  1. Heather, I was going to say homemade, until I finished reading your post! I have not found any gluten-free country gravy mix yet, but that doesn't mean it does exist. I have never been able to get the gravy right either. It's times like this that I wish my mom was still alive to show me how to do it right!! I can still remember how good her...
  2. Hi Judy, Thanks for caring. I would be interested to hear what they say about their products. I think I will check out the site and send an e-mail request also. They might respond qucker if more than one person asks a similar question. I have known about the caffeine trigger for migraines for a long time, so I tended to avoid caffeine. I've...
  3. Hi Jill, If your results are negative, please do not rule out Celiac. I can't really tell you what is going on in your intestines, but I can tell you what I've read, and my own personal experience. First I've read that the lining of the intestines starts to heal after three days. This does not mean that it will heal "completely" in that...
  4. Alex, Keep in mind that there was probably dairy (and possibly gluten, since Rice Dream is not gluten-free) in the Rice Dream "ice cream". But also that when you have one food sensitivity you can easily have others. My three kids and I are gluten and dairy intolerant, and one of the things my kid's doctor mentioned was the possiblilty of them being intolerant...
  5. Janine , was the pasta Tinkyada brand? This is the brand we eat and it is great! I've served it to non-gluten-free folks and they never knew the difference. We're having it for dinner tonight in fact! Sheryl , Welcome to the site. It is a great sourch of support and information. I also have recurrent bouts of diarrhea and constipation when...
  6. 1) What are your 3 favourite desserts? Strawberry Shortcake, Dreyers Ice Cream (Rocky Road and Strawberry are my favorite), the boxed mix cheese cake like Royal brand (I know it isn't like the real stuff, but it brings back childhood memories and I never had "real" cheesecake until I was a teenager and it is too rich). I haven't had the last two things...
  7. I have been having headaches again, mostly caused from the heat (over 100 everyday) and light, which have always been triggers for my migraines. Caffeine seems to help with the headaches, but I'm not a big soda drinker and coffee has not been my first choice since being dairy free limits what type of creamer I can use. Before being gluten-free I used to...
  8. Here is my interpretation. See, my doctors office considers (wrongly) anything under 30 to be negative on the IgA and IgG, and under 20 negative on the tTg. So my interpretation is that they are ignoring the obviously positive IgA, since they seem to think the other two are negative. The problem with this is that the blood tests are NOT as accurate as...
  9. I have one of the gluten-free/cf product guides and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs to avoid gluten and casein. My three kids and I follow the gluten-free/cf diet and although it is a challenge, it is certainly worth the effort. We are all doing a lot better in regards to our health. God bless, Mariann
  10. Vegetable shortening alone should be gluten-free, and as an ingredient in other foods it should be fine, but I agree that you should check anything that you think is questionable. And I only use the Heinz ketchup packets and the French's Mustard packets. Any others just are not worth getting sick over. God bless, Mariann
  11. I'm not sure that I agree with that statement. It may have been the yogurt or the Spice Islands spice. If it was a seasoning mixture and not just a plain spice, then it has a higher probability of containing gluten. I try to stick with McCormick single spices and gluten free spice mixtures sold at specialty stores. Just not worth getting sick over. But...
  12. Karen, I'm so glad that you found out about the Gas-X. celiac3270 has given you a lot of excellent advice, and I suggest you follow it as best as possible. Can you believe he is only a teenager, something like 14! He is so much more grown up that a lot of adults I know!! The suggestion of not placing your food directly on the counter/microwave turntable...
  13. Karen, I get that burning/gnawing feeling in my upper intestines from dairy. I am dairy free now since November 2003, and gluten free since January 2004. The only thing that made going back on gluten for a gluten challenge (Nov-Jan) possible was being dairy free. I get horrible cramping, gas and diarrhea from dairy, and it is the casein and NOT lactose...
  14. I have this whether I've had a gluten accident or not. I was told after I had my gallbladder out (5 years ago) thatthis was a common side affect, so I just figured that was causing it...
  15. Here is a link to the Red Cross Blood Donation Eligibility Guidelines. Open Original Shared Link I have given blood twice since going gluten free in January. It is the first time in my life that I have not been turned away because my iron was low. My iron has been fine since being gluten-free and I feel fine after donating. The guidelines say...
  16. I have a book on vitamin and mineral supplements and in the section on hearing loss (which also includes ringing in the ears) it says that ringing in the ears can be caused by magnesuim deficiency and also might be connected to a zinc deficiency. Other hearing problems can be deficiencies in vitamins A, E & D. It also said that many hearing problems...
  17. I have not seen an actual booklet from Clan Thompson in person, but they seem to be good. I use these other lists that are free to print out. I cross referrence and figure if they both have the item on the list it is probably safe. I follow up with a phone call to the company if needed. One of the lists has all of the phone numbers for the top pharmaceutical...
  18. I also get a ringing in my ears quite often. Sometimes it bothers me, but most of the time it doesn't. I've always had it since I was a kid, so I figure I must just be used to it. It could possibly be a nutritional deficiency, but I don't know, since I can't get any of my doctors to order any more tests for me... I guess I could push harder, but I am just...
  19. Promethius labs is one of the best labs for Celiac testing in the US, but if your daughter has been gluten-free for 9 months then there is no point in testing her right now. About the only thing you could test for is the Celiac genes, unless you put her back on gluten for 3-6 months (some doctors will tell you that a few weeks is enough time, but it isn...
  20. You should ask for the biopsy first. Even one positive blood test is enough to warrant a biopsy and going gluten free first could alter the final results. There is no reason NOT to do the biopsy first, and regardless of the biopsy results, you should try the gluten free/dairy free diet as soon as the biopsy is finished. Then you will have a clear picture...
  21. I agree with celiac3270. Your daughter should be tested regardless of symptoms (or the lack of them). I had digestive problems off and on during my childhood, which pretty much went a way in my teens, and came back worse after I had children in my mid-twenties. The consistent symptoms were migraine type headaches and joint pain. I still get both...
  22. Hi Karen, Coffeemate is gluten free, but NOT dairy free. Mocha Mix is the only dairy free creamer found in most stores. It works for coffee if you are used to plain cream in the coffee. If you are used to the flavored creamers, there just isn't a good substitute. Sorry. God bless, Mariann
  23. If you were gluten free for a month before your testing, then that would explain them being negative. As for what to do when you get gluten, there isn't much to do, except take it easy and get plenty of rest. And be careful not to have too many "accidents". It takes me about 4-5 days to get over the GI symptoms, but the fatigue can last up to a few...
  24. A positive biopsy will just confirm that the blood tests were correct. Some doctors don't even have you do a biopsy, but most will recommend it. Your doctor should have told you to stay on gluten until the biopsy was done. It can take up to 3-6 months after being gluten free for enough damage to be done in the intestines to show on a biopsy. (according...
  25. Hi Jill, If you are already gluten free, then your biopsy will most likely show negative. The lining of the intestines heals pretty quickly for most people. Only people with very severe damage take longer than a few weeks for the lining to heal to the point of not being considered Celiac during a biopsy. I felt so much better being gluten-free,...
