  1. Are you taking probiotics? I mean a high dose probiotic with at least 10 different strains. It's hard to find them without corn/soy/etc but there are a few out there. They are expensive, but worth it if they help. I'm just wondering, if you're reacting to so many things, if it could be an imbalance of bacteria in the gut that is getting worse with the...
  2. I think I should do that. If anyone has any links to documents that might be good for educating family members, I would love to see them!
  3. Thanks you guys, I don't know what I would do without this forum. And don't worry, I will definitely call a hotline if I ever need to. It's good to hear that they are helpful. Wow. I didn't know that, but that does help explain why I went from being fine to debilitating depression yesterday. And the last time, before this, that I got glutened,...
  4. Thank you. I'm not feeling suicidal anymore and I don't have any plans. I haven't even been depressed lately. I did get glutened this morning and have been feeling rotten all day. I am definitely looking forward to seeing a doctor who hopefully will be able to help me. I just wish he had been able to see me sooner.
  5. Just as background, I have not been tested for celiac disease, went on an elimination diet on my own several months ago because of various GI and neurological and autoimmune problems, and since then things have been kind of crazy. I've found several food intolerances and it seems like I'm gluten intolerant, since every time I eat gluten, I have had sharp...
  6. I have been getting pains just below my ribs, too. I keep wondering, why there? Never had pain there before going gluten free. Patience is very difficult.

    ARCHIVED Hungry!

I've been going through the same thing. After being vegetarian for 10+ years for ethical reasons, I finally decided to start eating meat again. I have found that I feel much better when I eat meat; my body seems to need it. However, I do understand the moral qualms that make this decision difficult, and of course it's completely your choice. If you do...
  8. I hope you all just have normal boils and not hidradenitis suppurativa, because HS is a progressive disease that can become disabling if not treated properly. Anyone who thinks they might have HS REALLY needs to go to a good dermatologist (don't put it off and let it get worse like I did). And if you do go and are diagnosed with it, consider whether you...
  9. The thighs and butt cheeks are definitely places where HS tends to show up. I don't know if you can get HS lesions on your torso because there are no apocrine glands there, but I think I've read that sometimes people get them in odd places ... maybe if you have an advanced case and they are already forming tracts to different places. HS boils are deeper...
  10. Hidradenitis suppurativa affects the armpits and groin region (something to do with the glands there) so if it's on your side it would be something else, but it could very well be related to gluten.
  11. Well, I'm impressed that you didn't cry. I probably would have. Certainly, the hardest part of being unable to eat gluten is not giving up foods - it's trying to navigate a social world full of gluten and well-meaning people who don't get it. I hope you feel better soon and that your next birthday party is full of delicious things you can eat.
  12. Thank you - this is really helpful. In fairness to the Church, I read a statement, either from the Vatican or US bishops, outlining different options for Communion, which gave the options you mentioned and did not treat low gluten hosts as a solution for everyone. However, not all Catholics in charge of arrangements for communion read those documents ...
  13. I'm trying ... have met with resistance to the idea. I think they think I'm being needlessly difficult. As in, these hosts are supposed to be OK, they are OK for our other parishioner who is gluten intolerant, so why are they not OK for you? I don't understand why scientists would say they are safe and below reactive levels if that is not true. Am I just...
  14. I am Catholic and have been receiving the approved low-gluten hosts and I'm pretty sure that I'm reacting to them. I'm pretty sure that it's not just CC, because I tried an unconsecrated one that had not been handled by anyone and I was in pain for hours after that. It could have been something else, I guess, although it was the same pains that I get when...
  15. Thank you for commenting - I was hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself about these things would share their wisdom. I don't want to be responsible for anyone setting their house on fire!
  16. LOL.
  17. I see this is an old thread but a new poster, so, hi! I have HS as well, but have not been gluten-free long enough to see if it will help. However, I did gluten myself a couple days ago as a test and found that the next day all my cysts started hurting - they didn't actually flare up, but I was worried that they might. My HS has been in remission for...
  18. I just wanted to point out that gluten-free breads are probably not a good idea since he is having problems with grains. I cannot eat those breads; all the flours and potato starch wreak havoc on my damaged digestive system. The microwave in the room is a good idea though. I was wondering too about whether the OP might be able to use camping equipment...
  19. An elimination diet and a gluten challenge is a test. Just because you don't get a piece of paper from your doctor does not mean it is not a test. Trust your body.
  20. Exactly. They are really good with toasted cashews and pecans.
  21. Your dad gets upset if you just boil things in a pot? I'm really sorry that you have to deal with that. I don't know if it's possible to cook meat in a microwave and it sounds like you need meat to get your nutrients. If your dad leaves the house sometimes, maybe you could wait till he's gone and then cook a bunch of food and refrigerate it for the next...
  22. That sounds similar to what happens to me. I get the nausea in waves and sometimes it feels more like cramping, sometimes it's more vague and dispersed. The pain in my left side can also be either so vague that I'm not sure if it's actually there, or really concentrated like being stabbed.
  23. You have to cook. I'm sorry, but there's no way around it. I am in the same boat as you as far as all the sensitivities. I am not exactly the world's greatest cook either, but I'm getting better - and faster - at it. The good news is that meals do not have to be complicated. For instance, you can steam or boil fresh veggies like zucchini, carrots,...
  24. I don't know, but those are all symptoms that I get when I eat gluten. Let us know how the panel goes.
  25. Go with your own body. That's what I have decided, or at least keep trying to decide (because I, too, will have these periods where I think "What if this is all some big mistake I'm making?" - Then I eat gluten again and get to enjoy the consequences). I honestly don't know why our society is so fixated on medical tests as the gold standard of everything...
