  1. We purchased a breadmaker. I'm not sure that buying pre-packaged mixes would make it any cheaper. We buy the flours separately and store them in plastic containers. Then we make a flour mix and store it in a larger container so that we can use if for different recipes (bread, pancakes, waffles...). We make one loaf every few weeks because we just aren...

  3. Yes! I've been waiting for the Chex! Lara bars are at Costco in boxes of 12 bars (4 each of 3 flavours - apple, key lime, peanut butter). I don't remember the exact price for the box, but it's cheaper than buying them separately at the grocery store. They are located in the candy aisle for some reason.
  4. I don't like Hamburger Helper either. I'd rather eat something I make from scratch. But, the cake mixes I picked up will come in handy in a pinch! I also picked up a box of the Bisquick and noticed that it says "Made in Canada" - but we can't purchase it here!
  5. I'm amazed at the variety of gluten-free pre-packaged goods that are available in the U.S.! Bisquick, Betty Crocker brownies, cakes, cookies, Chex cereal, Rice Krispies, so many cookies, Fruity Pebbles, Progresso soups, Hamburger Helper, crackers... I know that we don't NEED any of these items, but it sure feels good to know that if DD needs cookies...
  6. Thanks!
  7. kinnikinnik tapioca english muffins (taste like a "real" english muffin - mmmmmm....toasted with butter for a real treat) I'd love to try the Bisquick. It's made in Canada, but not sold here.
  8. I've seen a lot of people mention travel cards to show in restaurants. Do you get these from somewhere in particular, or do you make your own?
  9. I've noticed that a lot of people here are also soy-free and say it is really bad for us. Can you tell me what soy is found in, and what it does to the body?
  10. I've always had difficulty falling and staying asleep. I'm falling asleep a bit easier since starting the diet (finally able to exercise during the day which is probably making me more tired), but I wake up throughout the night. Does this happen to anybody else? Any suggestions for what I can do?
  11. 1. Embrace the change and look forward with excitement to all of the new food and cooking adventures you have before you! 2. If you are doing this for/with your children, the less of a big deal you make of it, the less they're going to resist. It's just food - and food is tasty. We're so lucky that we can change the course of our health through diet...
  12. I feel the same way Tina. It's remarkable how similar our stories are. My feet were so bad after my second pregnancy that I would wobble around the house and stumble. It was awful. The good news is, as you've found, that if gluten is the culprit you'll be feeling better once the testing is done and you start the diet!
  13. I still can't believe how similar our stories are. I also felt "on edge" and irritable all the time. I also had problems with my face. For me it was a slight stutter that developed. It was as though I couldn't get my mouth to move properly when I wanted it to. Most of the time I felt like I was about to drop to the floor, but I blamed it on stress and...
  14. Ooooh...I hope that my seasonal allergies go away one day! Life without ragweed and hayfever PLUS all of the other perks of figuring out this celiac thing would be sweet!
  15. Wow. Your story sounds identical to mind except I never had gallbladder problems. Even the fact that I developed more symptoms following my second pregnancy. Everything is the same. Whenever a new symptom developed I would say to myself "Oh, well, I'm pregnant. I just had a baby. I'm getting older. I'm a working mom. I have stress. This is just...
  16. We've never been given any explanation for why his B12 is low. His plan is to stop getting the shots altogether to "see what happens". I don't like this plan. He's going to get sick again! I am going to read about pernicious anemia.
  17. He gets them once a month and when he first started, they were closer together. He was very sick/weak/tingly all over by the time we found out about the low B12.
  18. My husband is B12 deficient and has been getting injections of B12 for about 5 years. His B12 numbers are still quite low. He was tested for celiac (blood test) and the result was negative. If the B12 is being injected, then it's not going through the intestine - right? Or does it? Could this still be possibly celiac? What else could cause low B...
  19. Gliadin Ab IgA Value 4 Ref Range >20->20 Gliadin Ab IgG Value 39 Ref Range >20->20 tTg IgA Value 6 Ref Range >20->20 "False negative may occur in patients who are IgA deficient. Elevated IgG antibodies indicate that DH cannot be ruled out, although the specificity of the antibody is limited." I don't have a...
  20. OK, here it is. It's from Gluten Free on a Shoestring by Nicole Hunn. 8 tbsp unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 tbsp vanilla 2 1/4 cups flour 1 1/4 tsp xanthan gum 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda chocolate chips
  21. So, I've tried baking chocolate chip cookies once before and they were not that great. They ended up quite crumbly and dry and a little too sweet. They were very granular in texture. I'd like to make a cookie that is either crunchy without being dry, or a chewy cookie. I'm new to this gluten-free baking thing, so any tips or recipe suggestions are appreciated...
  22. Thanks everybody. Gemini: I agree that it's not restrictive. I mean, we're restricted from eating crappy pre-packaged and fast food stuff, which we shouldn't be eating anyway. But really, I'm eating a healthier and more varied diet now than I was prior to "diagnosis". Are there any nutrients in grains that we can't get from some other food?
  23. I'm reading Peter Green's book and I just came to the part about Latent Celiac Disease and he states that "there is a general acceptance among medical professionals studying celiac disease that latent celiac disease should not be treated with a gluten-free diet" and that "treatment should be reserved for those diagnosed with celiac disease". Why would it...
  24. Thanks everyone! I used to make banana bread once a month or so and I'm starting to miss it being 2 months on the diet. I'm looking forward to trying these recipes!
