  1. Dear KVOGT, your unfortunate reaction to some of the remarks made here fully illustrates why I was somewhat apprehensive about weighing in on this sensitive subject. I am responding inasmuch as I am among those who you singled out with some disdain, as a former Catholic. Please know that I was very careful to choose words that expressed my point without...
  2. O.K., I enter this discussion with a bit of trepidation, but speaking as one who was brought up in the Catholic church and left it many years ago (and to be fair, Christianity altogether) (please, no prayers for my soul), here is something that I thought of as regards this sad situation. As I recall, in the protestant religions, the wafer is viewed as SYMBOLIC...
  3. Hi Brandi. You asked if any of us need to avoid dairy products too, and I'm in that group, although I must stay away from them not because of lactose intolerance, but because I am allergic to casein. Perhaps you already know this, but lactose intolerance is an inablility to digest the sugar, lactose, because the person lacks the enzymes that would perform...
  4. Thanks celiac3270, for posting that letter. Boy, you sure do your homework! Actually, I had wondered about Suave's position on gluten. I had seen an ambiguous listing somewhere, as to whether or not Celiacs could safely use their products which left me uncertain, so I have avoided them. Given what they wrote, do you personally feel comfortable using their...
  5. Dear Yitz, as the others have said, it DOES get easier in time. There is so much that you can learn just using the internet. Know that now your wife will need to be mindful of other things such as shampoo, lotions, soap...topical preparations. Buy only the gluten-free brands. Also, licking stamps or envelopes should be avoided. Gluten can show up in many...
  6. Dear Del, the word, chocolate, in your post caught my eye. I know that you are looking for lists, and the others have been very helpful, yes. But if casein free is also a concern for you as it is for me, I've got chocolate for you. Tropical Source makes gluten free/casein free chocolate bars and baking chips. You can't tell the difference in either taste...
  7. Oh, bummer, Ianm!! I was afraid of that. Well thanks for sharing all that practical research. I'm guessing that maybe I'm one of the more sensitive people. Early on, I had mistakenly thought that Tabasco sauce was o.k. based on the label on a tiny lunch-size bottle. It said "vinegar", among the other ingredients. One drop on my forkfull of food caused...
  8. Dear Ianm, you sound just like me in that doctors let you down and you made your own health decision based on your personal observations (and you are comfortable with that.) I can identify completely with your choice of words,"no other option" in describing your situation! None of the doctors in my town had ever even heard of Celiac disease. When I was...
  9. Hi again. Nebraska dweller, I feel reassured by your comments about whether or not you get respect as a self-diagnosed Celiac. Then again, I feel disappointed but not surprised about the,as yet, unenlightened staff at the hospital trying to make you well with gluten-filled foods! Tell me; Nebraska is wheat country, isn't it? I live in rural Idaho and...
  10. Thank you, ladies, for your input. I think that I already knew that it was a no go situation, but was feeling like, "Tell me it ain't so!" Maybe the thing to do is try another brand in the hope that they've got better quality control. I am undaunted though, and if I must give up lentils, I will. (sigh...)
  11. O.K. people. Maybe someone can advise me on this one. I sure hope so, because we love lentils in our family. Somewhere I read that buying bulk is not a good idea when you have Celiac disease because you can't be certain that there won't be other things mixed in with what you are getting. So I threw out all my bulk lentils from the health store in favor...
  12. Way to go, celiac3270! 19 days and counting! You're on a roll (mal-ROLL-tation ) Gosh, I wish that I could tell you who I thought I saw that had both Celiac and malrotation, but I have no idea. I've been all over this message board and just don't remember, but could swear there were others. I realize that you are not suggesting that this could be the...
  13. Hi, Spruette. Sweet rice flour, as mentioned above is a much more finely ground product as well as being made from a different kind of rice than the normal rice flour. It has a higher starch content. For use as a thickening agent it is excellent. Be sure to mix it with a little cold water in a separate bowl before adding it to whatever it is that you...
  14. Thanks, celiac3270 for taking the time to reply. I wonder if it was malrotation. After I read your post, I did a little research on the subject. If what I understand is correct, the right side of the abdomen is where the action takes place, and that's the side that was most affected in myself. What I wonder now is if there is a connection between Celiac...
  15. Hi Everyone! Before I get into my question, I want to say how impressed I am with all the caring and informed people in this group. Wow! I'm fast becoming addicted to this message board. My question has to do with a symptom that I had as a pre-teen, more than 30 years ago. You see, until I had learned about Celiac disease and begun the diet several...
  16. Dear Anerissara, thank you so much for your post, because now, I too know that someone else had this experience. Also, during the 7 months that I have been gluten-free, I've had 2 accidents, and both times my reaction was, like yours, worse than before. So this is also something I had wondered about; it's interesting to compare notes!
  17. I started to feel better almost immediately, as far as the bloating, gas and cramps. After two weeks, though, major changes were coming about; things that I never dreamed were related to Celiac disease. Such as: my skin...I had always lamented that it wasn't very healthy looking or feeling. But after just two weeks on the diet it became soft and smooth...
  18. Thanks, Deb, for the shot in the arm. As far as I'm concerned, I've got Celiac disease and wild horses couldn't get me to KNOWINGLY consume gluten-laden food. My concern is that people might not respect our needs without a bonafide Celiac pedigree. We are, in essence, asking others to go to special pains in order to fulfill a request for gluten free foods...
  19. I also use Burt's Bees...The exact name is Beeswax Moisturizing Creme. It comes in a 2 oz. jar, and is a tad pricey at about $10.00, but just a little bit goes a long way. It's light, yet very soothing and effective.
  20. Thanks, everyone, for your comments and good advice! True, it is perhaps not necessary to put a label on my illness. I like the idea of simply stating that gluten products make me very sick, so I can not eat them. I do have to wonder what would happen, if, for instance, a self-diagnosed Celiac had to go to the hospital and rely on the diet provided there...
  21. Hello all! I'm new to the board, and hope that this topic hasn't already been covered ad nauseum. Seven months ago, I was fortunate enough to discover that I have Celiac disease. It has been a problem my whole life (age 47), and the signs were abundant, yet no doctor (or dentist, I might add) was able to figure it out. I don't mean to blame them, entirely...
