  1. I'm new to this whole process of going gluten-free. When we started in November we didn't realize all the cross-contamination risks. It's only this week that we've finally finished decontaminating our kitchen (I think we have, anyway)... In our community a *lot* of people are trying to be gluten-free. At first I thought this was great. I've been surprised...
  2. What about another sensory rich alternative to play dough? Could flubber be made gluten free? What about actual clay? Good luck!
  3. I had a feeling that might be a problem. We don't have our own self-cleaning oven so we're going to have to use my mom's. Do you think it will stink up the whole house even after we're done?
  4. I'd definitely have the school keep up their efforts to stay gluten-free during the challenge. Is there any way you can do it when school is out, since behavior is part of the problem?
  5. I'm wondering if anyone has confirmed Dermititis herpitiformis which is not symmetrical or widespread. My daughter is about to undergo some testing for celiac, and one of the things that could point to it is that she has always had little itchy spots. Sometimes they look like bug bites, but they are more like a blister. They are isolated, (just one blister...
  6. Oops, my post says "grandiose" where it should say "grandkids" darn iPhone autocorrect! Anyway, I'm glad you are feeling a bit better. This is something you will overcome, I know it!
  7. The pieces are so little and some are electronic so obviously couldn't go in the dishwasher, but maybe a fine mesh bag would work. I'll have to figure that out. Thanks!
  8. I know the hives can be so scary. The first time my son got hives I totally freaked out! I still have no idea what caused it, though we now know his seasonal allergies are intense. He was playing outside in the raspberry bushes where he often played and next thing I knew he had the red spots head to toe. The er dr's laughed at me and gave him benadryl. ...
  9. We have very nice cast iron which is a family heirloom with great sentimental value and we can not afford to buy new. We use it all the time. We've heard that running it through a self clean cycle in the oven will burn out all the old seasoning and destroy the gluten proteins so that it can be safely reseasoned. Has anyone tried this? We've gotten rid of...
  10. I'm sorry you are dealing with people who are unwilling to listen, consider your feeling, or support your diet. It's funny, I grew up being accused of being a hypochondriac, too, though my health issues were not as serious, and now I always second guess myself when I have a concern. I talked to a dr re: my son yesterday and she said something you might appreciate...
  11. I'm not a dr and can't interpret results, but it seems to me that there is a range in which one doesn't have full on Celiac Disease reactions, but where they would be at high risk, and potentially doing damage that isn't showing up yet. If I were in your shoes, especially if experiencing symptoms, I think I'd just go gluten-free to prevent further/new damage...
  12. My son has been collecting Bionicles and other Legos, including Technic, for years... he loves them, plays with his old pieces all the time, and they have been a significant investment. When we were talking about contamination the other day, he said "What about my toys?" So... what about his toys? Have you all done anything special to clean toys? Or do...
  13. It sounds like they might be thinking if they don't see a reaction it must be ok. I would call the meeting with the nurse, teacher, teacher's assistant, and maybe the principal, too. I'd do an actual presentation, in person, about the actual damage to the small intestine that even undetectable levels can cause, and that these are not germs, they require...
  14. My kids are 10 and 11 and we've just started this gluten-free process. I can imagine it's much trickier with them still so little. We have decided to make our entire house gluten-free, and for all of us to maintain the diet even out of the house. We're still in the process of getting rid of all of our old cooking utensils and appliances, and have a bit more...
  15. My son's attitude has been much better since we went gluten-free, but I think he's getting cross-contaminated and now his anxiety has come back. HOWEVER, when we went gluten-free *I* developed awful symptoms. I never thought I had a problem with gluten before, but I went gluten-free in solidarity. This was scary for me because I've achieved a delicate...
  16. Wow, weluvgators! Your post brought tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry that your daughter's "celebration" turned out so badly and that she even ended up in the hospital the second time. Did they do the same procedure the second time, even though it was obviously a different cause or just aspirate it? How old is your daughter (my son is 10). I hope people won...
  17. My 10 year old son had joint pain and other pain in his legs and arms for years. This fall he got extreme pain in his right hip and could barely move and was screaming in pain when I moved him. We ended up in the hospital having surgery on his hip (we were in the hospital for 4 days). The drs thought it was either a staff infection or a reactive rheumatoid...
  18. Hi, I hope it's ok that I'm putting my intro here! I got started on the forums at glutenfree as "joy" but have found that the forums here are more active. Over the past couple months, my partner and I have begun to suspect that our 10 year old son has celiac disease, and now we are wondering about our 11 year old daughter and myself as well. My kids spend...
