ARCHIVED Trick Or Treat List
gf4life replied to flagbabyds's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Judy, Yes, I can have Coconut Milk. I haven't tried it much though. It doesn't really work well as a substitute for cooking, baking, etc. And most "milk" chocolates do contain milk in some form(anywhere from whole milk to just milkfat). There are some semi-sweet and dark chocolates that do not contain milk. You just have to read the labels. ... -

ARCHIVED Trick Or Treat List
gf4life replied to flagbabyds's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had gotten a copy of that list a few weeks ago. I took the liberty of modifying it to work with a gluten and dairy free diet. Make sure you always read the labels though since manufacturers change ingredients all too often. GLUTEN FREE & DAIRY FREE SUGGESTIONS: -
ARCHIVED Autistic 3 Yr. Old Grandson
gf4life replied to Lorrie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My nephew has autism and he lives on the things his body shouldn't have, pizza, buttered toast, mac n' cheese, etc... His parents are not receptive to the Gluten-free Casein-free diet since it would be very hard to implement and they just try to keep him happy, but they aren't helping him by giving him gluten and dairy. It can be very hard to find a suitable... -
If you remember the forum it was in then you can find it. Make a reply to the post and it will bring it back up to the top of the current list. If you don't know the name of the topic or the forum it was in, you will need to do a search to find it. I hope this helps. God bless, Mariann

ARCHIVED Xantham Gum - Breaking The Bank!
gf4life replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is an absolute pain in the behind to try to write it off on your taxes. You can only write off the difference in costs of the gluten-free food vs the "normal" version. You have to keep records of everything you buy and the regular cost of the gluten containing food that is similar. Yes you would be able to write off the entire cost of things like xanthan... -
The book Against the Grain by Jax Peters Lowell has a French language "wheat allergy/gluten intolerance" card in the back. If you don't have this book, you might be able to get a copy from your local library and could copy that page. It might help. I hope you have a wonderful trip! God bless, Mariann

I guess if we go out to eat we will all just have to start carrying our own containers from home to take the leftovers in. It just seems a little odd to make food containers that people will be allergic to. I understand the need to make them biodegradable, but there has to be a better way. Isn't paper biodegradable? It might take a bit onger, but...

I don't know of any places to eat, since I've never been there, but I would suggest you print out a card in French that says what you can't eat and why (unless of course you speak French and are confident you can make the wait staff understand your needs and communicate them to the chef). I'm under the impression that bread is a staple at every meal, and...

ARCHIVED Are There Any Books You Would Recommend?
gf4life replied to Killarney's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have Against the Grain, Wheat Free-Worry Free, and A Personal Touch on...Celiac Disease. All of them are good books and worth having on hand. I like Wheat Free-Worry Free the best for information of those three. Against the Grain is a good guide book to have on hand for gluten free living. But my recommendation if you want to learn more about the negative... -
My new favorite cookbook is called "The AiA Gluten & Dairy Free Cookbook"compiled by Marilyn Le Breton. I recomend this book for anyone who has multiple intolerances and allergies. For each recipe it states what it is "free" of in addition to gluten and dairy. There are recipes for things that are: CF = Corn Free EF = Egg Free FF = Fruit...

I had seen the electric non-stick tortilla makers at the store before, but I wasn't willing to pay the $30+ for one. I wasn't sure it was worth the money. WE can buy corn tortillas, but since we are also dairy free the one gluten-free wrap available is not okay for us. We missed having flour tortillas. Today I was so excited because I found a tortilla...

ARCHIVED What The Heck Is Corn Gluten?
gf4life replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Corn gluten is a corn protein. It is NOT the kind of gluten that hurts us. It is considered safe for a gluten free diet. All corn products are safe as long as they don't contain anything made from wheat, rye, barley and oats. God bless, Mariann -

ARCHIVED Yay For Gf Lists....
gf4life replied to kirst4588's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you for posting the Hormel gluten-free list! Yesterday I went to the store to get some chili. I had been having a craving for some for a few days and I HAD to have some. I didn't have time to make any homemade and so I went to the store. 10 minutes of searching and I finally settled on Stagg Classic. It was one of the two that only the modified... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab And Iga Deficiency
gf4life replied to Happycat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I suggest e-mailing Dr. Fine and asking him directly if this would affect the test results. I don't recommend e-mailing the lab, they very rarely answer e-mails, but Dr. Fine usually gets back to you within a day or two. His e-mail can be found online, but you really have to look for it on his websites, so I'll tell you what it is: Dr. Kenneth Fine kdxfine... -
ARCHIVED Am I Grain Intolerant?
gf4life replied to Aeval's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I responded to your post about this in the Doctors section. -
Your doctor has it backwards. You need to be ON gluten grains for at least three months for the antibodies to show up. Please print out some articles about celiac disease/gluten intolerance to take to her that talk about this. Some good ones are: University of Chicago Open Original Shared Link University of Maryland Open Original Shared Link...

ARCHIVED See's Candies
gf4life posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I e-mailed See's late last week and this was their response today. I also asked which of the gluten free candies were dairy free, so this is included at the end. Please note that they say all of their candies are processed on the same lines that also process candies that include dairy. I would assume that this also means their is a risk of cross-contamination... -
ARCHIVED Reaction After Touching Foods ?
gf4life replied to wildones's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know that they say that gluten cannot get into the intestines via the skin, but I have had reactions to touching gluten foods. I also wash my hands thouroughly after touching the offending foods, but still get a reaction. I think it is that the gluten is just very hard to wash out of the skin. So some residue must be there the next time I touch my own... -
ARCHIVED "traveling" Gluten Free
gf4life replied to tarnalberry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Burdee, Are you soy intolerant or allergic? I'm soy allergic and can tolerate soybean oil and soy lecithin. Any other part of the soybean and I'm horribly itchy all over. I was bummed about the honey sesame almonds containing butter. I was looking forward to trying some after a friend told me about them. Oh well. I could probably try making... -
Don't forget rice. You can cook a large pot of rice and then as long as you refrigerate it when it is cool, it will last for quite a few days. Then you can heat up a bowl of it anytime you need, and top it with any of the wonderful suggestions the others have made. You don't want to do too much low carb meals or you won't keep the weight on. I also...

ARCHIVED Wanted: White Wedding Cake Recipe
gf4life replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Jessica, Have you tried to alter your wonderful yellow cake to be white? All you need to do to make it white is to use all egg whites instead of whole eggs. Your recipe calls for 4 eggs, so you would need 6 whites instead. If you decide to try it, then let us know how it turns out. You already know your yellow cake turns out great, so it is just... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Whole Family?
gf4life replied to azedazobollis's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was actually really relieved when all my kids came back positive, because it saved me from having to consider this issue. My husband is the only one who is not gluten-free. Our house is primarily gluten-free, and all the meals I cook are gluten-free. When my husband wants something with gluten he prepares it himself in his own set of cookware with his... -
ARCHIVED Capri Sun Gf...pacific Cooler?
gf4life replied to Sterndogg's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All the flavors of Capri-Sun are gluten-free. If you had a reaction it might be that something else in the products bothered you, but it wasn't gluten. My kids drink them all the time in their school lunches with no problems. God bless, Mariann
