ARCHIVED Question Regarding Non-gi Type Symptoms
gf4life replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You may have some other nutritional deficiencies that got worse when you cut certain foods out of your diet. I don't know what they haveto do to test for it but try to get them to test your mineral levels, like calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc. I have been reading a lot about minerals lately and have been checking on liquid ones that are more easily absorbed... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Rice Milk? Other Problems
gf4life replied to VAGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Phil, I am allergic to soy, so I don't use soy milk anymore for myself. At the doctor insistance I bought some for my kids. The doctor did warn me that they might be soy intolerant as well as gluten and dairy. One out of three of my kids gets a bad stomachache after drinking the soy milk. By the third day he was rolling on the floor in pain and... -
I think it has been almost two weeks since she posted, but she did say in her posts about Gallbladder disease and pancreatitis that she was going to Wisconsin to visit family and she was going to try to see a different doctor there. Maybe they are there in Wisconsin. Hopefully she got to a doctor that knows what they are doing. It is not safe to have stones...

ARCHIVED Had Bloodwork, Now I Am Confused
gf4life replied to lemmy999's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IGG can be elevated for other reasons. Your results are conscidered inconclusive, since they don't tell you if you have celiac disease or not. I would request a referral to a GI if I were you. You should be tested further, either by endoscopy or gene tests. It is best to get the testing done before you start a gluten-free diet, since once you are on the... -
ARCHIVED 8th Continent Soy Milk
gf4life replied to KayJay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Kayla, I'm not sure about the 8th Continent Soymilk. I get the Silk brand, since it says right on it that it is free of gluten. I don't drink it anyhow, since I am allergic to soy, but my son who is just as sensitive to gluten as I am gets a stomachache from it. It may be that he is intolerant to soy as well, or it may be that there are traces of... -
ARCHIVED Food Labels
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Malt-O-Meal is a brand name. I don't know if it is the same on the East Coast, but I think it is. Most supermarkets carry them. They come in bags instead of boxes and usually have products identical to the other (more expensive) name brands. They currently only make 4 gluten free cereals and they DO NOT say gluten free on the bag. You can see their gluten... -
ARCHIVED Whole Family Gluten Free
gf4life replied to wildones's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Mom22, I wanted to say welcome to the message board. There is a wonderful group of supportive people here. I wouldn't know how I would have been able to make it without them! I hope your daughter's biopsy goes well. It is actually easier to have the whole family gluten-free. Trying to keep 1 or 2 members from getting contaminated by the non--gluten... -
ARCHIVED Food Labels
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
YES they are! The Post Cocoa Pebbles are also gluten-free. Malt-O-Meal Cocoa Dino-bites and Fruity Dino-bites are also both gluten-free. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Sitting On Pins And Needles
gf4life replied to the2ofus's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Robin, I am sorry that I made you question your results and diagnosis of no Celiac. I was told this statement by one of the few doctors I trust. What I think he meant about it is that those genes (DQ2 & DQ8) are the only ones they currently believe to cause celiac, but he also believes the lesser gluten intolerance genes are the same disease only not... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Tried Wateroz?
gf4life posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just wondering if they are worth the money. I need vitamins and minerals that are easy for my kids to take and will be absorbed easily. Liquid seems to be best and can be mixed with drinks to be taken easier. I am concerned since my kids are gluten-free, and dairy-free (and two of us are trying to be soy-free as well) so it is hard to get enough magnesium... -
ARCHIVED Not Absorbing After Year And A Half
gf4life replied to platinumpony49's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Tiffany is right. You need a balance of those supplements. Calcium alone is not enough to make strong bones, but for some reason that is the one that is pushed on the vitamin market. I would check into it. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Diet Recommendations
gf4life replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Paula, I can honestly tell you that I was down to just rice and chicken by the time I started on digestive enzymes to help me be able to include other foods. After a few weeks on those (at every meal!) I was able to use them less frequently and then after a month I was able to stop using them. I only use them now when I have a bit of trouble digesting... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Check For Gluten?
gf4life replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Gillian, What are the few pre-packaged items you buy? Sometimes the item is gluten-free by ingredients, but there is cross-contamination on the lines. You may be very sensitive to it. If you make a list of those products maybe we can all share our own personal experience with those products or companies. It couldn't hurt and we may just get to the... -
ARCHIVED Dr Said Its Not Coeliac...
gf4life replied to nickra's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is your doctor going to do the biopsy anyway? They should. They can't rule out Celiac on the appearance of good health. They cannot see the damage in your intestines by just looking at your outward health. Some people are completely symptom free, but their intestines are completely damaged. If your blood test was positive, then you either have Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Sitting On Pins And Needles
gf4life replied to the2ofus's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That is great news Lisa! I am so glad your doctor accepted the results. I have had mixed results with the Enterolab diagnosis. My family doctor accepted it for me and ordered the blood tests for my kids. My GI did NOT except it. My kids GI doctor did not discount it for me and is willing to conscider that they might be accurate for my kids... -
ARCHIVED Whole Family Gluten Free
gf4life replied to wildones's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have a similar situation as yours. Myself and my three children all have different levels of gluten intolerance. Two quite sensitive with bad reactions to gluten accidents and lots of symptoms and two with very few symptoms and very little reaction to a gluten accident. I believe my husband may also be gluten intolerant, but he won't get tested right... -
My daughter and I have the celiac disease gene (DQ2), and myself and all three of my kids are gluten intolerant. My sons have one gene in common with me and one other one that causes gluten intolerance. I think my husband should be tested, but he refuses. His reasoning is that he doesn't want to give up his favorite foods and he's not as sick as I was...

You mentioned you are not eating red meat or chicken, but what about fish? It is an excellent choice for protein and essential fats. God bless, Mariann

ARCHIVED New Here
gf4life replied to Akitt1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are not crazy. I tested negative on the blood tests, too. See the blood test measures the level of antibodies to gliadin (another word for gluten protein) in your blood. The antibodies are produced in your intestine, but only start to leak into your bloodstream when there is a lot of damage to your intestine. Since the damage in the intestines often... -
The fries and the hashbrowns in the US are gluten free. I don't know about Canada, but I can't see why they would be different. Only some restaurants use dedicated fryers though, so it is a good idea to ask. Especially if it is a McDonald's Express station like they have at malls and gas stations. They don't have the room for dedicated fryers, so those...

ARCHIVED Help! A Sick Celiac!
gf4life replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Guppymom, I found this interesting because the same thing happens to my son when he drinks rootbeer. His doctor thought it was the caffeine, but isn't rootbeer caffeine free (at least the name brands they serve in restaurants)? He can drink a Coke or a Pepsi occasionally without this happening, but give him rootbeer and he gets a horrible stomachache.... -
ARCHIVED Insurance
gf4life replied to tally's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Laura and Dessa are both right. I missed that fact when I was reading through the post yesterday. As long as you are not on the gluten-free diet, you are shortening your life expectancy. You are certainly increasing your risk for lymphoma, as well as an enormous array of other diseases. Please reconscider the diet. Even if you do not have symptoms you... -
ARCHIVED Medicine Nystatin?
gf4life replied to whitelacegal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
whitelacegal, I don't have it listed on either of my reference lists for meds. (from Celiac.com & Gluten Free Drugs.com). I would call the company if I were you. Good luck. If you don't have the number for the manufacturer Open Original Shared Link lists a lot of contacts for drug manufacturers at the end of their theraputic list. God bless,... -
ARCHIVED Do I Have To Buy New Pots?
gf4life replied to mrsfish-94's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ryebaby, That is a good alternative, especially if you cannot afford to replace bakeware. Another thing is to line your cake pans with foil. This should keep the gluten particles from getting to the gluten-free foods. God bless, Mariann
