  1. Thanks Karen! Will try the Hormel. And I loved the pb comment at the end! You're right - it is a great food, I was just happy to add something new to the mix. Good to hear he's done so well on it though!!
  2. Hey there everyone So I am THRILLED that my 6 yr old has pretty much lost the taste for gluten, and is now trying new foods. Her lunch for years never went beyond a peanut butter and jelly. For the past two weeks, she's been thrilled to discover that she likes sliced turkey. I did my homework and found that Sarah Lee turkey, our local supermarket's home...
  3. WHOOPS! I meant to say, that Children's hospital puts out a great DVD on Celiac Disease that can be ordered online.
  4. Hi Jennifer My daughter was diagnosed almost 2 months ago, so I know exactly how you're feeling. The first few wks I felt completely overwhelmed. Children's hospital in Boston puts out a great celiac disease on celiac disease in children that can be ordered online; they also did a "class" for newly diagnosed kids/parents of the kids that taught me all...
  5. Thank you. We had a wonderful meeting with the principal, who bent over backwards to help make next year's transition into first grade SO much better than I'd even hoped. I was able to request the teacher I wanted for her, scheduled a meeting with her before school starts, plan out a meeting with the guidance counselor, school nurse and even the town's director...
  6. Thanks all...I will try and order the Domata online. I contacted King Arthur flour today regarding their new gluten free mix, but they told me there is not a "list" available yet for where it can be bought, at any supermarkets, and to ask my local food store if they'll consider carrying it. Odd. Maybe they're still looking into the demand to see how many...
  7. Thank you everyone! Great input!
  8. Thanks for those suggestions...does this mean I have to add "xantham gum" - I know I'm spelling it wrong - to ANY of these off the shelf flour mixes? Saw that on one of the first posts. Is that to keep it from crumbling apart, and do any of you know if its already added into any of these mixes? Emily
  9. Hi there I know a lot you are great bakers and cooks, and probably create your own gluten free flour mixes from scratch. I have 5 young kids, and can't seem to find that kind of time and space to make a really great flour mix. Can anyone recommend a pre mixed gluten free flour off the shelf? I know Bob's Red Mill makes one; Quinoa is another...what is...
  10. Thanks. I hadn't factored in the withdrawals part... could be that is it too. Since we've met w/the Chidrens social worker she's been so much better. Writing/drawing in her journal. Another big step was that while we initially had created a gluten free shelf in the pantry, the counselor and I talked about it and I told her we were moving all of her food...
  11. Hi there, I don't know if this would work for her snack project or not, but I did find out this week that Swedish Fish are gluten free, and to me, they're pretty darn close to licorice! (At least, taste and texture-wise...maybe not project wise!) My little girl was thrilled to discover that, as she used to love licorice and doesn't like many candies. ...
  12. Thanks for your reply. I thought over your questions, and I guess my answer would be that where all of this behavior has only happened post-diagnosis, I probably can't blame other food allergies. She has always been an extremely calm and gentle and happy child. Of my 5 kids, the "easiest" to parent because of her good naturedness. I think its a part of...
  13. There is an order of nuns in the midwest that you can order church approved gluten free hosts from. Google "gluten free communion wafers for Catholics" and you'll get the link to order them. I would not recommend what many priests direct people w/celiac to do, which is to refrain from the Eucharist and partake only in the precious blood/wine. By sipping...
  14. Oh honey, I completely understand your grief over this. My daughter was diagnosed 6 wks ago and while she won't make her first communion until next year, I cried over the same issue. We are Catholic, so the traditions are a little different. However, I have two thoughts: the first is to google "gluten free communion wafers" and you'll get a variety of...
  15. Ok... sorry for being a double poster today but as a new mom to the world of celiac, I could really use some encouragement tonight! About a month ago I wrote about the grieving process for my newly diagnosed 6 yr old little girl, Grace. I am so sad that my gentle hearted, happy, happy, happy little girl who is so warmly received by others because of her...
  16. Wow... I feel SO much better after reading your posts! I was so afraid that I was missing a step here. So many new things to learn with this diet. So appreciative of all of the suggestions and input. Thank you, thank you!
  17. Thank you...yes, I am aware of the other buzz words; just using the food starch - wheat as an example. Most of the foods she's eating aren't derivatives of oats, rye or barley (Save for the malt extract in Rice Krispies, etc. She sure misses those.) Thanks for the input.
  18. Hi everyone Where I'm only about 5-6 wks into the gluten free diet for my 6 yr old, I still have a lot of questions regarding what's okay to eat. Children's Hospital gave us a great handbook for label reading. The one question I am stuck on, however, is that if a product does not contain gluten on the label, are you automatically ok to give it a green...
  19. My daughter did not have any physical symptoms, and still had - and I quote - "full blown celiac disease", per the GI following an endoscopy. We learned by an 'accidentally' ordered blood panel that her levels were indicative of celiac. They followed her via bloodwork for 10 mos. and then did the scope in May. I just wanted to share that, yes, the tummy...
  20. That is true...but a blood panel would indicate if there were a likelihood of celiac disease; a good GI doctor would know if the results warranted an endoscopy to be sure. And that is 100% accurate. Definitely definitely worth going through the tests to know for sure.
  21. Have you had the celiac blood panels done for any of you yet? That would be your clear indicator if the gluten is the primary cause of these symptoms. Good luck to all of you...
  22. Thank you everyone for those great suggestions. I'm going to post a notice at the local health food store w/their permission, and put my email on it if another mom wants to meet. I'll keep asking around too. She could really use a friend to identify with. Many thanks. Emily
  23. Hi Stephanie. I feel for you: that is a long list. My child has celiac so its gluten free only for her, but so far the biggest help for us was meeting with a nutritionist. Where you have so many specific allergies, it would be worthwhile to find one who works with children and allergies (your local children's hospital GI dept. will have a good nutritionist...
  24. Hi everyone This may seem like a strange request, but we live on the South Shore of Massachusetts, and I'm trying to find other celiac kids for my recently diagnosed 6 year old daughter, Grace, to meet. The other day she told me that she doesn't like the idea of feeling "different" from everyone else, and that she is sad that she is the only one she knows...
  25. You're right. Most people have NO idea how far reaching the diet extends. I certainly didn't, until now. The food starch w/flour bit is the killer...its hidden in so many foods that one would never expect; if they knew the extent of our label reading it would boggle their minds. Thank you for your kind words at the end of your post. Seems like all of...
