ARCHIVED Imagine If This Happened In The Us....
skoki-mom replied to celiac3270's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like a good idea to me. I think I read somewhere that all Italian children are diagnosed as well. I could see it happening in Canada if there was more awareness. It could save a lot of people a lot of suffering............ -
Hi Nicolette, Nice to meet you I'm glad the diagnosis is the answer you're looking for and I really do hope you will begin to feel better soon. You are right, changing your diet is not the end of the world. I try very hard to be optimistic about things and remind myself I could have a disease that is much worse. After all, how many diseases can be...

ARCHIVED Damaged Villi
skoki-mom replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think so, that is why the antibody blood tests are so accurate. The antibodies are present because of villi damage, and I asked my GI if it could be anything else besides celiac disease and he said no. -
ARCHIVED I'm Addicted!
skoki-mom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am totally hooked on Kinnikinnik Double Chocolate Almond cookies. I am on my second bag in a week <blush>. I never would have tried them if I didn't have celiac disease, but darn they are good! I'm a cookieholic, having lots of grief over it, but these little gems are making my life much easier! I also like the Almond cookies and the Montana Chocolate... -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Worried?
skoki-mom replied to kelley's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like you are quite in tune with your body. Some dr's get defensive about "self-diagnosis", but you never know until you ask. Does anyone in your family have celiac disease? I would request the test, because for someone who is really sick, I can see how finding out what is wrong would be a Godsend! -
ARCHIVED Girl Guide Cookies
skoki-mom replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mmmmmmmmmm, love Girl Guide cookies! I used to buy tons of them. My kids will still sell them, but dunno how many of us will be eating this year. Bummer. Oh well, at least they are an easy sell. -
ARCHIVED I'm The Only One :(
skoki-mom replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Because they don't want to know, they don't want to go on the diet. I have often thought I wish I didn't get tested because I'm not *sick*, as in I don't have symptoms, but I do know it is better in the long run for me to know. But, that is why they won't get tested, they are scared it will come back positive. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Cried Over This?

I'd be interested in hearing what you have done for turkey stuffing. Thanksgiving here is in a couple of weeks and I am hosting it at my house. My family (me included) doesn't like actual meat in our stuffing, though I have made broth out of giblets many times. I haven't had a lot of time to research it, but I was hoping to find some sort of rice thing... -

ARCHIVED I'm The Only One :(
skoki-mom replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I got tested because my sister was diagnosed last winter. Like your parents, I don't have any symptoms, never have, maybe I never would have become symptomatic, who knows. Our parents have also tested negative, but they both have bowel "issues". In fact, I am the only member of the family that is normal in that department, go figure!!! What I have learned... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Cried Over This?
skoki-mom replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, tonight, it's gingersnaps, my mom's recipe I've been eating for 35 years. I have some for the kids. They are awesome. I tried the Kinnikinnik ones, they are ok, certainly palatable enough, but they are just not the same, kwim?? I have been working the last 4 days (12 h a day), so the pantry is low at is always is when I have been at work, and I... -
I feel like the world's biggest loser because every few days I end up crying because there is just something I want so bad and can't have. Then I tell myself to suck it up, it's only food, it could be worse. I know all the reasons I can't/shouldn't, I haven't cheated, I just miss some things sooooo much, and I get so frustrated when I can't find a good substitute...

ARCHIVED I Know I Am Being Waaaaay Oversensitive Here
skoki-mom replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your replies have been all been very interesting and honest! I'm glad to see I am not the only one bugged by it, but also realize I shouldn't be thin-skinned about it. I found a thread about "do you consider yourself sick", which I had to answer with a resounding "no"! I am not in denial that I have celiac disease, the bloodwork and endoscopy don't lie... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed 9-9-05. I Have Some Questions...
skoki-mom replied to AN616's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry, I really don't know. But, can I just ask why you didn't have blood testing?? It is much more accurate and diagnostice of celiac disease if it is positive. Sorry you aren't feeling better yet. Hang in there. I've been gluten-free just over 3 weeks, and I just finished rummaging in my pantry and came up with one lousy chocolate for lunch because... -
ARCHIVED Run Down Immune System
skoki-mom replied to Rachel--24's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not the expert, but sulphites are in lots of things, and there is no law in Canada, anyway, they they must be listed in product labels. Bottled water has sulphites in it. ALL grapes have sulphites on them, it preserves them because grapes go off so quickly after harvest, so my sis doesn't eat any grapes, raisins, grape juice or any kind of wine. Anytime... -
ARCHIVED Run Down Immune System
skoki-mom replied to Rachel--24's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry you have been feeling so crummy. My sister (who also had celiac disease), was dx with allergies to msg and sulphites long before her celiac disease diagnosis. She was always feeling unwell, misses tons of work, tired, stuff like that. Maybe you could try avoiding some of those chemicals as well??? It's hard, her diet is extremely limited, but you... -
Have you tried those wrist bands yet I was telling you about??? Like you, I had tons of nausea but very little throwing up. The wrist bands too the edge off enough that I could function in my day-to-day life and even work. I wore them for weeks with each pregnancy. I am concerned about self-medicating during pregnanacy. I know ginger-tea is ok, but a...

ARCHIVED Feeling Frustrsted
skoki-mom replied to iszler's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ugh, I hate it that he laughed at you! How disrespectful! FWIW, I'm 5'6", 150 lb, no bloated stomach, no diarrhea, no weight loss (I wish!), no cramps, no gas, zero nada zip!!! And I do have celiac disease! Not everyone is the same, your dr should know that. My family dr was actually really great, I asked to be screened cuz my sis has celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn
skoki-mom replied to swittenauer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take Orville's micro popcorn to work on night shift. I eat a LOT of popcorn, even before my celiac disease dx, so was I ever glad my favourite snack was safe! I only make hot air popped at home, and put real butter on it, mmmmmmmmm. I have zero guilt about it because I just think of all the stuff I can't have!! I can't watch Survivor or a hockey game... -

ARCHIVED Help Me! -- 13 Yr. Old Just Diagnosed
skoki-mom replied to celiac3270's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Actually, I find it nice to see some of these threads and see that we *all* had to start out somewhere, gives me hope! I have sure learned a lot in less than a month! celiac3270, your posts always sound so mature for your age, you are a very impressive guy! -
First of all, congratulations!!! I had horrible nausea with both my pregnancies. Even though I was eating gluten then, the saltine cracker thing did nothing for me. In fact, nothing much really helped, I'm sorry to say. Totally not food related, but I did find that the Sea-Bands wrist bands (they work on accupressure) helped take the edge off. I hope...
