  1. This is an e-mail I received from The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center:

Sign the petition asking the FDA for gluten-free standards now!

Last year, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials made a commitment to the celiac community that the gluten-free labeling rule would be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2012 (September 30).

That date has come and gone.

The FDA has already heard from us. It's time for higher officials to know the celiac community needs gluten-free labeling standards now.

The White House has provided us the opportunity to express our concerns through an open petition. Make sure your voice is heard!

Visit the WhiteHouse.gov "We the People" website to sign the petition. (Not sure why the link doesn't highlight & take you directly to it....it did in my email.)

According to the White House, if enough people sign the petition, it will be reviewed and administration officials will respond to the signers of the petition. In other words, we'll have their attention. We need at least 25,000 signatures by November 2nd.

Anyone age 13 and over can sign the petition. In order to sign, users must create an account at WhiteHouse.gov and verify their email address. It's quick and easy.

    Please sign the petition today!

    Sincerely,

    Carol Shilson

  2. I'm not sure if this has become a topic on here or not, but I would encourage everyone to read the e-mail below and sign the petiton to get our foods labeled.

  3. I had the DeBoles gluten-free angel hair pasta last night for the first time, and had a severe reation to it. I've haven't had any recent incidents and that was the only new thing I tried yesterday. Has anyone else had a reaction to their product? I feel like crap today ....been so careful and now this.

  4. I can totally relate to this....I've been gluten-free since 12/2010 & have gained 12 lbs. I'm so frustrated because I eat a very balanced diet. We cook @ home and I only have 2-3 gluten-free cookies during the day when I'm craving sweets. I hardly ever have gluten-free bread and watch my carb intake. Had my tyroid checked 2 weeks ago & everything is ok. I workout 6 days/week 1 1/2 hrs. & still I battle the weight. I change up my exercise routine so I know it's not that. Food goes right through me so I'm not constipated, I'm actually wondering why I'm not the skinniest person out there considering how much "D" I have. I'm about to try protein shakes as a meal supplement hoping maybe that will work.

  5. I was purchasing vitamins from Vitacost.com and noticed they have a lot of gluten-free foods & products that are much cheeper than in stores. I found several products that I eat on a regular basis and others that I've never heard of. Eating gluten-free can be very expensive and I figured it would be cost effective to order online (I don't think you have to pay shipping if ordering a certain amount).....has anyone else done this? I'm just wondering if the food is still fresh or broken up (meaning pasta) by the time it reaches you.

I'm all about trying to save :)

  6. I experience the tremors, rapid heartrate, along with sweating, weakness, dizziness when I'm glutened. I haven't been tested yet, FYI.

Does this happen with CC or direct gluten consumption?

I'm assuming CC because I know the things I am eating are gluten-free, but it doesn't happen like this all the time. That's what has me puzzled. I get ALL of the same exact symptoms you listed when it does happen.

  7. I have been gluten-free for 1 year & 3months now, but still get glutened every now & then by accident. Most of the time I just experience the standard reaction, but occasionally (like last night) I have the stomach cramps and D and then while I'm on the toilet I start this uncontrollable shaking/tremors and then I start having heart palpations. The next day I'm completely wiped out and my muscles are tight and fatigued. It's almost like a panic attack, but I'm thinking something is triggering it....I'm not sure....I don't think it was anything I ate because what I ate was gluten-free.

I do live in FL and my allergies have kicked in the past couple of days so I can't walk outside without having any allergy attack (never had those until recently) so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. I can't cut the grass anymore because I have a similar reaction.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

  8. Mine have definitely changed too....I have the typical bowl symptoms for a few days, but the neuro last for several weeks. I was glutened 3 weeks ago and now I can't get rid of the eye twitch, ringing in the ears and the brain fog, not to mention the joint inflamation and being off balance. Headaches....that's a daily occurance for me right now so I know where you are coming from. The neuro is definitly lasting longer than before. Usually that was gone before the intestinal issues.

  9. I have suffered from severe anxiety for about 2 years now....to the point I had several panic attacks. After reading many post that suggested a vitamin deficiency I decided what the heck - I'll try anything at this point. I bought the Super Nutrition Simply One Women (with the PMS reducer) and let me tell you....I am a NEW woman. Not only has my PMS symptoms disappeared, I'm not having ANY anxiety issues (only mildly when I've gotten CC), but nothing that I can't control. I've been on them now for 3 months and not only has it helped my anxiety, but my heart doesn't palpate as often. These are a life saver and they also have them for men too (minus the PMS reducer)

I wanted to pass this along because I know there are alot of Celiac sufferers out there who are dealing with anxiety issues. The company offers a money back guarantee also....you can't go wrong with that.

  10. I read a post yesterday that brought up the possibility of someone maybe having candida. When it referred to becoming bloated after eating certain foods (sweets/ice cream) it got me to wondering if I possibly have it. I get severly bloated after eating ice cream and I'm usually bloated in the AM after having a glass of wine the night before. I'm a female and around my ovulation time I get severe pain and feelings of having trapped gas, but that only last a few days & then I'm back to normal (well normal for me). I have been dealing with a lot of D for a few weeks now, but I assumed that was from accidental glutening from some artichokes I ate. I get mouth ulcers frequently and I stay gassy.

Does this sound like possible candida? and if so, how do I get tested for it. I see my GP on Monday so I would like to know what I need to tell her.

  11. Did anyone else listen to Nancy Snyderman talk about the "gluten-free Diet" on the Today Show? She was talking about how gluten-free foods are not providing the nutrients your body needs and refered to it as the "new sexy diet craze." OMG....I don't know about anyone else, but there is NOTHING sexy about having to eat gluten-free and especially nothing sexy about what happens if someone in our cases doesn't eat gluten-free. I was fuming by the time the segment was over and I was especially disappointed when she answered a viewers question about wanting to know if the stomach pains she's had for years could be due to gluten and Nancy's response was to definitly have it checked out, but in the meantime she should start a gluten-free diet. That is horrible advise! I can't believe she didn't do more research on this topic before she started giving advise on what you should do if you think you have Celiac's.

Please tell me someone else saw this.....

  12. I have palpations on a regular basis and that is one of my main symptoms when I'm glutened. However, I started taking a womans vitamin about 3 weeks ago and I have to say that my palpations have lessened. I'm starting to think that I had a vitamin deficiency. The palpations are worse around my monthly cycle so I know hormones do play a part in them. My anxiety has also improved since starting the vitamins.

I've had all the heart test run and everything has come back normal. I used to get stressed out and develope terrible anxiety thinking something was wrong with me, but now I try to ignore it and don't let it bother me. I'm hoping these new vitamins are the answer and that I don't have to deal with the palpations anymore.

  13. Has anyone used Phillips' Colon Health Probiotics? Are they gluten free? I can't find the info any where.

I don't know anything about the Phillips' brand but I have used the Natren brand for 6 years now and have had wonderful results. I did try a brand from Costco shortly after going gluten-free and had major set backs. I definitly recommend probiotics to everyone with Celiacs.

  14. I can relate to the heart palpations, however I did start taking a multi-vitamin about 3 weeks ago and I have to say that I haven't had any heart related issues. It took me a full 10 months to start having more good days than bad days. It takes a while to heal and you will find that there are going to be foods that you can't tolerate for a while that will give you the same symptoms as gluten foods. I had an issue with nightshades early on, but can tolerate them now. I've been gluten-free 1 year.

I did find I was getting cc by my perfume, spray in hair conditioner, hand sanitizer and pet food. Most people don't think about these things, but they can make you just as sick as eating food with gluten.

I'm feeling much better now and I know you will to. It takes time and patience. You might have to cut other things out in the beginning so your insides can heal and then slowly add them back in.

    Good luck!

  15. Ive had terrible eczema since I was a baby but it has cleared up now since being gluten-free, but it does flare up when i get glutened. Ive been gluten-free 1year with many slip ups in the beginning. I have developed more food allergies and an airborn allergy to gluten. The longer I go without being glutened the worst my symptoms are when I do get glutened. I never had the GI issues before but that is one of my main symptoms now along with anxiety. It took me months to heal (approx 11) and everyone is different. One thing I did realize I was getting cc by was my dog & cat food. I have to wash my heads immediately after feeding them. Perfume is a biggie for me too.

Hope this helps and you start feeling better soon!

  16. This is my 2nd Christmas gluten-free also.....Much better this year! I look at it this way....at least I don't have to exercise extra because I've eaten too much junk. It has been nice not being sick this year....I'm finally getting the hang of it. Stick with what you know it gluten-free and don't try anything that others claim is gluten-free and you should be ok.

    Merry Christmas to all!!

  17. I'm 1 yr gluten-free this month. I do exercise and that does help. Im thinking its the time of year...so much to do, get togethers that I can't eat at & now we're on vacation and not being at home in my comfort zone I think is adding to it. I have recently started taking a multi-vitamin so maybe that will help. I go to the Dr. in Jan & will discuss it with her.

Thanks for the feed back.... I know now I'm not alone.

    Merry Christmas!

  18. I've never had anxiety issues prior to being diagnosed with Celiac, but ever since going gluten-free I've had terrible anxiety. Is this normal? Does anyone else have anxiety issues even when they haven't been glutened?

I seem to deal with this on a daily basis and especially when I'm out of my "comfort zone." I don't want to go on any medication.

Is there anyone else dealing with this?

  19. I'm feeling a little better today...chest tightness gone, just nausea & "wiped out." I've stayed in my PJ's all day so I have rested most of the day.

I do take B12, but I've decided I do need to start taking a good multi-vitamin. I also have things other than the Celiacs that started 3 years ago by a severe viral infection. That is actually what triggered my celiac symptoms. What I was dealing with last night was what I delt with on a weekly basic prior to gluten-free diet. I've had it happen a few times since, but not as severe. I'm praying this was the last time.

  20. I've had some pretty severe symptoms hit me tonight & can't figure what I've eaten....Got glutened last Friday, but thought all was good....today I spent the day shopping & even packed my own lunch. Was having some boughts of feeling like I couldn't catch my breath completely, but I mowed the grass yesterday so I just figured my allergies were acting up. Soaked in the bath tonight and had the heaviness in my chest, but I've had that "anxious" feeling all day. After bath the D & nausea hit along with the uncontrollable tremors. Kept feeling faint so I hung out in my daughters room just in case I passed out, but while talking to her I burst into tears....I don't get why I'm feeling like this. Can "the time of month" play a role in how severe the symptoms are?

This is how I used to feel before going gluten free and haven't had anything this severe for months. I've even be cc several times, but never reacted this bad. Any ideas??

As I'm typing this I feel like I am freezing and can't stop shaking. I HATE THIS FEELING :(

  21. I have been using a pocket size hand sanitizer from Bath & Body works since Oct. and did not realize that it has "wheat amino acids" in it. I happened to look at the inactive ingredients today just to show my mother that it was safe....and what do I find....WHEAT!! That definitly explains why I get CC and can't figure out what it's from. I only use it occasionally, but I can tell you there are definitly times I eat and know that what I'm eating is okay, but end up sick anyway.....now I realize it's probably after I have used this product.

Just wanted to share so others could avoid the same issue. I would never have imagined hand sanitizer being a NO, NO.
