  1. I ate artificial bacon bits a couple of weeks back (not knowing that they are wheat based) and reacted within the hour of ingestion... actually I felt sick while I was eating the salad, but I was so hungry that I just ignored all the warnings signs... is it normal to react that fast? I hadn't been gluten free for very long - gluten reduced for a couple of...
  2. Okay, I've posted a couple of times before on these boards, but this time, I must apologize in advance if this post is kind of all over the place and frantic sounding... I'm really worried and trying not to freak so I'd really appreciate input that people have or advice... I'm 26 years old and do not have a formal diagnosis of celiac. I however, have...
  3. Thank you for clarifying - I missed the 'returning' bit simply b/c I've only (knock on wood) had one bout of the neuropathies and ataxia. They shouldn't recur if you stay gluten free... correct? Or has the damage that causes them to recur been done by the time they happen once causing them to continually recur even if you stay gluten-free?
  4. I think that I've had it since my grade nine year in high school (2009) - at least in terms of the GI symptoms. It was never D - always C, but my GI tract was basically in constant pain, bloated, gassy etc. I think part of me knew that what I was experiencing wasn't normal, but as I had (still have) anorexia, no one listened to me when I initially tried to...
  5. Hm. Soy intolerance is actually a really good and logical idea that I had not yet considered - it would totally make sense from a hormonal perspective. I've heard people talk about testing for food intolerances, but I"m not very familiar with it. Is it just done on the basis of an elimination diet, and then reintroducing foods to see what one reacts to, or...
  6. I'm on the birth control pill and have been since 2005. Actually, there was a one year period during that time (in 2008-2009) when I was off the pill completely. I found that being on or off the pill made no difference for my GI symptoms. I have alot of the neuro symptoms - I've had depression since high school (so around 1999ish when I was in grade 9), which...
  7. Possibly a naive question - I know that almost all soy sauce has gluten in it, and that almost all salad dressings having soy in them - but does the soy listed in salad dressings have gluten in it as well? I'm not sure what exactly the difference b/w soy in salad dressing vs soy sauce is...
  8. Hi, I'm sorry to re-post when there are a couple of other posts on this, but I"m relatively new at this gluten-free stuff and still feeling a bit overwhelmed... One of my biggest complaints is that I have horrific night sweats - I used to wake up from them in the middle of the night, absolutely drenched to wring out my pjs and put a dry pair on (sleeping...
  9. I was a vegetarian, very strict about it too until I had an anorexic relapse this past fall. I re-introduced fish into my diet in January b/c I deemed the protein and essential fatty acids I would reap from it worth my mental discomfort caused by eating it. I've been gluten free for about 5 days now, and in that time I have re-incorporated chicken into my...
  10. Definitely not too weird at all to say!!! I completely understand! Quite honestly, if I've found a solution to making all these symptoms better, well as weird as it sounds, I'll be ecstatic!!! (I'm reserving judgment until I've been completely gluten-free for at least a month, although I do feel better already, so it's a good sign.) So I'm really glad that...
  11. My fiance and one of my closest friends thankfully. They were actually the ones who pushed me to give up on the challenge.
  12. I know that you can eat fish and chicken on a paleo diet - what I meant was that fish and chicken/ turkey are the only types of meat that I can stand eating - I hate (always have) the taste of beef and pork - and things like game meat make me cringe a bit b/c I can't help but think of cute bunnies and deer. lol. I was a complete and strict vegetarian up until...
  13. Thanks for the advice! I wasn't completely gluten-free before the challenge, but I was significantly gluten-reduced - which I didn't do at all with celiac in mind - I was in the process of trying to eliminate processed foods b/c I was interested in trying a paleo diet (difficult for someone whom only likes chicken and fish). I'm starting to feel better now...
  14. I don't know about cleanses, but what I do know is that NO ONE, whether they have celiac or not, should take diet pills. Diet pills are dangerous and often under-tested before release to the public. You want to teach your system how to function with food and metabolize normally, and diet pills I can tell you are most definitely NOT the way to go about doing...
  15. Hi, I've tried searching the forum about this, and doing generic google searches, but I'm not really having much success. I was wondering... I know that quite a few people report fevers when eating gluten - I"m assuming that the fevers are systemic. I have been gluten-free for 24 hours (to the best of my knowledge), having been on a gluten-challenge...
  16. Not to ask a stupid or naive question, but how long did it take for your (or your daughter's) stomache to stop burning once you went gluten free?
  17. Just as an update, I've given up on the gluten challenge. I simply couldn't handle it. I ate my last bowl of cereal this morning and then went and got blood collected to do the serological screen. I know it will likely be negative, in my opinion likely falsely negative based on how eating gluten made me feel and think (all I could think about was death and...
  18. Hi, I apologize in advance if this has been posted by others prior to this... I'm very open to people's feedback though and would be very appreciative of it as I'm very new to all of this. My doctor ordered a celiac screen for me last Friday. I had not been eating a gluten-free diet, but it was gluten reduced (reduced from about May-present) - some...
  19. Okay, sorry for this, but is what I"m feeling right now a common reaction to a gluten challenge? Nausea, GI disturbances, headache, fever, fatigue, complete loss of the desire to eat... (I realize for me that may be more complicated than for someone else, but dance means the world to me, and I can't even force myself to eat adequately for that right now...
  20. I definitely understand your point when you say that a gluten challenge isn't necessarily a good idea. What I think would be devastating would be to do the challenge full out, feel sick for a month, and then still get negative results. And possibly even more troublesome in my case, after the massive re-introduction of gluten this past weekend I've been left...
  21. How much gluten were people consuming in the days/ weeks/ months prior to being tested though? Would eating crackers on a regular basis, and bread intermittently be enough to show a positive result?
  22. Firstly, thank you for those links Rice Guy. I only ever first heard of celiacs in a very offhand way from a friend who's brother and mother have it last summer, so it was definitely the furthest thing from my mind when I went about searching for what could be causing my GI symptoms. I really appreciate everyone's responses and feedback. Really really...
  23. I definitely do have an eating disorder - definitely anorexic, hands down no question about it. My fiance totally thinks that I'm imagining the association b/w myself and gluten, and he doesn't see how all my neurological problems can be related to celiac (he's only familiar with the classic presentation of it) - and I don't discuss GI related issues...
  24. Hi, I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but I'm curious for feedback. I'm a 26 year old female with a history of anorexia nervosa. There is no celiacs within my family that I know of/ has been tested for, although my mother (biological) has severe rheumatoid arthritis. I however don't talk to my family, so if something was awry I wouldn't know....
