ARCHIVED When Teachers Don't Understand Celiac Kids
Grace'smom replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Bev I think you and I have communicated before. Thanks for your post. The kindness of the teacher and the other parents in your classroom brought mega tears to my eyes. Its good to hear there are such good hearted and understanding adults out there. I am praying that this coming school year will be different. I am speaking with the principal of the... -

So much good advice and wisdom in your words...thank you for sharing your experiences with me. I really love the idea of the "one up" whenever an unexpected event happened that had your child feeling left out. I will tell Grace about that one. Tonight we made plans to go to the zoo this week, to lift her spirits after a rough few days. Little things like... -
ARCHIVED Grieving Process For Just Diagnosed Kids
Grace'smom replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you, Bev. We found out she had celiac quite by accident. During a thyroid screening (she's hypo thyroid) a staff member in the doctor's office was copying over the dr's lab orders onto a new lab form, and "accidentally" filled out the bubble for a celiac screening. Can you believe it? Her endocrinologist was stunned when he wound up with positive... -

Thank you for such a warm and creative post. That information sure helps, and I loved the story at the end about him eating the hamburger buns!!! I found my daughter hiding in the pantry last week, trying to get the lid off of a jar of animal crackers. Makes me feel better to know I'm not alone and that this is all normal. Thank you! Emily -

Hello there friends I am so sad tonight. It has been an emotionally draining few weeks. My 6 year old, Grace, was diagnosed with Celiac disease a little over two weeks ago. It has been a rollercoaster for all of us, much like it was for all of you in the early days, I'm sure. The hardest part for me is the sadness I am witnessing each time we have attended... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Rice Krispie Treats
Grace'smom replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi there, Just wanted to let you know that Children's Hospital Boston told us last week to stay away from Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles as tests showed significant cross contamination. Post Cereals makes gluten containing cereals and that is why they refuse to label those 2 cereals gluten free, because of the cross contamination factor. A child at Children... -
I have some confusion over M&Ms. M&Ms candy contains Dextrim, but according to a post I read online, the writer, who had celiac disease, contacted M&M/Mars and was told the candy was gluten free as the Dextrim is not gluten containing. I'm curious, then, why in the bestselling book Raising Your Celiac Child by Donna Korn, she lists hundreds...

ARCHIVED Grieving Process For Just Diagnosed Kids

Wow, those are great suggestions. Thank you so much, you've given me a lot to think about here. She has done some shopping with me, but this summer with school out, I should have her come along every time so she is more involved. I also like your ideas on what to bring to get togethers. Didn't think of that one! Going compltely gluten free would be very... -

Thank you so much. All of this helps, and you certainly were not rambling. I'm starving for information and input from other parents, so so glad I found all of you on this site. I'm encouraged by the special treats your mom made and that inspires me to do special things for her so she'll feel loved, too. Thank you again. Emily -

ARCHIVED Grieving Process For Just Diagnosed Kids

What a caring post. Thank you so much, Nancy. I hadn't factored in the "guilt" part, and w/the bleach example you make perfect sense. I think I will give this a few more weeks and if these meltdowns continue to plague her, we will make an appointment with someone at Children's. I'm probably expecting too much normalcy from her with only 2 wks into this... -
ARCHIVED Grieving Process For Just Diagnosed Kids
Grace'smom replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Peter, The book is called Eating Gluten Free with Emily, A Story for Children with Celiac Disease by Bonnie J. Kruszka. It is a fictional story about a little girl who just got diagnosed with Celiac disease, and covers the basics about the illness; and how among other things that make her special, this is a part of who she is. I'd say it is good for... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Rice Krispie Treats
Grace'smom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi there, If anyone read my post about the grief my newly diagnosed 6-yr-old child was experiencing, today's meltdown was over her wanting a traditional Rice Krispies treat snack-pack. My husband went to the store to buy the ingredients for gluten-free Rice Krispie treats and we googled the recipes online. While Kraft foods maintains that their Marshmallow... -
ARCHIVED Grieving Process For Just Diagnosed Kids
Grace'smom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi everyone I am reaching out looking for support from moms and dads of kids with celiac who struggled emotionally. My 6 yr old daughter, Grace, was diagnosed two weeks ago. I expected this to be a difficult transition, but I wasn't prepared for the grieving she is experiencing over the radical diet change. Every few days, she gets mentally "stuck"... -
Cap'n Crunch Gluten Free?
Grace'smom replied to KristenPK's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Janet My husband and I took a course on Celiac disease for our 6 yr old daughter this past week at Children's Hospital in Boston. They advised us to stay away from Fruity and cocoa Pebbles as the hospital did a study on two celiac siblings who were eating these cereals. One of them had a high gluten count in her blood work and they traced it to... -
Cap'n Crunch Gluten Free?
Grace'smom replied to KristenPK's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The ingredient "oat flour" always suggests the presence of gluten, according to Children's Hospital Boston. We just took a celiac nutrition class there this week and that was the advice we were given. They also said to be wary of seemingly gluten free cereals that are not labeled gluten free; as there is evidence of cross contamination in the factory. This... -
ARCHIVED Bread Please!
Grace'smom replied to jenlex's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Jen, By far the best we've had is Udi's... it comes in either white or multi grain. My 6 year old is so picky, and she absolutely loves it.. it tastes exactly like traditional white or multi grain bread and absolutely doesn't fall apart. The grocer told me to keep it in the freezer; so every morning I microwave 2 slices for 20 seconds to defrost it,... -
ARCHIVED New To All This
Grace'smom replied to Lilymato1sonwithCD's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Lili, I feel your pain. That is a huge diagnosis to contend with. I think many of the moms on this page are only dealing w/celiac; or perhaps celiac and nut/dairy/egg allergies. I would suggest calling your area Children's hospital and making an appointment ASAP with a nutritionist. I did this myself this past week and it changed my life. You'll need a... -
ARCHIVED How To Handle Playdough In The Classroom?
Grace'smom replied to concernedmamma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ok...this is surely a dumb question, but why the major concern over playdough if its not ingested? My daughter was recently diagnosed with celiac, but I've allowed her to use playdough, so long as she washes her hands well afterwards, and certainly before eating. Can anyone answer this for me? Thank you, Emily -
Hi everyone I'm less than a week into my 6 yo daughter's celiac diagnosis, so you may see several posts from me in coming days. I wondered if anyone could clear up some online contradictions I've seen regarding gluten-free cereal. Aside from Envirokids, and other clearly labeled gluten-free cereals, are there any mainstream cereals that are gluten-free...

ARCHIVED Child Just Diagnosed
Grace'smom replied to Grace'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Great advice, thank you! Especially excited about the pancake recommendation...my husband makes them all the time for our 5 kids. I was sad thinking it may be hard to find a "good" gluten free brand. So grateful, Emily -

ARCHIVED Bread Please!
Grace'smom replied to jenlex's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Jen My child was just diagnosed yesterday. A good friend who is a college student called me last night and suggested Udi's bread, either the white or the multi grain. She's had celiac for several years and struggled with finding good bread. She discovered Udi's last week and said it is SO GOOD that she started to cry when she ate it. It does not...
