ARCHIVED What Does This Mean?
gf4life replied to GinaMarie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You should ask for a copy of the test results. Then you can check to see what test they ran and what the actual numbers are. It doesn't sound like it was one of the antibody tests, unless she was horribly in error and it really was in the 300's which would be a very high positive. Until you know exactly which test it was then you can't really know what... -
ARCHIVED Not Always The Gluten
gf4life replied to KayJay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Gillian, For the first two days the pain was located in my stomach (so I thought the stomach virus), but after two days it moved down into my intestines and now it is horrible gut pain and a lot of gas. This lower pain and gas is typical for me with a gluten accident, and since the peanut butter incident is the only time I ate something I didn't prepare... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab
gf4life replied to concernedlady's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Don't count on being able to get a deduction for this. You have to have more than 7.5% of your income as medical enpenses and then they only deduct the portion over 7.5%. My family of 5 never even came close to the 7.5% even though we have a lot of doctor copays, medication copays, dental bills, eyeglass/contacts/vision bills, and the Enterolab testing... -
ARCHIVED Not Always The Gluten
gf4life replied to KayJay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For me it was the opposite. I am so careful about gluten that when I got sick with horrible stomach pain, nausea, exhaustion, dizziness and low-grade fever, I thought I had gotten the stomach virus that has been going around. I thought this was confirmed when my son started throwing up that night. Well everyone else got over it in less than 24 hours, after... -
ARCHIVED Where Do You Order Online?
gf4life replied to mat4mel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ellen, I agree with you about Kinnikinnicks ready-made pizza crusts. My daughter and I really enjoyed eating them. It had been so long since we had pizza. Neither of us even missed having cheese on it! We just spread some gluten-free pasta sauce on top and put pepperoni on it and baked it. It was so good. My boys (who never eat pizza, only pizza crust... -
Hi Molly, It is not fun having your tonsils out when you are a teenager. I had mine out when I was 15. I recommend you stock up on losts of soft gluten-free foods. It will be better for you to have them out though. Hopefully your apnea will improve or go completely away! You will be in my prayers on Thursday. God bless, Mariann

ARCHIVED New 'safe' Food List,
gf4life replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Kelly, Most people do have Adobe Acrobat on their computer. You will need that to open the file. Once you click on the link it should open up in a new window, but depending on the speed of your computer it may take a few minutes to open up the file. It is quite large (49pgs!). I hope this helps. Also they updated the list and have a new link... -
ARCHIVED Overwealmed
gf4life replied to MaryanneQ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wellshire Farms (formerly Yorkshire Farms?) is the maker of the gluten-free chicken nuggets that Kim mentioned. Many Whole Foods carry them as a regular item, but my local Whole Foods can't (or won't ) get them for me. They are dinosaur shaped nuggets. I would like to try them out on my kids before trying to get a whole case shipped to me! Shirley... -
ARCHIVED Somebody Please Help With Test Results!
gf4life replied to mat4mel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately it could mean a lot of things. Their IgG could be elevated for other reasons, or they could be in the pre-Celiac stage of gluten intolerance and have not yet gotten enough damage to their intestines for the IgA antibody levels to be higher, or they could have non-celiac gluten intolerance, which is less severe than Celiac, but still needs the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten/wheat/egg Free Diet Questions?
gf4life replied to ConcernedMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The link that ConcernedMom posted is based out of the United Kingdom. In the UK the Celiac Society there has approved WHEAT STARCH for use by Celiacs. They say the gluten has been removed in the processing and so it is safe. It is basically a similar issue as with Oats. A question of whether you want to risk it or not. In the US the Celiac groups here... -
ARCHIVED New 'safe' Food List,
gf4life replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
mat4mel, We eat the Cream of Rice. It is a little bland, so you have to add something for flavor, like cinnamon or fruit or something. We also like Rice & Shine brown rice hot cereal by Arrowhead Mills. It has more flavor and texture. One of my kids likes it a lot (he says it tastes like oatmeal), one likes it sometimes, the other doesn't like... -
ARCHIVED Specialty Flavoring Syrups--torani
gf4life replied to MIddings's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Also ask about the caramel color and the vanilla extract. Most are gluten-free, but not all, so it would be good to check since you need to ask about the natural flavorings. Let us know what you find out. God bless, Mariann -

ARCHIVED Overwealmed
gf4life replied to MaryanneQ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
First thing you need to do is stop what your are doing and take a deep breath... Okay, now you need to get a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side of the paper make a list of all the things the kids and you normally eat. Include all the fruits, veggies, meats, desserts and prepackaged items. Then start crossing out the ones that... -
Sleep apnea is one of the few reasons for removing tonsils these days, chronic infection and diseased tonsils are the other reasons. See if you can get to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist. A good ENT will be able to tell you if they think having your tonsils out might improve your apnea. God bless, Mariann

ARCHIVED Where Do You Order Online?
gf4life replied to mat4mel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy my pasta at Whole Foods. Never bought it online. I get most of my flour at Whole Foods, too, but I have bought some from Open Original Shared Link and from the Open Original Shared Link . I only buy Open Original Shared Link breads. They are supposed to be frozen, since they don't have any preservatives in them to keep them fresh on the... -
dasieydday76, They did not say they had gluten in them, right? They just said they couldn't "guarantee" that they were gluten free. That is because some of their ingredients may come from other suppliers and they may not want to risk legal action (some people are sue crazy!) by giving you information they cannot verify 100%. This does NOT mean they...

Sorry, I live in California, so I can't help with the doctor question, but I wanted to say the same thing happens to me when I go to the doctor ai forget most of what I wanted to talk to them about. My advice: WRITE IT DOWN. This is the only thing that has helped me to remember all those things I don't want to forget. Especially when you are meeting a...

ARCHIVED How Do You Treat Diarrhea?
gf4life replied to crackrick's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you tried any Pepto Bismol? It helps me when I have severe diarrhea. If it is only mild I tend to go without medication, but if it is interefering with your sleep and such, then you might want to try some. Thomas had a lot of good advice, and also it takes a bit longer than a week for the symptoms to start improving in most people. Especially... -
If you go to Whole Foods you can get a cake mix or a brownie mix. The are much easier to work with than trying a dessert from scratch if you aren't used to baking. Also you can get some rice cracker snacks and cookies that are gluten-free. Popcorn is always a good gluten-free snack food, too. I hope you have a great time at the party! God bless,...

ARCHIVED How Long?
gf4life replied to flagbabyds's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Everytime I read about another person getting diagnosed I am happy, because it means that doctors are starting to recognise Celiac Disease! And the more people who have it who get diagnosed, the better for all of us! They get to have a chance to be healthy and we all benefit from more people requesting gluten free info from companies and restraunts! This... -
Hi Molly, Two of my three kids have had sleep apnea. Both were caused by chronically enlarged tonsils. My son has been fine with his sleep since he had his tonsils out 2 1/2 years ago and my daughter will have her tonsils out next month. I am hoping this will help her. Have you had your tonsils looked at? My middle son does not have sleep apnea...

Take some things that you can pick up at your grocery store. What kinds of food are they serving. We could probably help you put together enough food of similar gluten-free alternatives that you would not feel out of place. Also when is the party, so we know how long you have to prepare for it? Here are some examples of things you can get almost...

ARCHIVED General Mills
gf4life replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ALL of the general mills fruit snacks (roll-ups, gushers, fruit-by-the foot, character shapes, etc) are gluten-free. The only ones that are NOT gluten-free are the new twistables, that look like fruit licorice with colored twists around them. They have something in it that contains gluten. Can't remember what. General Mills is good about labeling if it...
