc. Is this the same place, or are you out of state?
  23. Hi there, My 6 yr old was diagnosed a little under 2 months ago, and had the same emotional reaction. Its normal. We've lined up someone for her to talk with who has counseled celiac kids before so that she can find some healthy ways to adjust to this tremendous lifestyle change. And she's getting a lot better, emotionally, 2 mos. into this than in the...
  24. Wow -- what a great idea! Never thought of that. So I'll have to find out when the slicers are cleaned and ask them to prepare the order right afterwards. Thank you so much. I'll ask for the deli mgrs at both markets where I shop and see if one of them is willing to work with us. Appreciate the suggestion more than you know, Emily
