ARCHIVED Would Testing Be Worthwhile?
Ollie's Mom replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The problem I'm having is that I know gluten does not agree with him, and I don't want to put him back on it. But I know that testing will almost definitely come back negative even if he has celiac because he is not consuming much gluten. We scared the ladies in the daycare (explained that he would not absorb nutrients, it would stunt his growth, lead... -
ARCHIVED Would Testing Be Worthwhile?
Ollie's Mom replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I also wanted to add that we suspect he's on a "gluten light" diet. The daycare's caterer has a gluten-free menu, but kids being kids, they grab food from each other and off the floor. Plus we've caught teachers who were just filling in in his class offering him crackers in the afternoon because they weren't aware of his dietary restrictions (yes, I was annoyed... -
ARCHIVED Would Testing Be Worthwhile?
Ollie's Mom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Although I suspect I already know the answer, I'm not really sure why I'm asking. But I was hoping someone might have some advice I hadn't thought of. My son is almost 2.5 yo. After the introduction of solids at 6 months, he started to slide down the weight percentilrs (90+ down to 50 over a 3 month period). His bm's were very loose, very frequent, and... -
ARCHIVED What Do You All Know About The Forks Over Knives Movie?
Ollie's Mom replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Trust me, I'm passionate about it too. A very dear friend of mine was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was telling me that the nutritionist at the diabetes clinic told him to load up on whole grain carbs. I flipped out! I couldn't believe it!! After much harping and prodding on my part, he agreed to go very carb light. He ended up not needed as much insulin... -

Not so sure I agree with the heart disease / high fat diet link. In fact, the data from the china study actually link heart disease to an increased level of consumption of grains (wheat and millet, not rice),and found no link to increases in fatty meat consumption and heart disease. Grain cconsumption was also linked with obesity. In fact, heart disease... -
ARCHIVED Confused.... A Little Frustrated
Ollie's Mom replied to nineof9's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not reliable in what way? I believe in the unreliable due to false negatives, not false positives (especially when celiac runs in the family and/or the positive result is on a celiac specific parameter) -
ARCHIVED My 16 Month Old Daughter Got A Borderline Positive
Ollie's Mom replied to ChristinaPro's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree with pp's. Positive after 2 months gluten-free plus resolution of symptoms on gluten-free diet would be enough for me. If you need a diagnosis, perhaps you could see about getting a referral to a celiac specialist, even if it is a few hour drive away, so that you get that official celiac diagnosis. Then you can march in toa doc office closer to... -
ARCHIVED Celiac? Help!
Ollie's Mom replied to Don't Blink's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A fellow aspie! The advice you received above is excellent (as always). And remember, keep eating gluten until all testing is done. Then regardless if the results, if I were you, I'd go gluten-free. I feel much less autistic when I am gluten-free (and dairy free helps even more). If I get glutened, I can feel myself withdrawing and my sensory issues... -
ARCHIVED Very Confused About 3 Yr Old
Ollie's Mom replied to Busybmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not as well versed on testing as others here (who I am sure will chime in), but the biopsy results came back positive for celiac didease, correct? You do not need a positive on both the blood workand biopsy for a ddiagnosis. And since doctors seem to still consider a positive biopsy to be the "gold standard" for a celiac diagnosis, I'm not sure what... -
ARCHIVED Help Interpreting Blood Work Please!
Ollie's Mom replied to 33Diane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And one last thing: Do NOT let anyone make you think these issues you are facing are "all in your head.". !!! I think many of us have heard that before, and IMHO it's what docs will say if they have run out of ideas of things to test for or reccomend. -
ARCHIVED Help Interpreting Blood Work Please!
Ollie's Mom replied to 33Diane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sadly, often there are no clear cut answers to any of your questions. I'll start with some advice and what I would do if I were you: I would stop eating gluten along with most other grains (especially corn). You know you feel better when you do not eat those things. I would give up trying to convince my doctor(s) of anything. I'd use the... -
ARCHIVED 21 Months Old And Confused About Next Steps
Ollie's Mom replied to Seton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi there, Unfortunately, I don't have much advice for you, but I did want to have some sort of reply for you. In my experience, the "mommy instinct" is usually on to something. Whether or not I think your LO has celiac, I can't answer, however. I do have a friend (now in her 30's) who has severe difficulty with dairy proteins (gets rashes, acne... -
ARCHIVED Hello--New & Scared
Ollie's Mom replied to Michlootz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For your hubby - tinkyada rice pasta is excellent. My non-gluten-free friends say it tastes like the real thing. The diet is doable. It just takes some getting used to. You have to get into a whole new mindset. And as for the cost, I actually find my grocery bill is smaller now because I buy mostly whole foods. The processed stuff (whether gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED 20 Month Old...starting Diagnostic Process
Ollie's Mom replied to wembles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with the pp's and your mommy instinct. I especially think the knocking your continued breastfeeding to be the ultimate in ignorance. Clearly, the nutritionist thinks that HUMAN milk is no good for your HUMAN child. As takala says, maybe she mistook your child for a cow. Ugh. You should definitely pursue full blood work, but because he is so young... -
ARCHIVED Anyone With An Unsupportive Spouse / Family Members / Friends?
Ollie's Mom replied to Menqet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Awwww he sounds just like my hubby. I don't know what I'd do if he wasn't supportive. -
ARCHIVED Mother Of Toddler Questioning Gluten-free Casein-free
Ollie's Mom replied to Mperkins1224's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 2 yo son has been gluten-free for over a year. We also just eliminated dairy a month ago and that seemed to help resolve his lingering loose stool issues. I give him a gluten-free / casein free multivitamin, and sneak as many veggies inti him as I can via soups for the most part (although he loooves broccoli, so we give him that fairly often). I... -
ARCHIVED Should I Get My Two Year Old Blood Tested?
Ollie's Mom replied to javic's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would definitely get the blood work done. The trauma of a blood draw on a toddler is over and forgotten very quickly. I would make sure the entire celiac panel is run (I'm sure someone will chime in with the full list of tests). I would also document all of those symptoms with the doc so it is in her file. That way, even if the blood tests come back... -
ARCHIVED Onset Of Celiac In Baby
Ollie's Mom replied to sunburst's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you get a positive blood test, and have a doctor willing to diagnose celiac on blood work and positive response to the diet alone, then I personally would forgo the biopsy for my child. Some docs require a positive biopsy for diagnosis, but this is an old, unnecessary approach. There can be value in having an endoscopy (to rule out other conditions... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet Or Gluten Free Lifestyle?
Ollie's Mom replied to captaincrab55's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease

ARCHIVED All The Wrong Tests First
Ollie's Mom replied to Keshavdas's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How is a colonoscopy supposed to show the condition of small intestine villi? Wow... If you don't need a diagnosis for any of the reasons shadow listed above, and you know you feel better gluten-free, just skip the diagnosis. If you feel you need a diagnosis, get a new doctor!! -
ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Before Test
Ollie's Mom replied to claireh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You felt better off gluten. You started a challenge and your symptoms are returning. This is confirmation that you are at least gluten intolerant. Personally, I'd skip the testing if I were you. In fact, that's what I did for myself. You know you have a problem with gluten. No doctor confirmation required and (the best part!) You don't need a doc's Rx... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Family Event. Beyond Frustrated
Ollie's Mom replied to Skysmom03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Also, I think I understand from your post that you want to keep this conversation you had with her a secret, essentially. Is that correct? Why?? You're not being unaccommodating, she is. Maybe I'm old school, but she isn't really part of the family. You are. Your DH and DS certainly are. Just let everyone know matter of factly what was said (preferably with... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Family Event. Beyond Frustrated
Ollie's Mom replied to Skysmom03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't even bother being passive... I'd just be aggressive. If it were my son and hubby being put at risk, I'd be a snarky b!tch and let everyone know how inconsiderate and rude her behaviour is. And how she clearly doesn't care about the health and well being of the family. I'd ask if she would insist on bringing peanut butter even if a child going... -
ARCHIVED 14 Month Old With Concerning Symptoms
Ollie's Mom replied to Eschul88's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Where do these doctors come from??? Stories like this make me so angry. I would take him off gluten if it were me. I did that with my oldest when he was about 9 months, and he had many of the same symptoms as your little guy. I am going to keep my yyoungest totally gluten-free until he is old enough to be able to tell me how he feels. Luckily you don...
