  1. Hey Stephanie, here's your medal <pins medal on Stephanie> lol Yes, it's nice to have a forum where people understand! I'm a regular poster on a message board for mom's (all our kids are the same age, we've been together over 5 years), and I hate to whine there because one of my friend's DD is fighting leukemia and another who's DS has chronic...
  2. Hi, I found on the Kraft website that Kraft Free original mayo is gluten-free (thank God, I love potato salad!). Dextrose is sugar, plain and simple.
  3. I hear you!!! I am almost 36, and going been gluten-free for 2 weeks tomorrow! There is a HUGE part of me that wishes I had never been screened for this. I did it as the "responsible" thing to do, but at the time, never thought it would be positive. In my head, as an intelligent person/nurse/mother I know that in the long run, it's much better for me...
  4. Hey Mari! I'd love to chat more too! My e-mail is luv_my_2_girls@hotmail.com, and that is also my MSN messenger handle! How long since you were diagnosed?? For me it was Aug 25! I'm very new at this!
  5. I made "regular" gingersnaps last night for my daughter to take in her school lunches. I've always tried to have cookies around to throw in her lunch, so I asked her what she wanted and she said gingersnaps. This is probably lame, but I am so darn frickin' proud of myself for not having the teeniest tiniest morsel of dough or cookie! This was my first...
  6. I just thank God I am not allergic to chocolate. Now that would REALLY suck Wow, do I hear you on this one!!! As I said to my friends, I can still have chocolate and wine, life is still good! I'm pretty new at this, but I know what you mean already. Local amusement park today, left home in a rush, no time to pack a salad. Ended up eating...
  7. Woops. sorry, I slipped into nurse-speak, lol!! Subclinical means I have no clinical features of celiac disease, as in I can eat anything I want, never get cramps, never have diarrhea, I do occasionally feel bloated/gassy but so does pretty well everyone once in a while. I got screened because my sister was diagnosed last winter, never in a million years...
  8. You really need to talk to a doctor about your labs! I don't know details about your health issues, but I can tell you one thing. An elevated alk phos is caused when your body is leaching calcium from your bones, which happens when you either don't have enough calcium intake, or for some reason you are not absorbing the calcium you intake. Over the course...
  9. Hi Kevin, I'm new to all this as well. Just wanted to say welcome and I'm sure you'll find some good information and support here. It's been pretty overwhelming the last week for me, but I'm doing ok and finding there are lots of gluten-free products to try, and of course the naturally gluten-free food as well! So far I'm not starving!
  10. Well, I wouldn't say I was a gluten queen, pasta was always something I could take or leave. Dessert on the other hand is a hard one. I'm taking it one day at a time. I'm earnestly trying to be gluten-free, but there is no way, logistically or financially, I can restock my pantry, my kitchen and my bathroom in one day. I'm learning as much as I can...
  11. Hi Amanda, I'm new here too, I was diagnosed on Aug 25th. I'm pretty much useless for advice However, just wanted to say welcome. I think your DH is probably in shock! Even though I knew for about 5 months that I probably had celiac disease (time from initial bloodwork to get GI consult to get scope), I have still had some real moments of grief and...
  12. Hi there, I'm not an expert and I'm newly diagnosed myself. My sister was diagnosed, and based on her allergies to anesthesia, she did not have a scope. She and her GI agreed her symptoms, history, and the + blood test were sufficient. As a first degree relative, I got screened, never thinking it would come back + as I have none of the symptoms of celiac...

    ARCHIVED Grrrr....

Well, I guess I am lucky in many ways because I am a nurse, so all of my colleagues have at least heard of Celiac Disease! Unfortunately, the staff room is always full of food because we always seem to be celebrating something around there, or else the parents of our patients send food in for us. As well, we have tea at 5am on night shift, which usually...
  14. I met my best friend and her 2 kids at the Zoo yesterday with my 2 kids. I always buy lunch there, she always packs her own. Anyhow, after finding a fruit plate in the cafeteria (I was getting really excited about the fries, which are cooked in their own vat, but then I saw them dumping them into the same serving dish as the chicken fingers and serving...
  15. Thanks Shirley! I will have to look for that! I haven't been to the local Celiac Association yet, waiting to get kids back to school
  16. Hi there, I'm new at this too. Like a week, to be exact! So far I've done the gluten-free diet but not thrown away any beauty products. Some of my stuff doesn't even have an ingredient label on it, I have no idea what's in it! And I feely admit that since I've been asymptomatic for almost 36 years, I fully intend to finish off my current bottle of shampoo...
  17. What do you mean by "send in your card"??????? Thanks.
  18. I feel your pain. I was just Dx last week, I am 150% asymptomatic (family member has it, I got screened). Anyhow, now I'm paranoid my 4 year old has it. Frequent complaints of tummy aches and on/off diarrhea. I will be sick sick sick if I gave it to her. She goes for her annual check up in a week and I'll request testing then. Think I'll just get my...
  19. Well, I admit the tips on the good stuff have been helpful, and I had to laugh at a lot of the comments. Would it be really horrible, though, to admit that by about page 5 of this thread I was crying?? I really thought there might be something out there that actually tasted like baking. Guess it just hit me that I will never eat a cookie again, but cut...
  20. I have no symptoms and never had. I was only dx (conclusively) less than a week ago. My sister has celiac disease so I got screened, scoped and I have it too. I could eat anything and feel fine, but I am going to do my best to keep to the diet my body demands.
  21. Nope! Skoki is a reference to the Skoki Valley near Lake Louise My ex and I met skiing at LL, our girls both have namesakes from the area so I use Skoki even though I am more than happy to be rid of ex!!! My girls and I are getting our pictures taken at Lake Louise this fall, I can hardly wait! BTW, I think my 4 year old probably has celiac disease...
  22. Hi Karen, Nice to see another Canadian here. Maybe you can help me with Canadian restaraunt chains when I decide to venture beyond the salad or baked potato. I have no idea if I have eaten gluten or not, I swear I could drink battery acid and not feel anything. I've never shown a symptom of this disease in my life. My mother said she remembers this...
  23. Hi there, thanks for the welcome. I live in Calgary.
  24. Hi all, I'm new here. My name is Lori, I live in Canada, I'm 35 and I just got my diagnosis confirmed on Thursday via endoscope. I hope I can find some good discussions and support here. My older sister (2 years older) broke her hip in January, and to make a long story short, they found out she has bad osteoporosis and in efforts to figure out why, they...
