  1. Sorry, I just re-read you question and missed the larabar part. From my experience, Larabars are good, but not particularly while running. The nuts are high in fat (fat is slow to digest), which makes it hard on the digestive system....and I'm pretty sure you don't want to be in the line-up a the port-a-potty. When I do half marathons, I stick to water and...
  2. Hey Mike, Check out Hammer Nutrition products: Open Original Shared Link I use their gels for long distance running and triathlons (6-7 hr events) in combination with other food and supplements. I have to admit that they don't taste the greatest, but it depends how desparate you are to find a product that gives you the boost you need (and feel confident...
  3. For all those who live in Canada, there is a new regulation for food labelling. At the end of this year, it will be mandatory for all Canadian products to indicate potential allergens on the labels. This is definitely a step in the right direction (and it will make our lives a lot easier). Check it out at: Open Original Shared Link
  4. L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid. It is not derived from any gluten containing food. Therefore, it is ok for Celiacs to use glutamine supplementation - it is particularily good as a fuel for the cells of the intestinal lining (good for Celiac recovery) and also good for muscle repair (from weight lifting/working out). However, it is important to ensure...

    ARCHIVED Celiac Fitness

Hi Michelle, I don't know if I can answer all your questions, but I can give you my thoughts, and how I pulled through the worst times. I was diagnosed when I was ~20 years old, and was an avid runner at the time. It took me a good few years to feel "normal" again. Some days I was too bloated, in pain, or too weak to think about running, so those days...
  6. My guess is that at least 80% of Celiacs know exactly the "The Celiac Belly" is. As I read through this thread, I could relate to at least one thing in each of them! If you have only been gluten-free for a few months, or for years and years, I would recommend looking into Digestive Enzymes and a Probiotic. I consider myself "healed", but I started to take...
  7. Hi Kristalee Jane, Here is a great website on Gluten Free Travelling in Canada that has been very helpful for me in the past. I don't know if you have ever been to BC, but it is gluten free heaven....probably the more gluten-free options (eating and shopping) than anywhere else in Canada. A few summers ago I travelled from Edmonton to Victoria and there...
  8. Thanks for the Lara bar tip. I tried them a while back, but found the nuts were a bit much for my digestive system. I might have to slowly introduce them again and see what happens... That time improvement is fantastic! I know when I have a good run, I am so proud of myself and feel like telling everyone....must be the runner's high. That feeling is something...
  9. The last theory of your post is likely right. It's all about the neural adaptation and becoming energy efficient. Adaptabililty is an amazing thing about the human body and it's what makes training fun....depending on your situation. ; ) In response to your question of what do I eat....I'm not sure yet. To be honest, I haven't found any solid food that...
  10. Hi hightop girl, I am also doing 1/2 Iron training, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I would strongly recommend looking more into your diet. I don't know what you training background is, but your program must ramp up pretty quick if you are doing that much training in the first 3 months. Because of the energy systems used in very-long endurance...
  11. Hi Suzimarie, I agree with the above recommendations. Unfortunately your feelings, physically and emotionally, are quite common. I am sure I'm not the only one who can relate to your problems right now. I was also in universoty when I was diagnosed and dealing with all the "other issues" that come along with Celiac. It was hard to concentrate and focus...

    ARCHIVED Protien Bars

The website for Simply Bars is the following: Open Original Shared Link
  13. Lara bars have always been ok with me too. However, at one point of my intestinal healing I became sensitive to both nuts and dried fruit. Have you ever been sensitive to these before?

    ARCHIVED Any Celiac Athletes?

Your story is all too familiar. Unfortunately there is no quick fix; however, I found that going on a liquid diet somewhat helps the symptoms. I found a meal replacement shake that works well. I once met a guy who just went on lemon juice tea/broth for 2-3 days - I didn't try that, but you might want to consider it. It doesn't supply very much energy, but...
  15. I lived in Edmonton for the past 5 years and I have to say that Normand's is one of the best restuarants. It's on Jasper Ave. A bit pricy, but definitely Celiac-safe. They even serve you your own toasted bread before the meal....and they have gluten-free cake. Another good choice is Organic Roots (by the University). It's a market and restuarant all in...
  16. Thanks Carla. : ) To correct, I use Nature's Path Organic Crispy Rice cereal, which is gluten free (as opposed to Kelloggs). : )
  17. Hi Mia, I don't know if I can help you much, as I don't eat solids when exercising. But, I do make protein bars from time to time. I never really measure, but found the combination of the following tastes the best: - peanut butter - honey - whey protein powder (chocolate) - rice crisp cereal/quinoa flakes -ground flaxseed - raisins/dried cranberries...
  18. Great debate. The time and thought put into your posts' have not gone un-noticed. Thanks!
  19. I am in the same boat. I don't get radical symptoms, but I always feel better when I avoid all gluten-free grains. However, I can also tolerate ~2 rice cakes a day or a handful or two of gluten-free rice krispies. If interested, do some reading on the Paleo diet (no grains, no dairy, no soy). PS. Ursa Major, your granddaughter is beautiful!
  20. Hi Peacenlove_girl17 It really depends what you are sensitive to. The most common type of protein is whey, which is not tolerated by some. One brand that might be worth looking at is Vega (www.myvega.com). Doesn't taste that great alone, but good in a fruit smoothie. For a long time, I had trouble with typical whey powder (chocolate, vanilla, etc...
  21. Hi KrisT From a girl with no gyn. problems, I have experienced pain from sex in the past. For a good year after I was diagnosed, I felt pain and discomfort. I had always related it to my intestine and bowels. I figured that having an inflammed small intestine and having D all the time, my lower abdomen must be very sensitive. After being gluten-free...
  22. Here is my 2 cents: I agree that you really have to listen to your body. I have done a considerable amount of research into the vegan lifestyle (for ethical/health reasons), but have given that up since my body was rejecting it. Many of the veg foods have gluten as a base, so that eliminates a lot. Plus, I don't do very well on beans, seeds or nuts, so...
  23. As you can see, almost everyone's experience is different. Personally, I have good days and bad. Some days I look normal, and others I look 6 months pregnant. For me, I'd say the two main factors are my starch intake (thus, water retention) and my regularity (cycles of D and Constip.) However, now I have very good control of both of these....after a lot of...
  24. As a side note, I recently tried Amy's Pizza and I really liked it (mind you I haven't had pizza in years). My husband added some vegetables and tuna and it was a really nice treat. I didn't even feel the starch-bloat afterwards! Perhaps if I had eaten more, I would have..... I kept thinking how good it even 2 days later. : ) Maybe a better choice than...
  25. I agree with the above. When buying gluten free, I pretty much stick with the more popular companies, who only make gluten-free food. That way, you can ensure there is no cross contamination. Also, be aware of those foods that should be naturally gluten free (ie. rice cakes), but aren't necessarily free of gluten. Opt for the often more expensive "Gluten...
