  1. I have not found a female doctor that is any more understanding than the male doctors I have seem. In fact I have found at least 6 really good male doctors, of course almost all of them are pediatric doctors! My current Gastro-Intestinal specialist is a female and she is horrible. I just don't ever want to go back to her. You sound very similar to...
  2. The IgA plus T would probably be your total serum IgA. this test would show that you are not deficient in Immunoglobulin A, which would alther your other tests if you were deficient. It looks like a normal amount of IgA. The Ttg test is the Tissue Transglutaminase test to check for Celiac. This is apparently the most specific blood test for Celiac,...
  3. My oldest boy, who is now 10, had chicken pox when he was 3 yo. He broke out with a good sized patch of shingles on his abdomen this last spring. It was very painful, but we caught it early and was able to get him on some pain meds for the nerves. This was about a month and a half into being gluten-free. My middle boy, who is now 8, had chicken pox...
  4. I would say to try the diet and if she feels better then go with the doctors diagnosis. There are no "typical" celiac results. That is one of the many reasons it is a difficult diagnosis for doctors to make. The fact that she is positive on two out of three tests is a good indication that the tests may be right. You would have to try the diet to see if...
  5. We like the Nut Thins. In my local SaveMart store they are with the nuts near the popcorn and other snacks, two aisles away from the crackers. So don't stop looking if you don't find them with the crackers. God bless, Mariann
  6. Some of the hardest people to convince that the diet needs to be adhered to very strictly are the ones who know about gluten intolerance/celiac disease and think it is no big deal. Before we were diagnosed I only knew of one other person in town who has it. He gets DH really bad, but he won't stick to the diet because he 'doesn't have problems with his...
  7. I personally never felt better until I got all the gluten out of the house. I was actually relieved when all three of my kids came back positive and needed the same diet. Theoretically you could still touch the wheat flour and not have a reaction. Be careful of the dust in the air from the flour and also clean all surfaces really well after you are...
  8. My GI specialist actually admitted to me that a lot of her IBS patients put themselves on the gluten-free diet and feel better. Hmmm...what would this suggest? She says that she has only seen about 5 true Celiacs in her practice. The way she defines a true Celiac is total absence of villi. I tried explaining to her that the beginning of damage is still...
  9. Then yes, she is very small for her age and like I said it wouldn't hurt to have her tested. You already have to follow the diet, so it would be easier for her to follow it as well. God bless, Mariann
  10. If you can't find the Blue Diamond Nut Thins in the cracker aisle, try looking near the nuts and popcorn. This is where I find them at our local small town store. We like them. I haven't found any other crackers at the regular stores. I buy some at Whole Foods when I am in the city, and I shop online a lot. God bless, Mariann
  11. You didn't mention how old your daughter is, but I figured older than 5. It wouldn't hurt to get her tested. A needle-free way of testing for gluten intolerance is to go through Enterolab. You might even be able to get a doctor to order if, since you can't use needles on her. It might help when trying to get it covered by insurance. They do a stool...
  12. I have used enzymes now since going gluten-free for good in January. I was very ill after my two month gluten challenge and could hardly digest anything except rice and small amounts of chicken. Certainly not fruits and veggies! Enzymes really saved me. My favorite is Pioneer brand Digestive Enzymes and Herbs. They are clearly marked gluten-free...
  13. I was diagnosed IBS when I was 16. That was 16 years ago and the doctor did nothing but listen to my symptoms, push around on my belly and send me home. No tests, no meds, no special diet, nothing. I was told I just had to learn to live with it. I temporarily seemed to get better, although it never went completely away, then after I got married and pregnant...
  14. Has anyone here used these yet? I haven't found them in any local stores in my area, and from what I can tell they are new. I was just wondering if they are any good. I just ordered a bag from an online store ($2.79 for a bag of 8 tortillas) and I hope they are good. I would love to be able to easily prepare burritos and cinnamon crisps again! Open...
  15. I find it easier to buy the mustard in the squeeze bottle. You might still have to teach your housemates not to let the tip of the bottle touch the bread, but it makes for less risk of contamination. We use French's.
  16. Also, the HLA test being negative only means that he doesn't have either of the two main genes that they know are connected to Celiac Disease. They have not done enough genetic studies to know if they have found ALL of the genes responsible for celiac disease. They only know that about 95%(or something like that, I can't recall they exact number) of people...

    ARCHIVED Coffee

I personally have not been able to handle coffee, even the gluten-free ones with 100% dairy free creamer. I don't know what it is in coffee that doesn't agree with me. I am able to take headache pills with added caffeine, so I doubt that the caffeine is the problem...
  18. I'm so glad you found one. I put a golf ball sized ball of dough in between two small pieces of waxed paper and pressed it until it was about the size of a corn tortilla. It was pretty thin, but if you are gentle with the dough then it won't break. Just have fun with it. I did. I haven't gotten around to making more, but I plan to use this crust for...
  19. I have not been able to figure out much from an elimination diet. I guess I am just too busy to keep accurate enough records...I am allergic to soy. which I found out from a RAST bloodtest for the top 8 allergens. I wish they had tested me for more, since I suspect other foods are causing a reaction. My reaction to soy is total body itching. It is most...
  20. My kids eat these occasionally, but prefer the Malt-O-Meal brand Fruity Dino Bites and Cocoa Dino Bites. I buy the Pebbles cereal when we can't get the Malt-O-Meal brand, but they don't like the texture as much, so the box tends to last a while. The Malt-O-Meal kind is thicker and crunchier, and the Post brand is more like a tiny flake, and not as crunchy...
  21. Hi Angela, Your question about if you need a second opinion or not really depends. Are you questioning the validity of the bloodtests? Are you thinking that it might be wrong? It is a slim possiblity, but if you have symptoms and have previously been diagnosed IBS then the likelyhood of it being celiac disease is pretty high. You might want to...
  22. Soymage VEGAN cheese is casein free, but it is certainly NOT cheese. It doesn't taste anything like cheese. I tried the "cheddar" on an omelet. I don't think I will do that again... I do have some "mozzarella" flavored and was going to try it with some gluten-free lasagna, and possibly try some on a bread pizza like you guys make. I just don't want to...
  23. Don't really want to cause more confusion, but I thought I should point out that a positive IgA antigliadin test shows a reaction to gliadin(gluten), negative IgA tTg and EMA mean that the damage to the intestine is not severe enough to be called celiac, but your allergist is correct that it could be an intolerance to wheat (or gluten) and just not full blown...
  24. I just bought a bunch of gluten-free flours from Ener-G online store. Most of the flours ended up being about $2 a pound, which is not that bad considering how much I was paying in the healthfood stores and even Bob's Red Mill in the regular grocery store (when I can find it) cost more than that. I ordered 5 lbs of white rice flour and it came in 5 1-lb...
  25. Open Original Shared Link You can view all of their products at the above website. I haven't tried them, but they looked interesting. I might try them if I could find them in a store. I hate spending shipping on products I haven't tried. The MiDel cookies bother some people. For me it is the soy flour and the bean flour in them that bother me. ...
