  1. Our daughter was anemic despite liquid supplementation for a year prior to diagnosis with celiac. Since starting the diet in February, we've seen her iron numbers climb. Recently, they dropped back down to 10 and her doctor advised us to give her a multivitamin with iron. So, I have two questions: 1. Does anybody know a brand or where to purchase a...
  2. Thank you for the detailed advice!
  3. I should clarify, I've never had heartburn. It's the back of my throat that hurts - like a surface/scratchy hurt (not a swollen hurt). And, I've been getting canker sores in my mouth and tongue. I don't think that I have an acid reflux problem. More likely, it's gluten cc getting me, or some other food intolerance that I don't know about. Question...
  4. Hmmm...I wasn't gold-standard diagnosed, but my Ttg was in the borderline range. My DD had just been diagnosed and I was feeling terrible, so I decided to just "try out" the diet. Within one day I started to feel better and haven't looked back. So...I guess I'll never officially know if I have celiac, but I feel that I probably do. I do drink one...
  5. I hadn't thought about cc. It does make sense though. If they went away after I started the diet, then it's probably gluten causing them now. Ugh. I wish there wasn't so much detective work with this! Thanks for the reminder.
  6. Hi all, I've been gluten-free since March and I'm feeling truly wonderful compared to before. Since going gluten-free I've haven't had sore throats and canker sores like I used to (constant sore throat that wouldn't go away), so I figured that they were caused by the gluten and was quite happy to see them stop. But recently (last few weeks)...
  7. There is an adults only pool, spa, bars, and restaurant. There were lots of adult only families on the ship.
  8. I was just logging in here to type my own review of my Disney cruise! We went on a 7 night cruise with DCL and just got back a week ago. Myself and DD (age 5) both have celiac and we were well taken care of by the staff. I can't say enough about our wonderful dining experience. First, the rolls at dinner each night are delicious and served warm! ...
  9. DD was diagnosed with Celiac in February at age 5 following a year and half of tummy troubles. Thinking back the other day, I remembered that at the age of 3 she broke out in a terrible rash ALL OVER her body while I was away on vacation. My mom took her to the hospital it was so bad and they didn't have a clue what it was. It went away before I returned...
  10. Thanks! I'm in Canada too, so I'll just tell my doctor that I should have this done. Again, glad to hear things went well for you.
  11. Welcome to the board. First, if your daughter does have celiac disease it is good that you are finding out at such a young age. Her overall health and well-being will be that much better for it whether she currently has symptoms or not. One of the best things about celiac disease is that the solution is dietary. Be prepared that if the doctor suspects...
  12. love2travel - That's terrific news! I want to ask you, how did you go about getting a bone density scan done? I went on the diet in March based on borderline blood and my daughter's positive biopsy. I KNOW that the diet has made a huge difference in my quality of life, but I'm in my mid-thirties and wondering - If I truly do have celiac, should I be getting...
  13. Hi all, A family member of mine currently has what we believe is DH all over her hands. How does she get tested? Who does she need to see? Does the rash have to be in a certain state to take a sample? Thanks.
  14. Does anybody have recommendations of restaurants in Barcelona that have gluten-free options? DD (age 5) and I both have celiac. We will be staying off of the Ramblas near the Gothic Quarter.
  15. My DD and I both have celiac. She had anemia and very slow growing hair. Since starting the diet a few months ago her hair has begun to grow faster and I've noticed that I need to cut her fingernails more often too. Looking back, I've always had low iron and at times it was low enough to be anemia. If DD hadn't been diagnosed, I would never have known...
  16. Thanks for the replies everyone! I remain hopeful. I will try making the cookies from scratch. They look delicious! I enjoy baking, but don't always have a lot of time to do it. (I have to spend more time cooking now as I'm sure many of you can appreciate.) Good to hear that the brownie mix is worthwhile. I bought one of those too.
  17. So I just made the Betty Crocker chocolate chip cookie mix for the first time. I followed the directions exactly and they turned out VERY thin/delicate and crumbly. I can't pick them up without having them fall apart in my hand. Has anybody else found this to be the case? Are there any modifications I can make to the mix to make the cookies hold...
  18. constant mild headaches gone iron level up depression gone energy level better than ever brain fog gone (didn't realize it was a symptom - thought it was just me getting old/tired) gums improved - dentist says at least 10 times better in just three months on diet dark eyelids lightening up - hoping dark circles start to go away too no...
  19. The duodenum is the top of the small intestine (where they take the biopsies from). I believe that scalloping of the mucosal folds is an indication of damage caused by celiac disease. Hopefully your daughter will get some relief soon on the gluten-free diet.
  20. We went through this with DD before diagnosis. It was totally frustrating because they told us to feed her fibre, whole grains, and prune juice - nothing helped. The enema didn't help. Daily laxatives didn't help. I can empathize with you about the amount of bathroom tissue, soiled laundry, and repeat trips to the washroom. The previous poster is correct...
  21. My daughter, who has celiac, was diagnosed at age 5 but had a lot of the same symptoms that you described. From birth she was a terrible sleeper, lean, pot belly, short, and the constipation/diarrhea cycle started at around age 3. She was also breastfed. She also backtracked on the potty training once the bloating and abdominal pain kicked in. It wasn...
  22. Yes, get her tested for celiac. My DD had many of the same symptoms (lack of weight gain, dental enamel decay, poor sleep, bags under eyes...) but wasn't diagnosed until age 5. She started out with those symptoms and then developed the bloated/distended belly and terrible abdominal pain, and anemia which prompted the celiac testing. I was told that...
  23. Stopped eating gluten They said I had depression My gut knew better
  24. Our daughter's dietician suggested adding skim milk powder to her milk to increase her protein intake. She said to use this milk in her icecream milkshakes too. If you add the powder to the milk and mix it in a jug and let it sit in the fridge overnight, then the texture is much better than if you add the powder and drink it right away. In a milkshake with...
  25. OK, so I've been on the diet for almost three months and I think I'm over the initial hurdles of navigating the label reading and basics of feeding my family. So, I'm ready to try some new foods. I've heard such good things about quiona and I'm ready to give it a try. It's in my pantry, but I have no idea what to do with it. I'd love any tips on how...
