  1. I got diagnosed with gastritis at 13. I haven't had any problems with it since gluten-free, unless I eat late at night or a ton of acidic foods.
  2. Yeah, I've had that experience. The first guy I dated understood what gluten-free was (some relative had celiac) but he didn't seem to care all that much about how I was feeling. We barely lasted a month, though not for gluten free reasons. My current boyfriend is amazing. He's always checking if places have gluten-free menus, if foods have gluten, etc...
  3. Yeah, I'm definitely thinking I need to examine other factors. I'm not eating anything different. My doctor is willing to explore autoimmune conditions, though I doubt she had the tests run without me doing anything. Should I see a rheumatologist? I'd really like to figure this all out. I also seem to have a really hard time shaking infections. I'm...
  4. I'm not officially diagnosed with celiac (yet--that saga continues haha) but I went gluten free at 16 to combat headaches and "gastritis." I was always a big kid (high end of both height and weight), and was overweight in my early teen years. Even today, almost two years gluten-free, I'm not especially skinny. Don't know if that helps, but there you go...
  5. Hey y'all, thanks for the information and encouragement. I really appreciate it...the pain is frustrating because I can't figure out its origins or its pattern, and my fatigue is just crushing. Granted, I recently had a close family member pass away and another one is in the hospital, so everything is very stressful right now, so I'm sure stress is part...
  6. So I've been gluten-free for almost two years, and in the last six months, I've been experiencing very odd symptoms. I've been off of gluten (with the exception of small accidents) but now, I feel like I could sleep all the time. I've been under a lot of stress, and I've always tended to sleep less, but now I practically feel like a zombie in my everyday...
  7. I have had Starbucks caramel frappes without any major issue...I did notice slight stomachache but that was also when I was lactose intolerant. No troubles since. I also drink their Caffe Mochas, which have never given me problems.
  8. As a kid, I pretty much had chronic swimmers' ear. I also have what's called a dysfunctional eustachian tube, which contributes to that somewhat. I also get sick really easily. I don't know if it's gluten-related, but I've definitely gotten ear infections less than I used to.
  9. I know! I know a girl who got chased by one. And one summer, I was out on a ski ramp (don't ask me why we were hanging out on a water ski ramp in the middle of a lake!) and my friend's brother looked down and there were like five moccasins hanging around the base of the dock. And we had to swim all the way back to shore. UGH. I've lived in Wisconsin and...
  10. I definitely have had a reaction to Play Doh! It "burns" my hands...they turn bright red and swell.
  11. And coral snakes. Ugh. Not a fan. Water moccasins scare me because they like to hide. At least rattlers have the decency to let you know they're around. And...ooh! I hope we don't have it. I haven't done extensive research into it. I tend to creep myself out..
  12. I had shoulder surgery this past September, and at my follow-up appointment 1 week after surgery, I asked the doctor what exactly a "subacromial decompression with a capsular shift" meant. Now, my orthopedic surgeon, who has the bedside manner of a corpse, looks at me and says," Well, I put a rubber band in it. Tightened it up." Obviously meant as a joke...
  13. I detest scorpions. And snakes. And Florida is probably just as bad, if not worse!
  14. I lost all of my weight before going gluten-free. I did the South Beach diet (which is essentially gluten free, but we weren't calling it that). Lost about 20 pounds. I started competitive swimming, and continued to lose weight (put me at about a size 10). But I had horrible migraines. I was eating bread and veggie meats (brief stint as a vegetarian,...
  15. That's entirely possible.....I haven't worn shorts all that often this winter, so it would have been harder for me to do that, but if it were an allergic reaction, I think it would have gone away by now. So it could have been a burn, or a nasty bite of some kind. We have rather nasty bugs around here.
  16. That's what I was thinking. DH doesn't make any sense. I've always had crazy sensitive skin though....I'm the type that steps outside and breaks out in a rash.
  17. About eight weeks ago, I noticed a purplish lesion on my leg (about the size of a quarter). I think it existed before that, but that was when I really took notice of it. The skin surrounding it was raised. It didn't itch too badly, but it hurt if I accidentally bumped it. It just would NOT go away. The thing got bigger and now it's finally shrinking...
  18. I miss convenience--just being able to walk in some place and order whatever I want. -Red velvet cake -Cinnamon chip bread (Great Harvest Bakery was SO yummy) -Random flavored pancakes from IHOP -Fresh, warm, bread. -Croissants -Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. I was actually never a huge fan of pasta as a kid. I ate pasta because I really...
  19. That makes more sense than "safe" lower-gluten wheat. I don't know exactly what he read, but I think I may have misunderstood. But he did mention that there was something with a lower gluten content that was still wheat flour, so that Gluten Free Wheat Flour makes perfect sense. I was curious because I wonder if I'd react to it. I don't think we have...
  20. My grandmother was dx'ed with Crohn's when she was much, much older...when she was in her 70s. She was tested for celiac in the 1990s, but it came back negative. My family is convinced she had gluten-intolerance, and most likely celiac, even though she did have a negative test. The Crohn's was absolutely nasty--she eventually had to have a colostomy bag...
  21. So, my boyfriend, who is not a celiac but has been extremely supportive of my diet, was telling me that wheat produced in Europe contains lower gluten levels than American wheat, and that those with Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance can eat it just fine, but those who have true celiac disease can't. I'm curious if that's valid, or if those with gluten problems...
  22. I used to get canker sores quite frequently. They were usually stress-related for me, but I also was eating gluten at the time. Now that I'm gluten-free, I notice them arising a lot less. As in, I think I've only had one in the past year and a half of gluten-freeness. I'm actually getting one now, because my stress level is through the roof.
  23. I am definitely keeping active...the surgery kind of laid me low for a couple of months (especially during the weeks I had to wear a gigantic brace), and I still haven't been given the okay for over-the-head movements, and I'm not strong enough to do much else with it. But my mom brought me to her water aerobics class for people with arthritis, and that...
  24. Hi Rosetapper...I've been off the forum for a couple of weeks, so I apologize for the extended delay. I appreciate your detailed response. I definitely believe gluten can affect joints (I'm currently in therapy for both of my shoulders, one as a preventative measure and one as rehab from surgery in September) and I appreciate all your information. ...
  25. I was under the impression (having read McDonald's nutrition/ingredients information online) that the fries were not gluten free due to some beef flavoring they put on the fries that has wheat in it. Can anyone else verify?
