  1. I find it difficult when I have to assure people that it's not that bad. Yesterday, some people asked me what else I can't have and they looked like they were upset about it and couldn't imagine having to live that way. My avoidance list is long and it's hard enough for me to deal with it, without having to tell others it's not so bad. Now that I think about...
  2. Please vent away. You're not the only one feeling left out with all the food around at work. I'm still pretty new to this new lifestyle, too. It's been a huge adjustment for me. However, when I have a really good day and my back's not hurting and my anxiety and depression are gone, I feel like I'm singing inside. There's definitely a social price to pay...
  3. I voted relatively hard, but I think it's also because of all the other foods I have to avoid: dairy, all grains, beef, pork, eggs, garlic. So many of the gluten free non-grain prepared foods have garlic or eggs in them. I finally found a soup stock that I can use, so that's really helped. I'm hoping that with time I'll be able to start eating some rice again...
  4. Same here. I'd say about 90% of the time, I get the "C". It's like my colon just seizes up and it's very uncomfortable. Probiotics usually work well and sometimes I take a small amount of psyllium to get things moving along. It can take several days to get things back to normal, though. Hope you're feeling better by now.
  5. I live in Victoria, if that helps. PM me if you'd like to know more about the local support groups, etc.
  6. This sounds like great advice; thanks for the information. I've been really struggling this week, too, since it's my first holiday season where I am totally gluten free. It helps to know that I'm not the only one feeling a bit frustrated.
  7. Here's another vote for staying away from the liquid ones that are made with alcohol. I had a definite gluten reaction to one brand. It didn't occur to me at the time that the alcohol could be made from grains and I won't make that mistake again!
  8. Wow, I can really relate to the comments on this thread. I think the hardest issue were so-called friends who called me "lazy" or "boring" because, yet again, I did not feel well after eating and was not up for various activities. My biggest loss were the miscarriages and infertility. We did adopt two kids. Life probably would have been easier with kids...
  9. Dairy causes those symptoms for me. It might be the casein in dairy, though I'm not sure. The sore knees usually last a couple of days. The C and the fatigue can last longer. Best wishes and I hope you find the cause.
  10. Sadie, if you're still around, I've seen Udi's at Pepper's in Cadboro Bay and at Planet Organic at Quadra and Mackenzie.
  11. I'd always wondered why I had such extreme anxiety and general emotional stability issues (I always seemed to be on the edge of the next depressive episode, wavering back and forth). Lately, I've caught myself thinking "life can really be this good?". I had no idea what it was like to feel "normal". I'm still trying to figure out all of my triggers...
  12. Thanks very much for the input. It sounds like I'm not the only one who gets different symptoms. It has been a couple of months since I became completely gluten free, so I wonder if my villi are healing and maybe that's why my reactions are different. The painful gassy reaction is something that I had years ago (although I didn't know that gluten was the...
  13. The first time that I was accidentally glutened, I had my usual reaction of anxiety, joint pain and severe C. Yesterday, I think I might have been accidentally glutened, but my reaction was a bit of anxiety and painful gas with no C or joint pain at all. I'm wondering if anyone experiences very different reactions and what they think can cause them...
  14. I have a lot of trouble with severe C at times. One thing that seems to help is a good quality probiotic from the health food store. It's best to have a dairy free one, if possible. Best wishes on finding a solution. It can be a miserable thing to deal with.
  15. Thanks for this post!! I couldn't figure out why I felt so tired after I ate lunch today. I'm pretty sure that there was no danger of cc and I didn't feel my stomach cramp (the usual sign that I've been glutened). It must have been from the accidental glutening that I had 4 days ago. My extreme C is finally gone today, but maybe it takes a few more days...
  16. I have fairly mild symptoms that manifest mostly as anxiety, depression and C. Even though my blood test came back negative, I took the advice of the person I spoke to at the local celiac support group and went from gluten light to gluten free a few weeks ago. It was the best decision I ever made. I had no idea what it felt like to not have anxiety all...
  17. Thanks, I needed to hear that. I've been strictly gluten free for just over a month (I was gluten light before that) and I kept hearing that many people have quick recoveries. Mine has been up and down and I wasn't sure what was happening. It's inspiring to hear that it can keep getting better over a long period of time.
