ARCHIVED Alpen Snack Bars
gf4life replied to clayplaylady's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Anne, I think you are talking about Alpsnacks. They are great. I buy them by the dozen at Gluten Solutions. I haven't found them anywhere else, but I'm sure other places sell them. You can find them at the following link: Open Original Shared Link God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Trying To Sort Out Symptoms
gf4life replied to Jennifer M.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Jennifer, You could avoid the whole needle thing by checking into the tests at Enterolab. Since you would be paying out of pocket anyhow, they are cheaper that the blood tests (at least if you want the blood tests done at a reputable lab that knows about Celiac Disease). You can find out more intormation at Open Original Shared Link They offer... -
ARCHIVED Question About Tummy Aches
gf4life replied to Jennifer M.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The delayed reaction is what takes people (and their doctors) so long to figure out that it is gluten that is causing their reaction. For me it is usually the next day, or late at night if it was something I ate in the morning. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Dh?
gf4life replied to Jennifer M.'s topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
The dry, scaly patches might be psoriasis. DH is more blistery, and for most people the blisters pop and ooze. I have both. I only get the DH when I have a gluten accident, but I've had problems with psoriasis on my elbow, ankle, and scalp for years. I would ask the doctor about it if I were you. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Is There A Jra/celiac Connection?
gf4life replied to HeidiLeigh29's topic in Related Issues & Disorders

ARCHIVED Children's Results Are In
gf4life replied to lisa922's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Lisa, You certainly do not have to put the kids on the gluten-free diet if they are not having a problem with gluten. It is 100% your choice. I did not put my kids on the diet until I knew for sure that they were having a reaction to gluten. But you would not be causing your kids to become sensitive to gluten by taking them off gluten. They would... -
ARCHIVED Failure To Thrive In Celiac Child
gf4life replied to lilleroy family's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow, I am so sorry both of you and your children are having to go through so much. I have an 8 year old who is gluten/casein intolerant and has other health problems, he is only 53 lbs.! I'm surprised that they are considering your child "failure to thrive". It must be that she can't keep the weight on. My son has actually gained 5 lbs and 3/4 of... -
ARCHIVED Children's Results Are In
gf4life replied to lisa922's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Lisa, Keep in mind that there are other forms of gluten intolerance than Celiac. We have two of each in our family. My 8 year old is not Celiac(does not have either gene), but is gluten intolerant and he had the most damage in his intestines. He sees about 5 different specialists for all his health problems and his immunologist says he does not want... -
ARCHIVED Need Input
gf4life replied to deb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Deb, I felt the same as you. I had to have something in writing in front of me to prove to me that I really had a problem with gluten. I knew I would never be able to stay gluten free forever without it. I would start feeling better and then convince myself that it was "all in my head" and go back on gluten occasionally. I didn't want to play those... -
ARCHIVED Support Group In Idaho?
gf4life replied to byuiemily's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The only ones I found listed are on the western border of Idaho. Nowhere near you! Have you concidered starting a group there? It could include people other than from school. Just put up message around town in places where other celiacs might be and eventually you'll get a group together. There are probably quite a few people who would love to join... -
ARCHIVED Need Input
gf4life replied to deb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Deb, Sorry I didn't get right back to you, but Enterolab does stool tests and a cheek swab gene test. They do NOT do blood tests. As for the insurance issue, some people have gotten reimbursed by their insurance company, but it varies with the different insurance companies. I have had luck with some of my children's doctors accepting... -
ARCHIVED Need Input
gf4life replied to deb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Deb, The small bowel series is a series of x-rays. It will not show Celiac. The stomach scope they did before is what they do for the biopsy. They need to take tissue samples from your small intestines. It doesn't sound like they did that during the previous scope. Mine didn't either and I had to do it again to get the biopsies, which ended up... -
ARCHIVED Help With Results Pls
gf4life replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Most doctors would say the results are negative and not test further, others are willing to do the biopsy just to be sure. All three of my kids tested similar to your daughter. All had positive IGG only, negative on everything else. While waiting for the follow-up appointment (two months later) I had the kids tested through Enterolab. All three tested... -
ARCHIVED Where Do I Start?
gf4life replied to chasesmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
At Enterolab you do not need a doctors order for the tests. You can order them yourself. Also, most insurance won't pay up front for it, you have to pay out of pocket, but some insurance will reimburse you after the fact. You might want to check with your new insurance when it goes through. My kids were never really "underweight", although I could see... -
ARCHIVED Where Do I Start?
gf4life replied to chasesmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you considered genetic testing? I would recommend testing through Enterolab, since it is cheaper for the gene test, and they also test for other genes related to gluten intolerance, and not just Celiac Disease. We have two of each in our family(so far, my husband hasn't been tested yet), two Celiacs and two who are gluten intolerant without Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Breastfeeding
gf4life replied to taneil's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I breastfed all three of my children between 17-19 months each. They did not seem to have any delayed growth or diarrhea problems during this time, but once they were on solids and getting gluten in their diets their growth suddenly dropped from the 95th percentile to the 5th percentile. My daughter had some projectile vomiting and until going gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Jello Or Pudding
gf4life replied to AmyandSabastian's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't use Soymilk anyhow, but it is good to know that it won't set. I don't want to use the almond milk we drink for pudding, since it does have a strong almond taste and the kids don't want the pudding to taste like almonds. I thought I might try Mocha Mix. I make a milk alternative for baking and such with it at a mix of 1/4 Mocha Mix and 3/4 water... -
ARCHIVED Help With Baking Cakes
gf4life replied to justmel74's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Mel, I get my cake mix from Open Original Shared Link . It is the best mix I have tried. I do admit that I have not tried all the available cake mixes out there. The one celiac3270 recommended is another one that I may try in the future. And yes the mix is dairy free as well. God bless, Mariann -
I can totally relate to the mood changes during a gluten accident. I got some gluten accidently during my sons birthday dinner on the 10th. He chose the restaurant from our list of "safe" choices, and I tried something that should have been gluten-free (at least by ingredients) and the waiter seems very confident that my meal would be safe. I figured it...

ARCHIVED 14 Month Gf 3 Weeks
gf4life replied to TrixieMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Trixie, Welcome to the board! My three kids and I are gluten intolerant. My daughter had some reflux problems and those have cleared up since going gluten-free last April. My boys both have asthma, but since it is controled with medication I have yet to have them re-evaluated to see if they can stop the meds. We are all also dairy free which seems... -
ARCHIVED Jello Or Pudding
gf4life replied to AmyandSabastian's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kozy Shack even lists on the package that it is gluten free. We tried some the other day, but the dairy caused a lot of my symptoms to return, so I think 6 months off dairy wasn't enough. celiac3270 you are smart to stay off dairy. I'm back to dairy free and was wondering about Jello pudding and if it possible to make it with any milk alternatives. It... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Daughter
gf4life replied to LeeV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Lee, Welcome to the board! First I want to reassure you that yes, it is normal for her to still have diarrhea. It can take a while to heal and for the intestines to start absorbing properly again, and also she is probably not 100% gluten free yet. There is so much to learn in dealing with this disease and learning all the places where gluten can... -
ARCHIVED Help With Baking Cakes
gf4life replied to justmel74's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi Mel, I have had similar experience with baking cakes (pre & post gluten-free), and always tended to use a box mix. I was so happy to find the cakes by Really Great Food Co.. Their chocolate cake mix is absolutely wonderful! Since I started using their cake I never have any leftovers from birthday parties. I have to limit how often I make a... -
ARCHIVED Doritos
gf4life replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
FritoLay also lists "milk" on the label if that flavor has milk, so it is easier for those of us on gluten/dairy free diets. I have not had a problem with cross-contamination with the chips. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Irish Heritage And Celiac's
gf4life replied to Queen Serenity's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am English, Welsh, Dutch, German, French, and American Indian (that I know of, there may be more). I'm not sure about any Irish, but all my relatives on my mom's side are gone and that's where the celiac disease would have come from, so I can't ask any of them. That was most of the Welsh, Dutch, and French. Possible some Irish or Scottish. It's kind of...
