ARCHIVED Worse Attack After Starting Diet And Being Exposed?
SMDBill replied to amiglute's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had 4 days of pretty rough intestinal pain and cramping after 5 weeks gluten-free and then getting glutened. The following 4-7 days were lighter symptoms followed by the last day of a 2 week recovery where I actually felt good again, as if it hadn't happened. And I didn't have a cheeseburger or anything. Mine was just cross contamination. -
ARCHIVED Tested Today!
SMDBill replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you both! I'm very pleased that they had not only suspicions of celiac, just like I had, but also were able to even have visual evidence of more than just celiac. The ibuprofen damage is worrying, but now that the headaches are gone I don't take it any longer. Most worrisome for me are my 4 children needing to be tested and the ramifications if any... -
ARCHIVED Newly Self-Diagnosed - Get Tested! My Story...
SMDBill replied to SMDBill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You're right and I guess I'm fortunate that I have an HMO with open access so I didn't even bother with my GP and went straight to the gastro. I was armed with many pages of notes of my symptoms, changes after gluten-free, list of all symptoms with mine highlighted, etc. I know everyone can't go straight to the gastro, but worth avoiding the GP if the first... -
ARCHIVED Newly Self-Diagnosed - Get Tested! My Story...
SMDBill posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I posted some of this elsewhere, but this is for those newly self-diagnosed or suspecting they have celiac due to improper or incomplete testing by their doctor. I self diagnosed 2 months ago and have been gluten-free ever since. One glutening a couple weeks ago...brutal. I decided to setup an appointment with a gastro and find out just what my situation... -
ARCHIVED Will An Endoscopy Show Physical Evidence Of Celiac?
SMDBill replied to jwblue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just had my endoscopy yesterday and one of the questions I asked in advance was whether damage would be visible or not. He said most times the damage is only microscopic so they do their best to determine where to sample/biopsy and they use multiple locations just for that reason. Mine was ugly. I had many visible spots on the printout of some photos he... -
I have self diagnosed myself as celiac, but I wanted an accurate diagnosis and follow-on plan to know if I have bone, vitamin and other issues that need attention. Yesterday was my first appointment with my gastro and he was wonderful! We went over all my symptoms, including skin condition that I think used to be DH. Since I am now gluten-free he was unable...

ARCHIVED When Does Bloating Go Away?
SMDBill replied to TGK112's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Mine seems to come and go and I haven't pegged it to any particular food yet. However, the bloat from my gluten-free diet is much different from what I felt while still eating gluten-rich foods. When i got glutened recently I felt like someone was pumping air into my insides and it was a sense of feeling like I had a basketball hiding under my shirt. But... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Know If I'm Healing Or Ingesting Gluten?
SMDBill replied to megsybeth's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Megsybeth, I've been lactose intolerant my whole life. I avoided milk and suffered the consequences when I had cheese (plain, processed, block, pizza, tacos, etc.). When I went gluten-free I hoped that the probiotic and changes in my diet would lessen the lactose intolerance, but it seems to have actually enhanced it, unfortunately. I drink Lactaid instead... -
ARCHIVED Cheating When On A Gluten Free Diet
SMDBill replied to jwblue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That sentence about not imagining a little bit once a month would harm someone with celiac is a common misconception, particularly by those who do not have it or do not have someone close in their lives with it. If you have celiac, even if you suffer no physical pain from ingestion of gluten your body goes through a lot of damage to your intestinal villi... -
ARCHIVED What Abdomen Related Symptoms Did You Have?
SMDBill replied to guest134's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Mine were from right of center of my upper abdomen, somewhere slightly below my ribcage and they extended all the way down to my waist. When I was eating gluten the pain didn't seem to come and go. It was just constant. The pain was an ache, almost flu-like but not quite that strong. The pains weren't sharp at all, but sometimes they were "crampy" and would... -
ARCHIVED Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
SMDBill replied to deb445's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would give a big +1 to keeping him at home that day. It's a bit unbelievable that a teacher would know of his health issues, yet still introduce such a poison to his system all around where he's breathing it and in direct or indirect contact (intentionally). Even my wife is so sensitive that she reminds me when to wash my hands if she sees me touch a countertop... -
ARCHIVED Skin Rash And Gluten?
SMDBill replied to Sohnovics's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Without knowing what you were tested for exactly and how you were tested, a negative isn't necessarily a negative. I'd think if you began to notice even slight changes after being gluten-free, re-introducing it could certainly cause reactions. I had nearly all my symptoms disappear within the first week so there's no reason to think you couldn't feel those... -
I would also recommend a digestive enzyme, particularly ones focused on the problems you have digesting, such as lactose. I am highly lactose intolerant and have been my entire life. I just lived with the D that it caused, but that was miserable, and even worse with the celiac. But what I found was a high level lactase enzyme and just tonight I was able to...

ARCHIVED Possibly Glutened - How Long Till You See A Reaction?
SMDBill replied to SMDBill's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you!!! I was so confident before I got glutened and thought I had a handle on it afterward. Then I got a little freaked thinking it happened again so soon after starting to recover from the last one. I can't really describe the feelings to family because they don't understand what I feel and how it effects me. It's great to have a wonderful forum of... -
ARCHIVED Possibly Glutened - How Long Till You See A Reaction?
SMDBill replied to SMDBill's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, it was from Ledo's pizza, which is also not prepared in a gluten-free kitchen. It was a risk, one I probably won't take again. However, I apparently was not glutened. I'm lactose intolerant but can handle some lactose. However, the pizza cheese exceeded that level and I think my fear was my body reacting to the cheese. Today I'm still fine other than... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge And Awful Symptoms
SMDBill replied to Megan1980's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I haven't taken a gluten challenge. One time I was glutened and it was horribly painful. I refuse to do it intentionally. I am self diagnosed and have my GI appt Monday for official testing. From what I"ve found, the antibodies stay in the body at high levels up to 6-12 months. Earlier detection is always best, but if they're high it should be caught, even... -
ARCHIVED Possibly Glutened - How Long Till You See A Reaction?
SMDBill replied to SMDBill's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's strange. That brain fog is starting to show signs. Or my mind is playing tricks on me because I am fearing going through what I am just recovering from again. There's a small knot where that bump started and it does itch. Feels like a headache coming on and I have had no daily headaches since being gluten-free. Probably just paranoia and not real symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Possibly Glutened - How Long Till You See A Reaction?
SMDBill posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was CC almost 2 weeks ago and just the last couple days I have really started to feel great. We decided to order gluten-free pizza from Ledo's Pizza locally, which I have safely had before. However, it's NOT prepared in a gluten-free kitchen so I knew I was eating it at my own risk. Anyway, my stomach, within 30 minutes of eating, began loudly growling... -
ARCHIVED What Is A Good Probiotic?
SMDBill replied to AandGsmomma's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I researched and one thing that stood out was a lot of recommendation that it be in capsule form. That way it survives the stomach and breaks down in the intestine, where it's needed. Most articles seem to suggest the more variety of probiotics within the supplement the better, and the higher cell count the better. Mine is not one of the highest, but it's... -
ARCHIVED Exhausted And Venting
SMDBill replied to glutenfree015's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not sure if it's much of a valid indicator, but I began supplementing with iron, B-complex (very strong levels), D3 gel (5,000 IU), multivitamin, magnesium (250mg), omega 3/6/9 gel, calcium and probiotics. What I noticed early on was that my stool turned green. That's a positive sign that the iron was absorbed and excreted. When I was glutened I lost... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With The Anger Of Accidental Glutening?
SMDBill replied to AandGsmomma's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was angry when I got glutened, but I'm only "mostly sure" where it happened so I can't even point a finger and say "That was it!" It's tough because you're sick and may not even know the source (but you sure know the cause!). For the other part, I think of people who may be without sight or missing a limb and how they must feel when they see me moving... -
ARCHIVED Surprised This Morning With Celiac Diagnosis, Not Sure What To Do
SMDBill replied to rorenchan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The sinus symptoms are interesting. I posted this info elsewhere, but it's somewhat relevant. I suffered constant post nasal drip and I had a few sinus and throat infections along the way. I also was forced to constantly clear my throat - about once per minute while awake. It was embarrassing and irritating. Once gluten-free I think it was somewhere within... -
That may have been me, but I also noticed that my hands are softer. I wear a wedding band that has rubbed a callous on my palm from finger movement, but that callous is now completely flat. It's still a bit hard and the color is the same as a raised callous, but the actual bump is gone. I just noticed that one today! I've had this ring on for 22 years and...

ARCHIVED Exhausted And Venting
SMDBill replied to glutenfree015's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It sounds like there is still a deficiency of some kind, maybe in a vitamin/nutrient or a remaining absorption issue if the weight keeps coming off. Are you taking in more than you burn through normal activities in terms of calories/fat or is your metabolism on fire and burning it faster than you can bring it in? Have you tried adding any fats to your... -
ARCHIVED Requesting Advice
SMDBill replied to healthy-dreamer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow, your symptoms are very similar to mine, particulary the sinus problem. I did not even know it was related until I had gone gluten-free for a bit. I started to notice I no longer had severe post nasal drip, worst in the morning, followed by it constantly throughout the day which required throat clearing nearly every minute. When I realized I had stopped...
