ARCHIVED Introduction... and a question
squirmingitch replied to TheBajan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Laughter is what will get you through this. That & an IRON resolve not to let ANYONE make you feel awkward about not eating something. I don't care if that is your own mother & she spent 14 hours preparing something especially for you. YOU are the ONLY gatekeeper to your good health. Stand your ground hon & stand tall & implacably. You are... -
ARCHIVED Doctor recommended not eating gluten before biopsy
squirmingitch replied to natalieccox's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry and I'm not being combative here but I really don't understand what the purpose of your post was. What exactly are you asking? Since you are so confident & defensive of your GI doc despite all the current recommendations in the UK, Oz, the US & so many other places then why are you freaking out? -
ARCHIVED Introduction... and a question
squirmingitch replied to TheBajan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You've been given some great advice! I will only add that you couldn't EVER pay me enough to eat ANYTHING at Cracker Barrel!!!!! That is a place rife with flying gluten. Seriously! I don't care that they have any "gluten-free" items on the menu. I've never been in a Cracker Barrel that wasn't clogged with diners. They have to work FAST & FURIOUS... -
Reason to go for an official diagnosis is your future & that of any kids you may have. Celiac is genetic. If you do have celiac then all first degree relatives should be tested every 2 years in the absence of symptoms & immediately if symptoms present. Celiac can present at any age. It will be MUCH easier for your kids & other relatives to get...

I am allergic to sulfa drugs & never tried Dapsone for that reason & a few other reasons. You say it is suspected you have dh. Have you had a dh biopsy? There are some other drugs that I have read can be used but are not as effective as Dapsone or sulfa drugs. They are in the tetracycline class. I don't know the dosing. Watch your...

ARCHIVED Food tolerance issues post-diagnosis
squirmingitch replied to Jammy27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You are so welcome Jammy! It's interesting how many of us find that after eating non processed foods for a while; when we do get around to eating them we are turned off to the max.! I find even the smell of them disgusting. I liken it to cleansing the palate. Once you do, you never go back. You might consider subscribing to The Gluten Free Watchdog... -
ARCHIVED Food tolerance issues post-diagnosis
squirmingitch replied to Jammy27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In light of the studies that found some probiotics that are labeled gluten-free yet tested over 20ppm I wouldn't touch them. Now those would be the powder or pill forms. Yogurt is not affected by that. Since you don't have a problem with dairy then I would say eat some yogurt every day. I like Chobani Greek because it has more kinds of cultures. Remember... -

You are most welcome Jammy! Glad to hear the fruit is working out for you. BTW, you can actually freeze omelets. I do it all the time. I make more than we will eat & then freeze what's left for a quick snack or meal in future. All you do is nuke it to heat. Also look up Frittata recipes. Make them up in muffin tins. Freeze & then nuke when you... -
ARCHIVED Milling vs buying gluten-free flour
squirmingitch replied to TheBajan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Okay then you have a clean grain mill & can go to town. I have only done rice in mine because I found that either my husband or myself don't really car for the consistency or flavors imparted by things like coconut flour, nut flours, pea or bean flours. Mostly the hubs is the big stick in the wheel. I like nut flours but he doesn't. For rice flours, I...- 4 replies

ARCHIVED Milling vs buying gluten-free flour
squirmingitch replied to TheBajan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The very first question is.... Was that Retsel grain mill used for gluten before your diagnosis? If the answer is yes then the 2nd question is can it be COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLED and cleaned in every single nook & cranny? If the answer to that is no, then you can't use that grain mill because you will be continually cross contaminating yourself. ...- 4 replies

ARCHIVED Food tolerance issues post-diagnosis
squirmingitch replied to Jammy27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Boy, you've sure had a rough time of it! My heart goes out to you! I love your positive attitude about coping until your villi heal more. THAT is your greatest ally in this journey. Okay, now to your problems...... Your gut is still damaged. You aren't healed yet - you know that as you've stated it. It can be really wonky for the first 6 months... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy confirmed?
squirmingitch replied to Goodlife79's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Okay, this makes more sense now. Was the celiac test in 2014 part of the checking to find out what was wrong with you which resulted in the Barrets dx? NO, a colonoscopy will not diagnose celiac disease at all. The biopsies for celiac disease are taken in the small intestine not the colon. You need to get your records, both past & present.... -
ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy, Negative Blood Tests
squirmingitch replied to echopants's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
BTW, all first degree relatives of celiacs are supposed to be tested for celiac every 2 years in the absence of symptoms -- immediately if symptoms present. Your kids, your parents & all siblings should be tested. And that goes for your brothers kids too. -
ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy, Negative Blood Tests
squirmingitch replied to echopants's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree completely with cyclinglady! Do you even know that there is such a thing called silent celiac? No symptoms at all but the villi are damaged. I see you joined in 2009. Why? Is that when your brother was diagnosed? IMHO you need to do a lot of research & find out just exactly what you're risking. -
ARCHIVED Biopsy confirmed?
squirmingitch replied to Goodlife79's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What were they looking for when they did the endoscopy? This is all backwards. You usually get a blood test first & then if that's positive they do an endoscopy. Did they tell you to make sure to continue eating gluten until the blood test is taken? -
ARCHIVED How effective is HD skin biopsy after being gluten free for a year
squirmingitch replied to Mo1966's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No one can say exactly how long you might be able to get a positive dh biopsy after having been gluten free as long as you have been. The Chicago Celiac Disease Center says this: Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link You said you had a flare of the plaque psoriasis -- that is NOT dh so why do you think the dh biopsy will show... -

ARCHIVED healthy bread recipe?
squirmingitch replied to Sign's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely!!!!!!! Your doctor seems to think all her villi have to be completely wiped out for her to be celiac. Like cyclinglady says.... get the records & get a second opinion. BTW, I happen to agree with all the rest she said too but I just wanted to emphasize the second opinion part. -
