ARCHIVED Prednisone
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I didn't even think about the prednisone impacting my celiac tests! But the doctor was a complete jerk, and told me that "celiac doesn't pop up overnight" so obviously I couldn't have DH/celiac, but completely tuned me out when I tried to explain that my antibodies were high, I'd been battling gluten issues for two years, etc. SO frustrated. -
ARCHIVED Prednisone
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you so much! I'm planning to call my general practitioner in the morning, and to avoid the medication until after Tuesday. -
I posted about the specifics in the DH forum, but I wanted to know if anyone could help me. I got prescribed prednisone today for a full-body rash, and I'm reading that prednisone is used to reduce inflammation in celiac patients, especially those with refractory sprue. I'm supposed to be biopsied on Tuesday for celiac disease, and I don't want ANYTHING...

So yesterday, I broke out in hundreds of tiny little red bumps that itched on my chest. There were a few on my arms as well. Throughout the rest of yesterday and today, the rash expanded to cover my arms, hands, shoulders, face, feet, and legs. They are little tiny welts, with no head, and Benadryl provided no relief. I saw the doctor this morning, and...

ARCHIVED Annoyed With Dermatologist
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Well, I'm definitely gonna mention it to my gastro doctor, because he's probably seen a few cases of DH in his day. It seems to respond to the meds, so who knows. It just takes for-bloody-ever for me to heal from stuff--I usually need more than one course of antibiotics to do the trick. I'm hoping I won't have to go back to her though. -
ARCHIVED Seriously?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to celiacgirl1982's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've definitely taken advantage of it though...I ate stuff I haven't eaten in 18 months. The symptoms are a royal pain, but I have appreciated the convenience while I still can! I'm trying to stay positive with the whole thing. Ohhhh...there was a homeschooling woman a few years ago who was "gluten intolerant." Her main symptom was fatigue, which I... -
ARCHIVED Maybe This Gluten Challenge Is Too Challenging For Me...
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to heathenly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi! I'm sorry you're in pain and suffering. I've been on a gluten challenge for two and a half months, and I completely understand. I am absolutely miserable, and if you truly are celiac/gluten intolerant, it will be miserable (unless you're asymptomatic). But you don't have to eat gluten at every meal, and you don't have to gorge on it either. If it gets... -
ARCHIVED Annoyed With Dermatologist
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Well, the derm thinks it's folliculitis, and is giving me topical clindamycin, which will hopefully stop the horrible D that's resulted from the oral stuff. If that doesn't clear it up, she's going to culture it. She still doesn't think it's anything gluten-related, or that my immune system is a problem, despite my 18 years of chronic ear infections, eye... -
ARCHIVED Annoyed With Dermatologist
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Oh, no worries...I can't even remember if I mentioned my biopsy date, and if I did, I don't expect you to remember! If it's not cleared up, I'm definitely trying low iodine once gluten-free again. I'm also going off sugar because I have a horrible problem with yeast....yay for Diflucan! That's a good point about the tetracyclines...doxycycline is... -

Xanthan gum works for sure. Especially if you use almond flour, add a little bit of almond butter. I've used that to thicken before. -
ARCHIVED Annoyed With Dermatologist
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
thanks, squirmingitch, it really helps. And yes, I've had a TON of doxycycline, and clindamycin is a lovely pill that can cause all of the good bacteria in the gut to die, which brings on a strain of nasty bacteria, that could give me an intestinal infection/colitis. I can't wait to be done with that. My derm doesn't think it's DH, and I can't be positive... -
So long story short, I've been on doxycycline for four months roughly, due to what the dermatologist thought was an "atypical mycobacterial infection" on my lower leg. It still has not cleared up, and while it's looking better, it's definitely not fully healed. She cultured it two months ago for staph/other fast growing bacteria, and it was negative, but...

ARCHIVED I've Made A Huge Mistake
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, that's what I've been doing....we're out of yogurt anyway. I'm terrified the clindamycin is going to kill me...luckily, I see my dermatologist in a few days and I can hopefully get answers. -
ARCHIVED I've Made A Huge Mistake
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh yeah, of course. And I read the inserts on both, and there's NOTHING about probiotics. Funnily enough, when my mom went to get the clindamycin, the pharmacist gave her a funny look and asked if all my doctors knew all of the meds I was on, as I'm on diflucan as well. I also was told to eat yogurt, as that's full of probiotics, but I'm not sure... -
So I'm on clindamycin and doxycycline. Yay for stubborn skin infections. I'm also taking a probiotic as I have problems with yeast and such, not to mention taking clindamycin puts you at an increased risk for developing nasty intestinal bacterial infections. I don't always, but I have sometimes, taken my probiotic at the same time as my antibiotics, and...

ARCHIVED What Am I Supposed To Eat?
GlutenFreeAustinite replied to Sage122's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My best friend was gluten free/vegetarian for a while. There's a great cookbook out called The Gluten Free Vegan, by Susan O'Brien, which, while you may not be vegan, has great recipes than can easily be modified to simply vegetarian. But the others are right....you'll definitely have to cook. I know Amy's has some frozen vegetarian/gluten free burritos... -

I'm almost finished with the third day of 1200 milligrams of clindamycin, and absolutely no change. I know it could turn at any point, but I feel like I should be having some sort of relief. The burning is just as bad, and the bumps are still there. -

Not every meal, but I'd say probably at at least 2 meals. And maybe a few snacks. -

@rosetapper: I know, and I'm sorry. I didn't have a ton of time, and I was challenged to get them to show up as, you're right, they aren't very red. His thought process was that they were so recently developed, they hadn't had a chance to really swell up and turn red. I was prescribed clindamyacin, but I'm also on doxycycline. Not sure on the first one... -

ARCHIVED Weirdest Skin Thing Happened Today

@EatMeat4Good...thanks, I'll try the iodized salt/bread thing. I'd actually rather it be DH than what I've been diagnosed with, as it would mean I already know the cure...gluten-free life. But still, not pleasant. The impetigo actually cleared up but now I have what's tentatively being called folliculitis in my armpit. @squirming itch: Open Original... -

GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Ugh, the neverending battles. I'm starting to think it is DH, though of course I'm not sure. The doctor said at first one month, but I stayed on it two, and he agreed it was ultimately best. I think he said 1-2 slices of bread a day, but I've probably eaten more than that per day. -

I don't know what they are. I'm hoping my dermatologist has more answers. They do feel itchy, and are sort of looking more like tiny ant bites (red tip). -

GlutenFreeAustinite replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hmm, interesting. Is DH usually symmetrical in nature or can it be just in one place on one side? And the antibiotic didn't prevent me from getting impetigo last week, so I'm not really sure. They still hurt, though the skin around them itches. Still wicked painful to touch.
