ARCHIVED This May Well Be The Answer
gf4life replied to red345's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't have a problem with your theory, you are certainly entitled to it, but I do have a question. How was your mother diagnosed with Celiac? Was she blood/biopsy diagnosed? Does she have the genes? Just curious since you say she was nutritionally absorbing well, and she wasn't having weight problems, I was wondering how the doctors even got around... -
ARCHIVED Brach's Candy Corn
gf4life replied to Ruth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My kids and I have tried a few different candy corns (and pumpkins!), but we won't eat anything made from Brach's. I can't remember the brands we've tried, but we didn't have any reaction. If I can find out the names I will post them. Farley's is only good if it is a fresh batch. Sometimes tha bags sit there on the shelf too long and they are sort of... -

ARCHIVED Aleive
gf4life replied to jaycee30's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Aleve is gluten-free, but it can also be irritating, at least to me. I don't know if it is dairy free, so maybe that is what bothers me about it. Anyhow, it makes my intestines feel funny. I get this hot burning feeling as it moves through my small intestine. I found one website that says Aleve can aggrevate the symtpoms of microscopic colitis. I haven... -
ARCHIVED Flavoured Teas
gf4life replied to campcour's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use a lot of Celestial Seasonings Teas, since they clearly label (on the bottom of each box) GLUTEN FREE, for the flavors that are gluten-free. I have found quite a few teas with Barley added to them, so you do have to be careful. I just carry a small tin of tea bags in my purse, so if I want a hot tea (and I am unsure about a certain brand at a restaurant... -
ARCHIVED Med Bracelets?
gf4life replied to arismama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
arismama, With your daughter so young and not able to talk for herself, and the possiblity that she might need an EpiPen for the milk allergy, I think it might be a good idea. It can also help with young children in daycare and school to reinforce to the teachers and aides that it really is a medical issue and not just a dietary choice. I... -
ARCHIVED A Newbie
gf4life replied to Deb Cavanagh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The reality of it is that it might take more than a month back on gluten to cause damage enough to be seen in the biopsy. It is a personal decision, but personally I think it is barbaric to have to hurt yourself (or your child) just to get a diagnosis. I did it for myself and it was torture to have to go back on gluten. After two months I was horribly... -

ARCHIVED What To Do For Birthday?
gf4life replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sharon, We just had my son's 10th birthday party yesterday. We had about 20 guests. We served an entirely gluten-free meal to everyone, and they didn't even notice. This is our 3rd birthday party that has been completely gluten-free, but we tend to stick with the same food for them all, since we have had good luck with it: BBQ chicken (made with Sweet... -
ARCHIVED Enzymes....they Don't Make Me Feel Too Good
gf4life replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
celiac3270, Not all enzymes are gluten-free, and you should always check what the doctor prescribes, even if they are a celiac disease specialist. Doctors don't always know all the ingrdients in what they are prescribing. I checked out the Global Pharmaceuticals website and they list the product you are taking, but not the ingredients list. You may... -
This will be our second gluten-free Thanksgiving. We do all gluten-free for two reasons, the first being that I cook it all and the second simply to avoid contamination. The holidays are busy enough and I don't need a sick family! We haven't had a Thankgiving with family since we moved to another town (3 hrs away from them) because my husband always works...

ARCHIVED Pumpkin Pie/apple Pie Crust
gf4life replied to jaimek's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
kabowman, Have you ever tried the Spectrum Naturals Organic Vegetable Shortening. It is made from palm oil, so it is soy and corn free. It is non-hydrogenated and trans fat free, it is NOT the unhealthy palm kernel oil that everyone says is bad. It works just like Crisco for recipes and I have not noticed any difference in the taste. I buy mine at... -

ARCHIVED New Here With Questions
gf4life replied to kelscross's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Also, milk "allergy" and lactose intolerance is common in people (and children) who are gluten intolerant. I've heard that they are using the camera pill for diagnosing celiac disease, but I agree with Tiffany, I don't see how? Most doctors agree that a tissue sample biopsy is necessary for diagnosing and they can't do that with the camera. it might be... -
ARCHIVED Brain Functions
gf4life replied to cdobbs's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think Tiffany suggestion of having him see a phychiatrist is a good one. Also you might want to have him re-evaluated for nutritional deficiencies. There was probably a lot of damage done to his intestines, so chances are that he still might not be absorbing properly after six months. There are a lot of nutrient deficiencies that can affect mental... -
I would love to go, but my husband is very overprotective of the kids. It is totally unrelated to the fact that they are gluten intolerant, he is in law enforcement and was train to be suspicious of everyone! He was okay with them participating in the program at the conference, but the idea of them leaving with strangers and going swimming was out of the...

We were going to go and take the whole family. I was surprised when my husband decided we would go, since he isn't fully on board with the whole gluten-free lifestyle. He was interested in learning more though. He freaked out a little about the price, but the deciding factor ended up being the children's program. He was absolutely against the kids (ages...

ARCHIVED Mi-del "chocolate Sandwich Cookies"
gf4life replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The flour blend in them contains rice flour and they also have liquid whole eggs listed in the ingredients. My daughter likes them. I don't. I shouldn't eat them anyhow, since they have soy in them, but I don't think they taste like Oreo's at all. They look like them, but the cookie is not sweet at all and the filling is too sweet. I keep some on... -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Pie/apple Pie Crust
gf4life replied to jaimek's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I cheated and used the Comstock canned apple pie filling. I could make my own if I had a bit more time, but the Comstock pie fillings are gluten-free, so they work when you don't have the time to make homemade. I think I would precook the homemade filling before making turnovers, because they don't take long to cook that way. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Pie/apple Pie Crust
gf4life replied to jaimek's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
FreyaUSA, My family just went nuts over the apple turnovers! My oldest said they tasted like a mix of homemade and McDonald's apple pies. My younger son said they tasted just like McDonald's pie! Needless to say the treats went over really well. The tortilla press I have only cost me $6.99. It is made by Bene Casa, and is made of a high density... -
ARCHIVED Got Biopsy Results, Now Utterly Confused
gf4life replied to Killarney's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with Tiffany that you should have some allergy testing done. I am allergic to soy, but I can have soy bean oil and soy lecithin without any ill effects. I wouldn't recommend you try this without your doctors approval, since you seem to have severe reactions, but for most people allergic to soy, the oils are well tolerated. Which I am very thankful... -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Pie/apple Pie Crust
gf4life replied to jaimek's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This is the best pie crust I have made. It worked great! I used it for individual apple pies (like turnovers) and it actually held together enough to pick up the pie and eat it by hand! I used a tortilla press to shape the individual crusts and filled each one with a spoonful of apple pie filling, folded them over and pinched the sides together. The recipe... -
I have had reactions to some shaved ice flavorings. So be careful. What I do is I find a brand that I know is safe (Hawaiice and Rival brand are two that I know of) and I bring my own syrup with us when we know we are going someplace that has shaved ice. Then I just order the ice. I don't expect a discount, but I usually get one anyhow. This makes it...

ARCHIVED Questionairre-for Yuor Benifit
gf4life replied to the-proffessor's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
1.B -Savory would be my choice 2.F - Puff pastry. Very hard to duplicate in a gluten free variety, but would be a wonderful addition to the large amount of wonderful gluten-free goodies already available. 3.E - croissants that are soft and flaky like the "real" thing. Also battered fish and breaded chicken would be nice. 4.A - a higher price means... -
ARCHIVED Can Undiagnosed Celiac Cause Learning Disability?
gf4life replied to Sharon C.'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My oldest boy (5th grade) has problems with concentration in school. It has gotten much better since going gluten-free in April of this year, but it is not great yet. I don't know if it will ever be great. I think part of it is nutritional and part of it is personality. When my son gets his work done he gets great grades, but he doesn't always get it...
