  1. And sorry to hijack your thread, Melstar, but yes, if you were gluten free for three and a half months, chances are pretty strong that your endoscopy would be negative. My GI doc didn't let me go gluten-free for one week because she didn't want a false negative. If you want a more accurate test for Celiac, you'll have to challenge gluten, eating a good...
  2. When did doctors collectively decide that most of their patients' symptoms were in their heads or psychologically motivated? I spent months going to different doctors this year who kept insisting my problems were due to stress, anxiety, depression, etc. until one of them finally did a Celiac test. Guess what? It wasn't in my head and I've read the same thing...
  3. Eating pizza that came out of a kitchen where flour is just flung about willy nilly? No, thanks, but good luck. Homemade pizza = much healthier and much yummier. No fear of cross contamination or greasy fingers.
  4. They're not trying to scare you. Celiac Disease can lead to intestinal and stomach cancer if left untreated and the only way to treat it is to just follow the diet. It isn't easy for any of us, believe me. But now that you're 17, you're going to have to start taking responsibility for it. There's no easy way out of this one: you get the diagnosis and you...
  5. Do you have a crock pot or a slow cooker? My mom gave me a crock pot right after I was diagnosed and I'm kind of in love with the little thing. I throw in veggies, potatoes, rice, chicken, whatever I have or is on sale and just let it all stew together. When it's time to eat, I warm it up in the microwave. Sometimes add a little bacon for fun or flaxseed...
  6. I'm sorry the idea of the specimen sitting in a UPS drop box all day kind of made me laugh. Just like it made me laugh when my specimen (different lab) came with $100 insurance on it. Enterolab's website says you should receive instructions on how to mail it back. Did you get anything like that with the mailer they sent you?
  7. This made me laugh and cry a little bit...in one sitting.
  8. Absolutely. When I first started showing symptoms a few years before I was diagnosed, I was sleeping round the clock. As my symptoms got bad in the last year or so before diagnosis, I turned into an insomniac. My GI symptoms were episodic, too, alternating between D and C before finally settling on C (awesome!). Celiac is a deeply irrational disorder.
  9. Yup. I'm 27 and I hang all over my mom now when I see her.
  10. I was told it could take months before I felt normal and healthy again too. I try to rejoice in the small changes: my skin is clearer and I'm finally shedding weight and looking skinny again. Look for the little things and just be glad you're on the right path.
  11. This. I think every doctor should give their copy of this book after their diagnosis. Very concise, easy to read, and eye-opening.
  12. Oh, you could definitely be on the right track with the anxiety. One of my worst, most detrimental symptoms was anxiety. It didn't disappear overnight after being diagnosed (but then, I'm 27 years old) but it has started to taper off. My panic and anxiety attacks are gone. I'm definitely less irritable. I still worry sometimes but I've been told by the incredibly...
  13. Thanks for all the responses; I appreciate the input. I ended up asking my physician her thoughts on this when my GI doctor sent me for a pneumonia vaccine (Did anyone else need this after their diagnosis?) and she encouraged me to send a letter but to wait a couple months until I've had a little more time to heal and sort myself out. I definitely understand...
  14. Good lord, you're a warrior. I dealt with about 8 months of Celiac symptoms and completely crumbled into a weepy puddle of helplessness. You like reading? I read Stephen Wangen's Healthier Without Wheat right after I was diagnosed and really liked it. It was eye opening, to say the least. And Shauna Ahern's Gluten-Free Girl is cute, inspiring book about...
  15. It did for me and I still sometimes feel the effects of it since I've only been gluten-free for almost a month. I would get angry and lash out at people around me knowing full well it was ridiculous. I was angry, anxious, and irritated. I still get little bouts of it but it's less and less frequent.
  16. Macaroni and cheese. You know the kind in the cardboard box with the unnaturally day-glo orange cheese powder in it? This was my favorite as a kid and my comfort food as an adult. I'm being super careful with dairy and cheese while I heal but, man, do I miss this. I actually moaned a little when I walked by it at the grocery store the other day, such is my...

    ARCHIVED Itching

You need to find a new doctor because your dermatologist is suffering under antiquated ideas about Celiac. Not all Celiacs have weight loss and diarrhea. I was the exact opposite
  18. Think of your immune system like an army. If most of your troops are off at the front lines fighting gluten, there are few platoons remaining to fight your virus
  19. Also? Three Musketeers. Nom.
  20. Since this forum has been an invaluable resource for me since being diagnosed, I thought I'd throw a moral dilemma out there with which I've been struggling since my diagnosis. I was adopted as an infant (27 years old now). I have amazing, wonderful parents and have never really had an inclination to seek out my birth parents. I know my birth mother lives...
  21. That's awful but it sounds like this runs a lot deeper than whether or not you're eating gluten-free. Counseling, maybe? Because the way he's treating you? Not cool. I was nervous that some of the special foods I need to eat
  22. Have you tried Googling it? It's a little tougher since a couple of those ingredients are actually German. If you're a German speaker, I found this page which might help: Open Original Shared Link I'm pretty sure it says everything on that list is gluten-free. Whenever I'm not sure, I Google the name of the product with "gluten" after it.
  23. For what it's worth, my gastroenterologist said it could take a few months to see serious results. But I get how hard it is to be patient. It took months to figure out what's wrong with me; I want to be healthy Now.
  24. Before insurance, my blood tests were a couple hundred but it depends which tests your doctor does. The endoscopy was just over six hundred. I didn't have a colonoscopy since that can't diagnose Celiac. Luckily my insurance covered everything because my doctor was careful to code everything as being medically necessary. Be honest with your doctor about the...
  25. I checked my hair products for gluten...but really? I've been washing my own (hip-length) hair since I was seven years old and have never gotten shampoo in my mouth. I think I'd be more concerned with it getting in my eyes. I did find, however, that using a conditioner with hydrolyzed wheat protein made me itch. I was fine once I stopped using it but...
