  1. My little guy was normal weight until rapid onset celiac caused him to drop 1/3 of his body weight in 2months (he was 20months at diagnosis). Celiac damages the intestines which makes it difficult to absorb the nutrients the body needs. The intestines will heal & normalize in a few months to a year - but in that time, she might need to eat A LOT, way...
  2. Sure sounds like you are on to your answer. I'd seek a second opinion with a pediatric gastroenterologist. Like many others, my family's experience with diagnosis was not an easy one. Once you've exhausted the medical route, you may want to try an elimination diet and see if it makes a difference...Keep in mind, even if celiac is negative, gluten-intolerance...
  3. Hey, sounds like a rough time, but atleast you've seen some improvement. It can take some time. For my 6yr old, eliminating dairy was the key to success. He felt a million times better when he went gluten-free (and it was his little brother who was diagnosed first after a terrible bout of vomiting, diarrhea & weightloss). Anyway, my son was hospitalized...
  4. Consider vitamins, and if already taking, adjust/increase. The body struggles w/ vitamin-nutrient absorption as you heal. B12 is a wonder drug for me (try to ones tgat melt under your tongue for best absorption) - you may find you have a deficiency in some things. Also, be sure any supplements you take a gluten-free, often a hidden source of gluten
  5. Navigating the whole gluten-free/food intolerance world is hard, getting others to understand it is torture. My suggestion, accept that to him - this whole food thing seemss ridiculous & try not talk about it for a few Weeks. During this time stick to a very simple diet - fresh fruit, vegis, chicken, rice (no corn or dairy)... eat very plain foods but...
  6. It's so frustrating looking for answers. It cant hurt to try going dairy free for a few days & see if there are any changes.
  7. Given the family connection, I'd try diet options before medication. My 7yr old improved gluten-free but stomach/bathroom issues didn't completely resolve until we went mostly dairy free. Probotics help too!
  8. Another thought for you to consider... many with celiac/gluten intolerance have an issue digesting dairy - likely a staple in your little man's diet. My Tommy was a huge milk drinker but celiac damaged the villi in the intestine making him intolerant to dairy. I've been told that he may outgrow this (with healing), he's able to digest a little dairy without...
  9. So think of it this way...when your little one was eating gluten - her body was creating powerful antibodies to fight the gluten (something her body saw as a foreign invader), the gluten was causing damage but the gluten was held somewhat in check by the antibodies. Eliminate gluten and her body quickly starts to reverse damage & stops building antibodies...
  10. Follow your gut momma. Important question is...if blood test is positive, did you "catch it" before villi damage took place. I so wish I could have faith in doctors but my child's missed celiac diagnosis left me with little hope. You have positive blood work, try the gluten-free diet & document the changes/Improvements and bring that to your next appointment...
  11. One smart momma...i sent you a private message , pls try to get docs to do a celiac panel with todays blood work. It's really important. Celiac is tricky but thankfully its the only disease that you have complete control of, no meds, just food! Would be happy to help you...been there! I also asked friends in the Awesome celiac community to give you advice...
  12. Hi, follow your instincts and push your doctors! This time last year my 1 1/2yr old developed ongoing diarrhea and vomiting. Everything he ate wemt right through him. Doctors insisted it was a virus. This went on for almost 2 montbs.. He went from a healthy 30lb baby to a sickly 20lb baby, failing to thrive. We were made regular ER visits, spent 3days in...
  13. My 7yr old has struggled with this as well. Gluten free improved his toilet issues but it wasn't until we went tried dairy free that his problems resolved. If he gets glutened or has more than a little dairy, he's back to a few days of problems. It's worth trying, Almond Milk is a easy substitute and he noticed an great improvement within a few days!
  14. My 1 1/2 yr old was diagnosed last year. Trust me, its not all that unusual.. but it is unusal that your doctor did the test and figured it out! Count your blessings...celiac dx is live-saving at a young age & she wont suffer the way countless others who go undx do! It is essential to get her body off of gluten immediately...she is not absorbing the nutrients...
  15. Hey, mashed potatoes are gluten free, so its not so bad already. Just use real potatoes (the boxed mashed potatoes are probably not). You know, a lot of people with gluten-problems crave wheat products, especially the unhealthy ones like white bread...its kinda like an addiction to wheat. Eventually that does go away. There are tons of gluten-free products...
  16. wow, yes...u have every reason to suspect celiac. Don't get overwhelmed by the blood test details just ask your doctor for a celiac blood panel. 90% of people who have it dont know it & doctors rarely test for it - you might have to really push for it (its so ridiculous, doctors had no problem ordering catscans & ultrasounds for my son but a $400...
  17. An official diagnosis is important... but not nearly as important as keeping your little one well. At this point, you've got it covered...if one grain of wheat makes him sick for days, sure sounds like celiac - treat it like celiac until you find a doctor that you trust to advise you well. My son was diagnosed at almost 2... the entire family went gluten...
  18. Our stories r do similar, my 21 month old just went through 2 months of hell! Docs kept saying it was a virus...I didn't believe him as I watched him getting sicker and sicker. A week before getting results I took him of gluten and he improved overnight, literally- his constant diarrhea stopped! He got a postive diagnosis from blood work and has been gluten...
  19. My son is 21 months old. In June he was the picture of a happy, healthy, chubby baby! Then he began vomitting regularly which turned into ongoing diarrhea. In less than two months, he lost 1/3 of his body weight, totally weak and was deteriorating fast. Many doc visits, 3 visits to a "good" peds er, admitted for 3 days....and after endless blood work, necessary...
  20. My 21 month old son was just diagnosed with celiac after a terrible 2 month long illness. Our family of 5 has quickly gone gluten-free at home, and I'm obsessed with reading and learning more. My husband has had stomache issues for 20 yrs, always baffled doctors, has rectal prolapse and likely bi-polar disorder (also sought help hot bit never diagnosed...
