ARCHIVED For Those Of You Who Check Shampoos
gf4life replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have DH and get it first on my scalp. I have been using Suave for years and after going gluten-free the DH went away and has stayed away except for the occasional gluten accident. Never had a problem with Suave. I did have problems with many other shampoos before I knew about gluten, now I know why! I don't buy any shampoos that have any wheat derivatives... -
ARCHIVED Good Tasting And Healthy Snack Bars
gf4life replied to Roo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Two bars that have not been mentioned yet are: Glutino Breakfast Bars, try the apple and blueberry (they are sort of like fig newtons), but skip the chocolate (they taste awful). Gluten Solutions rice protein bars. We like the Chocolate Mint, Double Chocolate and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip. Some of the bars are sold under the Aunt Candice label... -
I use Internet Explorer and it is "reload" instead of refresh, but it works the same way.

ARCHIVED The New Layout Of The Site
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Thanks guys. Now that I resized it to 1024x768 I'm going to need magnifying glasses to read the posts! Even with my glasses on! It is so darn small. So now I can see the whole screen and the ad doesn't cover it, but I can hardly read the words! God bless, Mariann -
I'm having problems when I post my messages. The bar on the right side of the screen covers where I am typing, so I can't see if I am spelling things correctly! This is frustrating for me, since there is no spell check and I prefer to spell correctly when I can. Does anyone else have problems with this? I know the ads need to be here, but do they have...

ARCHIVED Self-diagnosis And Being Taken Seriously
gf4life replied to lotusgem's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
lotusgem, I am technically a self-diagnosed celiac. I do have a diagnosis from Enterolab, but since that is not yet accepted throughout the medical field, I consider my self to be self-diagnosed. Anyhow, I wanted to share my experience. I recently had surgery that required a hospital stay. Needless to say, I was worried about the food situation. The... -
My son has run high fevers (up to 105.1) all his life. A year ago when he was 7 he was diagnosed by an infectious disease specialist with a periodic fever disease called FMF (Familial Mediteranean Fever). But since we started him on the gluten-free diet the same month that we started him on the medication for the fever disease, they are going to take him...

I ignore them. I have found that when I try to explain to them what gluten/dairy did to me they didn't really want to know. They have already decided that it wasn't real, it is "all in my head". So who cares. It's my body and I have to take care of it. Some people (especially family members) have started asking me questions. They still don't really...

ARCHIVED Anemia & Iron Deficiency
gf4life replied to debjocc's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Most people do recover from the anemia, but others need a bit of extra help. I know that when I first went gluten-free I was feeling low. I don't have an official diagnosis, so I did not have doctors testing my various nutrient levels... but I had never been able to donate blood since my iron was always low. The doctors always said I was borderline anemic... -
ARCHIVED Going Off A Gf Diet In Order To Get Accurate Dx
gf4life replied to KarenAnne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That is true. The gene test if available through Prometheus labs (in combination with the blood tests), also available separately through Enterolab, and Kimball Labs. It will only tell you if you have the genes to support the disease, it will not tell you if you actually have the disease, since some people carry the gene but never get sick from the disease... -
ARCHIVED My Tests Results Are In
gf4life replied to FaithInScienceToo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The colonoscopy is a good thing to have, but it can't tell you either way if you have Celiac or not. They would have to do an endoscopy/small intestinal biopsy down the esphagus and through the stomach. And you would need to have been on gluten for about 3-6 months prior to the endoscopy for that to even have a chance at being accurate. Even then there... -
ARCHIVED Shopping List
gf4life replied to KLTerry's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link Here is another good list. Remember to always double check the ingredients, since they change sometimes and no list is 100% accurate, but they are there to serve as a guideline when you shop. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Frustrated Mom
gf4life replied to Kelsey's Mom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
These are the tests that need to be done, preferrably by a reliable lab like Prometheus (which is where I got this list). Open Original Shared Link Please print out the list and take it to your doctor. They need to make sure that they order ALL of them, since most people are only positive on a few of the blood tests. Rarely is a person positive on all... -
ARCHIVED Going Off A Gf Diet In Order To Get Accurate Dx
gf4life replied to KarenAnne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I went back on gluten for two months to get a biopsy, which ended up being negative. While I don't recommend it, you need to do what you feel is best for you and your son. I agree with Richard that one slice of bread might not be enough. I was heavily eating gluten daily (something like 6-8 slices of bread daily for two months) and it was not enough... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy
gf4life replied to TLymanP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a doctor who didn't want to find any damage. She only took 3 samples and did not go very far into my intestines. She did not look for damaged spots, and I have a feeling that she would have taken the samples from a normal looking area, just to confirm her diagnosis of IBS...I hate feeling like this about her, but she absolutely refuses to accept that... -
ARCHIVED Complete List Of Symptoms?
gf4life replied to anerissara's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I attempted to access that "complete" list that was being refered to in the research study that said 1 in 133 have celiac disease. The excuse I got was that the list is outdated as soon as it is printed, it is always changing, and so they won't allow public access to it. Blah, blah, blah... I personally think it would be a public service to allow... -
ARCHIVED What Supplements Do You Take?
gf4life replied to Karina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Okay, I've been doing some research. It seems you CAN take the probiotics during the course of the antibiotics, BUT you should space them out. It says to take them as many hours apart as possible. So right now I am taking the antibiotic once a day around noon, after lunch, since they upset my stomach. So if I take the probiotics at night, when I go to... -
ARCHIVED What Supplements Do You Take?
gf4life replied to Karina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had a question for those of you who use probiotics. I have been using them since about December after a rather long hectic course of multiple types of antibiotics that really tore up my insides. I hate taking antibiotics, but I had a bladder infection followed by a very persisitent staph infection and it took 3 kinds to kill that one! Well now I recently... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results Question
gf4life replied to Bailey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nicole, My children were 4 (a month shy of being 5), 7 and 9 when they went on the gluten-free diet. All of them had spent the two years previous hearing me talk about gluten and the testing I was doing for myself. They knew when I had them tested that they might possibly have to go on the diet, and in fact had already tried many gluten-free foods,... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results Question
gf4life replied to Bailey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the problem with casein is two-fold. First it is similar in molecular structure to gluten and your body might be confusing it with gluten, thus causing a reaction. Second, even minor (and virtually invisible) damage in the intestines could cause the milk proteins to leak and cause a reaction. There hasn't been much research done on the subject... -
ARCHIVED Will My Kids Have Cd Too?
gf4life replied to newby's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As far as the pregnancy goes, you are at an advantage. You have already been diagnosed and have started the diet. You should be healthier for it and that is great for the baby. As far as the chances of your children getting celiac disease, there is a pretty good chance they will at least be a carrier, but the advantage is that you can keep them gluten... -
ARCHIVED Non Dairy/non Soy Butter
gf4life replied to jknnej's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ener-g Egg Replacer contains the following ingredients: Potato Starch, Tapioca Flour, Leavening (Calcium Lactate*, Calcium Carbonate, Citric Acid), Cellulose Gum, Carbohydrate Gum. *There is a note on it that says Calcium lactate is NOT derived from dairy. It does not contain lactose. It appears that it doesn't contain soy. The product is really... -
At our church I have the option of just taking the wine (grape juice in it's own little individual cup) or I can bring my own gluten-free "host". Sometimes I remember it, other times I don't. I just pass on the host when I forget to bring it. I hold onto my own host the entire time. It never goes into the communal dish, since at our church the host and...

ARCHIVED Malt-o-meal Cereal No Longer Going To Be Gf !
gf4life replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you Jessica for the information. We use 3 out of 4 of this brand of gluten-free cereals. We have never found the puffed rice, but the kids like the sugared cereals anyhow. They are a nice treat for them. I will be terribly disappointed if/when they do actually change them. I will call. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Dh?
gf4life replied to grannynanny's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It could be DH. My scalp is the first place I started getting them, many years ago. It is also the first place I break out when I have gotten a large amount of gluten. What I mean by a large amount is more than just the tiny bit of cross-contamination, where the food actually contained an unknown source of gluten. This doesn't happen to me often, but...
