ARCHIVED Flaxmeal
gf4life replied to FreyaUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree that flax is very healthy and I am not saying don't use it, but I am saying to be aware of any possible side effects. This is true of any supplements that are not ordinarily a part of your diet. Certainly the benefits are more common than the negative effects, but they are there. I use flax with no problems. But I have yet to give it to my kids... -
I plan on making a cornbread stuffing this year. Last year I practiced making a gluten-free Thanksgiving meal, even though we weren't gluten-free yet, and we just didn't have any stuffing. I would like some this year. With cornbread stuffing you just prepare a corn bread recipe and then you crumble the cornbread up after it cools and add it to the...

ARCHIVED Best Gf Pasta?
gf4life replied to dmchr4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tinkyada brown rice pasta-all flavors! We love those. They sell pretty much all different shapes you can think of and they always taste great, have a great texture, and are most like the wheat pasta we were so used to. We buy them at Whole Foods, and online at Gluten Free Pantry, and Gluten Solutions. -
ARCHIVED Going Dairy Free
gf4life replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've been dairy free for over a year now, and my kids for about 9 months. We have pretty much tried all the above choices. I can't say that I have all the answers, but here is what works for us. My kids don't like soy milk and I am allergic to soy, but Silk was the best one we tried. No one at my house really liked the rice milks. They were too watery... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results
gf4life replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
All 4 of us in my family have tested gluten sensitive and casein sensitive with the Enteorlab tests. The Enterolabs do not tell you if you have Celiac Disease. They define all positive results as Gluten Sensitivity. In a paper I read by Dr. Fine he states that to him a sensitivity and an intolerance are the same thing. Conventional medicine has decided... -
ARCHIVED Holiday Time Of Year Again
gf4life replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree with Richard. I have not found any chicken or turkey that has "hidden" gluten. On all the ones I have found gluten, they tend to be the seasoned ones (not just broth added) and clearly list gluten. I DO tend to buy from companies that clearly label their meats gluten free. I appreciate their effort in making our shopping easier, so I buy from... -
ARCHIVED Potty Training
gf4life replied to DawnM's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So sorry to hear he has the flu. I hope he gets over it very quickly and life can get back to normal for you guys. God bless, Mariann -
Hi Tracy, I'm sorry to hear that it is CF. At least you know what it is though. We will keep you in our prayers. God bless, Mariann
-
Tiffany, That sounds about right. I must have got lucky and got some that wasn't contaminated. I just eliminate oats right along with the rest. I'd rather be on the safe side, than risk getting glutened!
-
Most Celiacs do avoid oats. The problem with oats is that only a few people react to the form of gluten (protein) in oats, but oats are often contaminated with wheat, either in the field or in the harvesting/processing. So in the USA all brands of oats are considered contaminated and it is eat-at-your-own-risk. I personally can live without oats. The...

ARCHIVED Grits?
gf4life replied to sashabetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We use Alber's Enriched Hominy Quick Grits. They are distributed by Nestle USA. (1-800-432-9371 Open Original Shared Link ) They are just ground white corn enriched with vitamins. It even has a Cheese Grits Casserole Recipe on the back of the box (at least it does on all the boxes I've every seen). It is also the only brand of grits I can find in my... -
ARCHIVED 8 Yo Daughter Seems To Need Lots Of Sleep
gf4life replied to dmchr4's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Why doesn't the doctor want her tonsils out. Sleep problems, chronic enlargement and snoring together make her fit into the criteria required for surgery to remove them. Some of her sleep problems could be from gluten, and that might get a little better with the diet, but some of it might be sleep apnea caused from her tonsils. She may be waking up because... -
ARCHIVED Fear Of Cancer
gf4life replied to bklyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
As long as you don't have cancer now, sticking to the gluten-free diet is the best thing you can do to prevent any cancer from forming. If you do not eat gluten-free then you increase your risks of developing intestinal cancer, but once you are gluten-free your risks are about the same as the rest of the population. There is always going to be that risk... -
ARCHIVED Digestive Enzymes Safe?
gf4life replied to christtheking's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
They are safe if they are gluten-free. Make sure you get a good gluten-free brand. My favorite is Pioneer Brand Digestive Enzymes and Herbs. I haven't had bad side effects from taking them, but I know others have. don't know what they side effects are though. They work different than Tums, so I wouldn't compare the two. Digestive enzymes work best... -
ARCHIVED Mayo, Mayo, Mayo
gf4life replied to christtheking's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Flaxmeal
gf4life replied to FreyaUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
About 5 years ago my husband had what is called gynecomastia (sp?). This is where the excess in estrogen caused him to start developing fatty tissue on his breast in the nipple area. Basically he was getting large breasts. (He wants large muscles in that area, but not fatty tissue! )The doctor was the one who told him it was caused by an excess of estrogen... -
ARCHIVED Flaxmeal
gf4life replied to FreyaUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was the one who mentioned it. I recently read an article in the paper that said they were doing a study where they were giving flaxmeal inn large doses to women who had has hysterectomys , paired with women on hormone replacement and they had the same relief of symptoms. Flax is evidently high in estrogen (as are soybeans and soy products), but I believe... -
ARCHIVED Muscle Pain?
gf4life replied to anglepoise's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to have a lot of daily muscle pain. I would take Tylenol for it at bedtime if I couldn't sleep. Since going gluten-free this last January much of that pain has gone a way. The only major problem I still have is my knees and hips. I was diagnosed with Bursitis 16 years ago and they bother me a lot when the temperature is going to drop by at... -
ARCHIVED Ener-g Tapioca Bread
gf4life replied to Racheleona's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I only buy breads made by Kinnikinnick. I buy directly from their website. Shipping is a flat fee of $10.00, so I buy a lot to save on shipping. Since I am feeding four in my family and I also get some for a friend who has a daughter who is gluten-free, I tend to go through a lot of bread/donuts/pizza crust anyhow. The products are mailed frozen overnight... -
ARCHIVED Teriyaki Style Marinade
gf4life posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was looking at sauces for my husband the other day. He is not gluten-free, but I find myself reading labels on everything anyhow. I came acrossed one that looked gluten-free. I bought it figuring if it wasn't gluten-free I could just cook my husbands food in it. Well I checked their website and it states that both of their marinade sauces are gluten... -
ARCHIVED Potty Training
gf4life replied to DawnM's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry. For both of you. It must be extremely frustrating for both you and your son. Have you discussed this with his doctor? And could he possibly have other food issues, like maybe dairy. If he reacted to the Pediasure with 5 loose BM's, then maybe he isn't tolerating dairy well. I know that I react to dairy with lots of gas, bloating and... -
ARCHIVED Newbie - If Not Celiacs, Then What? +blood Results
gf4life replied to dmchr4's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
FreyaUSA, I don't know if any of the other kids who had shingles had the chicken pox or the vaccine. I could try to find out. For my own kids, my two boys had gotten the chicken pox early on (ages 3 & 1), and then my daughter got the chicken pox from my oldest son's shingles outbreak, only a week before she was due to have the vaccine at her... -
ARCHIVED Newbie - If Not Celiacs, Then What? +blood Results
gf4life replied to dmchr4's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The celiac rash is called Dermatitis Herpetiformis. But I have never heard of it being related to Herpes Zoster. The only reason it is called herpetiformis is because the rash appears "herpes like" in the way it looks, but not in the actual disease. I always thought shingles was rare in children too, but I have actually met a lot of people who have... -
ARCHIVED Potty Training
gf4life replied to DawnM's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You might not like what I have to say, but I will say it anyhow...get rid of the diapers and DON'T give him one. I know it is hard because of the celiac disease and the bowel issues that come with it, but he is old enough and has to just figure it out. The doctor can help you with some medication or laxatives if he indeed does become so constipated that...
