  1. There is a study from Fasano et al Open Original Shared Link that talks about how Gluten Sensitivity is different from Celiac Disease. Just because the types of damage done may be different doesn't make GS any less serious. I've been doing a gluten challenge for nearly two months now so I can get tested for celiac. I'm actually at my breaking point -...
  2. How terrifying. I think that it can be harder not to cheat for kids (actually anyone) who got diagnosed without something major that they remember happening. Hopefully the one good thing that will come from her having had to go through this terrible ideal is that she will NOT want to repeat that experience, and will be more careful in the future. I know...
  3. In addition to being cheap filler due to subsidies, it has properties that give foods certain desired textures. Grains are great for storage, too. Historically, once grains came about they made people in general less healthy, but they also allowed them to survive (as a population) in times of famine. We then went and made those the basis of our diet long...
  4. I've ended up having to report child neglect and abuse several times and it can be very obvious who made the report despite "confidentiality." Your sister's kids may need your support and it would be very bad if you got completely cut off from them. It is a decision to weigh very carefully, as a last resort. There are better ways to intervene, imo.
  5. Normally I'd say it's your business if you want to eat gluten despite the damage and suffering. But by now you must be aware that you could lose your baby over this. I doubt that's a consequence you are willing to risk. Being pregnant may be making sticking to the diet more difficult emotionally, but hopefully it will also give you the motivation you...
  6. We have a bedwarmer, too. I was afraid of it because I was scared of it being a fire hazard, and I also have sensory issues so feeling the lines running through it bothers me a bit. But it is SO worth it! We turn it on a bit before getting in bed, and I can have my side on without heating up my partner's side of the bed. I try to turn it off or at least way...
  7. We've been there and GAPS made a world of difference for us.
  8. I never noticed before but since I've been on my gluten challenge after a year gluten free my face has been flushing like it would if I drank too much wine.
  9. We supplement with concentrace trace mineral drops. As far as add/ADHD, my kids and I have overcome that with the gaps diet.
  10. I got a herpes outbreak when first going gluten free. But then it cleared up. A year of gluten free/GAPS diet and I only had one outbreak. Now I am five weeks into a gluten challenge and I've had three outbreaks (one right after the other) since reintroducing it. They seem to have been triggered by nuts. Nuts had been a trigger before i changed my diet but...
  11. We always bring our own food. Since you are flying in, I would find out about grocery stores in the area. You might find it valuable to arrive a day early (or early on the first day if it starts in the evening) so that you can do some shopping and prep cooking. Pack the essentials to do some minimal cooking while you are there.
  12. Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free products are processed in a dedicated facility. However, this facility also processes certified gluten-free oats. If you have a problem with certified gluten-free oats (some people are cross-reactive), then their products could be a problem for you. It is quite possible it was something else that caused your problem.
  13. I liked Open Original Shared Link and the previous one about dental health. It's more than just gluten and sugar that impact dental health, other foods can help or hinder it, too. The weston a price people have a lot to say about the connection between diet and teeth/jaw bone development/health, too.
  14. I'm sorry you are feeling so sick. Have you looked into the GAPS diet? It is based on the SCD mentioned above but has more of a focus on probiotic foods and has a phased approach. I (and others) have posted tons about it on here and elsewhere. Definitely check it out as it is aimed at correcting the imbalance of gut flora as well as "healing and sealing...
  15. Thank you for your thoughts. I, too, have had the same impression about studies done on fats. Industrial fats are a bad idea, regardless of the source. They've studied THAT and then given all fat a bad name. So I'm curious... in our last exchange on the subject you were saying that while the GAPS diets emphasis on saturated fats was fine for kids, that it...
  16. Skylark- you know I'm all about saturated fat and this thinking makes sense to me. However, I have a friend with MS who has been told she needs to stick to an extremely low-fat diet, which does seem to help her symptoms. I have read some studies backing that idea up. It seems very counter-intuitive to me, but I don't have data to back up another perspective...
  17. Filtered fresh carrot juice first thing in the morning helps. Also, lots of water and probiotic foods are a good idea for the big C. The whole thing about eating fiber never helped me and I think made it worse. When I started a low fiber diet including all of the above, my C got much better.
  18. Great advice from all of them! I want to respond to something else though. Your dr said to be gluten free for now? Did you get a celiac diagnosis? You really want to make sure all the testing is done and the diagnosis is made before going gluten free. Some drs will want you to go gluten free and then "challenge" it by eating it again. Once you are gluten...
  19. It's sounding like good news to me! I know how nerve wracking waiting to be sure can be. I've got my fingers crossed for you
  20. I've been meaning to write a book someday. Several of us on here talked about collaborating on a book to help friends and family understand cross-contamination, but it never took off. I'm hoping that when I have enough articles on my blog I can eventually pick out ones on various topics, update them, and turn them into books. I don't think it would be...
  21. I do think it's very valuable to write up all the symptoms you've been having, whether they seem related or not. Maybe another person looking at them will have another perspective or see a pattern you have missed. Maybe just writing them out will alert YOU to a pattern! I would bring that information to my doctor. Oh, and you could say it could be that...
  22. Your post brought tears to my eyes. You are on the path and you will get to the place where you can make the best possible choices for your physical health and mental health. You are absolutely right - this is not something you "can't" have. It is your CHOICE. You are being very honest with yourself, and that will take you far, faster than you imagine, I...
  23. I don't know if I have celiac disease. I was gluten-free for a year and now am doing a gluten challenge so I can get tested. Anyway, I wanted to add that I have shaky hands. It got much better and barely noticeable when I was gluten-free (and on GAPS), but came back a couple weeks into my gluten challenge. My partner noticed it the other day, so I know...
  24. Glad to help, silk. There are other tips, too... scheduling the appointment at the right time is really helpful. First thing in the morning or right after lunch can make for a more relaxed appointment since they're not running late yet. Going when symptoms are at their worst helps, and if you have a family, scheduling everyone with the same doctor within...
